My grandad was a freedom fighter in the Yugoslavian resistance in the war and a liaison with SOE only because he somewhat knew english. For that reason or another he was a true Anglophile with deep love for anything British. Now he's gone and my passion for english culture and tradition is a part of his legacy. I am happy to have found History chap, well done sir! Your content is simply amazing.

Great presentation! You know, with every video you present, I learn something new. And YES, I would love to hear more about pre-Roman Britain. This is a subject that is under-covered on TH-cam, and certainly has not had the kind of exciting delivery that you specialise in.

    Yes.
But also, as a fellow admirer of Rome who’s heard this story and read this story a thousand times.
I have to give you this compliment, you have honestly given me such a different look on invasions into Britain you have absolutely blown my mind. Thank you.

Great video chris. Years ago I used to go to devils Dyke outside wheahampstead. This was the sight where caesar defeated cassievalaunus in 54 BC
Magnus Magnussonn did a documentary interviewing the late Sir Mortimer Wheeler. The great archaeologist who did some excavations there in the 1930's.

Thanks! Another excellent and informative video. I read about Caesar's exploits in Britain but not in as much detail. Yes, I would like to learn about Britain at the time of Caesar as you indicated. The movies, TV and books give a different picture than what you described.

I thought Caesar landed at Pegwell Bay near Ramsgate. No cliffs there…and he lost his ships through being unaware of the effects of tides as there isn’t much tidal effect in the Mediterranean…
… but then again my school history classes were so long ago my teacher could have been an eye witness!

During my deployment I read 'The Belgic Wars' as part of my "hurry up and wait" training. I though it's main function was an ego polishing exercise with tenuous ties to reality. The underlying evidence strongly suggests (to my mind) the Briton's mobile warfare tactics knocked the stuffing out of the Roman forces. Six footers were common among the Celtic forces and rare among the Roman forces, they were fighting giants.
Also read "Catch 22" (3 times) far better reading 😉

Hi Chris loved your video on Julius caesar when you going to do another one about the romans invading Britain. Also Chris i wonder if you could do a story about a VC winner from ww2 L/sgt basketfield of the south Staffordshire regiment. He got in Arnhem knocking out 3 to 4 german tanks with a anti tank gun after all the gun crew was killed. There is a monument of him at the site called festivial park near Hanley.

I came across your channel with your Dad's Army stuff. I've always had this background interest in all eras of history, the Roman period is particularly fascinating. Even though I've watched some good material on TV and TH-cam about the Romans I really love how you present things, Although we still have names and dates you have a real talent for the really personal stories. Many things can be factual and interesting, but I feel you show such respect for those individuals.

Hi,Chris,I enjoyed that and,as usual, you mentioned some things that I did not know in a great video, now, how about a video of King Caractacus, who held out againt the Roman invasion of Claudius for some nine years and even when he was handed over to the Romans by Queen Cartimandua,he made such an impresive speach to the Roman Senate, that, instead of being killed after a triumph,as the Romans normally did,he was allowed to live in Rome as a free man.
OK,I know a bit about him from my history leasons in school but given that that was well over 50 plus years ago,I am sure that you will come up with new facts,it's a great story and your Welsh fans,as well as everybody else will simply love it.
    keep the great stories coming.

Wheathampstead seems to have been the main, earliest settlement of the catuvellauni, although verulam has evidence of some occupation which seems to have started around a decade or so later.
The Belgic pottery found at wheathampstead predates anything found at verulam.
Sadly due to the lack of excavation work, compared to verulam we know very little about wheathampstead and almost everything about verulam.
We know verulam became the cheiftans seat of power from 20 bc , excavations discovered a 'royal palace ' in the centre of the oppidum, a large building surrounded by ditches and a gate house.
Several gate houses are also known for the main settlement.
Wheras at wheathampstead we have no idea where any entrance to the city is.
When i first started working for the museum archaeology team, inbetween rescue digs ( removing archaeology before developers can build)
I was involved in a lot of digs ,to discover, to identify to date , purely for archaeological reasons.
But the past 20 years have all been rescue digs,
The museum stopped funding archaeology, its council owned and they don't have enough money .. :/

Hi Chris, well you've hit a rich vein of "yes" votes with this one, well done!!
Just finishing off a book on the evolution of the calendar a story stretching back to Caesars time, it was his calendar, and for some it still is.
Thoroughly enjoy all types of history, most of which is a real education for me. I keep being amazed at the hillforts, hillfigures and stone circles that I see on a number of other TH-cam channels.
One thing really surprised me was the estimated population size of 2 million back then. I had the feeling that the population was far more sparse.
Anyway, you get a big "SI" from me too!! Good luck from Spain!!

    • @TheHistoryChap
      @TheHistoryChap  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

There are some historians and archaeologists that argue that it was a lot higher than that, possibly around 4 million

Oh YES, PLEASE do THIS era in your videos for a bit, Chris old chap, certainly with today's posting you've given me a history lesson I've been TWO DECADES overdue for ever since I was in primary school, cos WAY back then me and my class did the Roman era in lessons for a time, and of course I've known so full well just WHO Julius Caesar was/is, but as to the historical facts about Caesar's two attempted and failed invasions of Britain, then of course Britannia, I knew NOTHING, hardly ANYTHING diddly squat, about them until today, so THANK YOU for today's video, dear chap, I CERTANLY needed it after all these easily going on 20 years.
And again, YES PLEASE, in accordance with others who've already commented, do this era of us Brits' history for a bit, it'd certainly be a much welcome change. And please do one about Emperor Claudius's invasion, and this time of course MUCH more successful than that of Caesar's two attempts, of Britain perhaps, cos it was HE, Claudius, the one who succeeded the mad tyrant Caligula and would become a very popular Emperor for Rome, who gave the Roman Empire Britain after all, so I'd certainly welcome a video about THAT, YES, aye

2.51+ The Great Torc from Snettisham, Norfolk, probably about 75 B.C.
Why did Julius Caesar invade Britain ? For the same reason as he invaded Gaul .... because of political ambition in Rome and because he was a vicious bullying thug and megalomaniac who couldn't leave other people alone. He was a war criminal of the first order responsible for mass murder, rape and torture, especially in Gaul. He was every bit as bad as Alexander the psychopathic megalomaniac of just a few centuries earlier. He may have had some more progressive ideas in Rome than the corrupt scum whom he opposed but I shed no tears for his end. He lived by the sword and was cut down by the dagger and the knife .... poetic justice

Now watching the video but couldnt help point out that the statue in the thumbnail and start of video is of augustus caesar (octavian) not julius caesar
Its an easy mistake to make octavian modelled himself heavily on julius, im not criticising just correcting

Ceasar certainly did have enemies in the senate, but crassus and pompey were still (at the time Ceasar launched his first invasion of Britannia) staunch allies, not rivals. The three of them formed something informally known as the Triumvirate, which was a mutually beneficial arrangement between Pompey (the most famous general) Crassus (the richest man in Rome) and Ceasar (the rising star and magnetic politician). In fact pompey was actually married to Ceasars daughter and was expecting a child when Ceasar set off for the invasion. Ceasar attempted to invade Brittain from his own standing and reputation, and not because he was afraid of pompey and crassus specifically, in fact they were still holding back the wrath of the senators who hated Ceasar. This would begin to change after Ceasar returned and discovered that his daughter /pompey's wife had died in child birth, and this lack of direct tie between them would allow pompey to be swayed into the orbit of the anti Ceasar senators.
Most of the things you state are accurate, though a bit off on the timeline. Crassus never really went against Ceasar either, but this was because he died fighting the parthians. The chronology is VERY important for understanding this period of Roman history because a lot of things will develop within months of each other.

Hi Chris you're fishing in a new pond now and I like it. This time was the special field of my late mother (her great aunt meets Churchill while studying surgery after Dresden in England, you asked...) and I know some about this time...And her mother was in mail contact with Rupert Ranke Graves ,the author of Claudius Emperor and God. Ranke is like you know that German historian family. Claudius invaded Britannia for political intentions, to be better than Caesar. I believe the elephants as in Claudius showed were never there. And my mother met Caroline Gedge ,author of Raven and Eagle on a meeting for linguistics in New Zealand in the 90ies .Maybe you're interested. 😂! The fact is, Britannia never earned her keep really under the Roman's but it's always politically based. Thank you and bring Claudius to the mass of us! God's Blessings from Northern Germany Ludwig.

Caesar's landing sounds like Omar Bradley on Omaha. I remember translating this in Latin class (yeah, I go back that far). And, yes, insight into the tribes would be welcome.

Britannia reminds me of Israel in ancient times. Just as Britannia was divided into tribes, Israel was split into 12 tribes. Also, I can compare Caesar's invasion of Britannia to the Anglo-Zulu War where the first invasion in both cases ended in defeat and the second time there were successes. The difference was the Romans didn't conquer the island while the British ended the independence of the Zulu nation. What is your website?

Just a small very picky comment, The Romans didn't lock shields as mentioned at 12:05 at this time in thier history. They had to maintain gaps for stabbing the enemy rather than presenting a phalanx style formation.

Having read Caesar's "Conquest of Gaul" I'm not sure that the Romans regarded Britain as much more than a province of Gaul, and his first invasion was possibly just a punitive raid - some kind of warning to the Britons about giving shelter to their fugitive Gallic cousins.
There also seemed to be very little agreement about the Romans among British tribes, some of whom welcomed the Romans because (a) they brought trade and wealth, and (b) with the Romans on their side, their enemies would think twice before attacking them.
