  • The haadtien is a unique boutique resort nestled amongst the palm groves in the southern tip of Koh Tao with its own approximately 350 meter secluded beach. The development has taken place organically with variety of private villas and rooms, both beachfronts and seaviews, set amongst 45 acres of land that encompass the resort. The villas have been designed to provide guests with clean, comfortable and spacious accommodation without sacrificing the natural environment which makes the resort so unique.
The resort is totally private as it is situated in its own natural bay, with granite cliffs on both sides and jungle behind, yet the resort is only a kilometre from the nearest village with local shops and restaurants. The beach itself opens out onto a crystal blue shallow lagoon which is perfect for swimming and snorkelling, and at night all that can be heard is the lapping of the waves and the whistling of the breeze.
In keeping with environmental influences that make the resort so special, the name "haad tien" derives from the trees to be found growing at the water's edge, with their gnarly roots digging into the white coral sands of the beach.
    haadtien and the environment
The haadtien is built on one of the most untouched and naturally beautiful bays in Thailand, therefore the resort has been designed with the environment in mind. The villas and restaurant building are low impact and built of natural materials. The resort has its own flower and plant nursery, to ensure we have a constant supply of naturally occurring foliage. The nursery also doubles as a fruit and vegetable garden, again to ensure guests have fresh and delicious produce while maintaining a low carbon footprint.
Water, a precious commodity on the island is drawn from our own boreholes sunk deep into the subsoil. Any waste water is recycled and used to irrigate the garden and plantings in the resort. Lastly, any refuse generated in the resort is sorted and recycled, and the beach is thoroughly cleaned and swept every day with any driftwood removed for use as resort fuel.

Haad Thian, the first time I lived there was in 1988. there was one comfortable thai wooden house with a large verandah in the very corner of the beach (they tared it down). DAM, a burmese fisherman, one of the first burmese on Koh Tao became my friend. he was the housekeeper. and to escape the lonely! nights he let me live in the second hut (i payed the beers an whiskey - fair enough :) - ). he took care for the owner. some rich man in bangkok, obviously with style, who came down twice a year with some friends to empty some bottles, and gave a sh*t on capitalizing on this beautiful bay. he refused to cash in. no bungolows, just palm trees, 20 chicken with 50kids, they were really! free running chicken, we fed them with coconuts, that fell off the trees. 4 dogs loved it to chase the chicken around, and when Dam collected us some eggs for breakfast the henns were jumping on his head and picking at him. the beach was absolutely empty - there was NOBODY, except my french girlfriend and me. at nights the see was glooming from phosphorizing plancton. you could make love on the beach... the was nobody, PARADISE - i returned almost every year, that means more than 20 times, i gave up counting. . I considerKoh Tao as "my island" :) Dam is long dead. on one of my last returns, they had closed the entry from chalok baan kao, and you had to make an enourmous detour to enter the bay. and than i realized the typical thai housetemple for the dead, a very respectful, nice one.. the old owner was obiously gone, so they started to construct a resort. but i have to admit it's pretty lovely made. it's one of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful resort on Koh Tao. There's still "Rocky Resort" at the end of the beach. dunno if, or how long they will survive. the only object, that somehow scares me, is a concrete construction at the entry on the east side (you can see in the distance on the video), and maybe some of the guests, who have absolutely NO CLUE that they are in Thailand. Koh Tao is overcrowded, the island is pretty small.... on my first arrivial on Mae Haad, in 1988 , i recall there was a sign: population 750 policeman "none" with the "n" crossed out.. there were already two! pickups and maybe 5 motorbikes on the island. - no walls or fences, just one dirt road, and everybody was greeting everybody when you met in the jungle. we had to carry all the beers and rice and stuff by walking at nights thru the junge on footpaths . only the moon and the stars giving a light, and we went fishing out at shark rock. DAM sold some fish to "Mama Rocky", to make a little baht . that were the days when even backpackers still got fresh fish in their bungalow... a paradise lost, but nicely refurbished :) - written down for my best friend DAM, who is long time gone and whom i'm still missing! -..... fooling around with a camera on the patio dec.1991 th-cam.com/video/-Kv8VAtfTYQ/w-d-xo.html

That's crazy I knew dum hahaha .. He used to take me fishing and cooked us dinner. Everytime we went there we stayed in that house during my vacation with my dad because the owner of that house was my dad friend. Too bad he passed away while I was studying abroad ... Sure missed him what a great guy he was. This brings back so much good O memories.
