I know there are many Buffy/Giles shippers who think it hinted at being romantic...and there was at least one scene that had to be refilmed because it looked that way...although in fairness, SMG could play against a piece of coal and have chemistry with it...where was I? Oh yeah, to me, it was always a father/daughter connection...or it was until S7 and Joss the jerk ruined everything. Love the video.

A father, no matter how wonderful he is, does not always make the right decisions, does not always approve of his daughter's choices, etc. This is exactly what happened in S7. There was always a strained relationship between him and Spike. And in the end, it all led to what we saw.
In addition, Buffy herself makes somewhat inadequate decisions. I understand why she decides to put Spike in Angel's place, to settle him with her metaphorical heart -- Xander. Something Blue did not happen just like that, there were always some rudiments of feelings between them. And in the end, Giles tries to act exactly like a father -- a father whose help has been consistently rejected since season 4.

How did Joss ruin it in season 7? Giles and Buffy drifted apart back in season 6 when he abandoned her when she needed him the most (probably because Anthony wanted some time away?). They had several disagreements in season 7 which were hard to stomach, true, but they patched things up by the end. Also, I don't think there are really that many shippers, on the contrary, it's universally recognized in the fandom that Giles is a father figure for her.

@@ThePowerDrome How was his help rejected? In season 5 she explicitly asked him to stay, sough his assistance on learning more about Slayers' origins, begged him not to leave her in season 6... His help was appreciated, it's just that she grew up and became more of a leader with time. Afterall, Slayer is the lonely job.

@@yevgeniyaleshchenko849 I'm saying that his departure makes sense. After all, one of the father's jobs is to prepare his child for an independent life. I'm not saying it was the best decision in Tabula Rasa, but Buffy herself rejected him earlier, not telling him the truth about where she was, and literally putting him on the same level as everyone else in SG. From his perspective, the hardest times will prepare her for an independent life and making independent decisions as soon as possible. The logic has its flaws, but it's there.

@@yevgeniyaleshchenko849 Making up storylines for no other reason than to cause conflict for the sake of things. It doesn't matter whether they reconciled at the end or not; it still didn't need to be done-a perfect example being Giles suddenly trusting Robin, whom he had known for five minutes rather than the person he had known for a year, or Empty Places, where they all ganged up on her, including Xander, who was just singing her praises a few episodes before. Many fans over the years have called both him and the writers out on it. You only need to look under comment sections where those episodes are reviewed to see that it is a common complaint regarding S7.

Giles did just what her bio father did. He left her for a new family. The potentials were his midlife crisis trophy wife. He used the divorce lawyers of Lehane and Wood to take the house and dogs (scoobies). Spike was the ‘Ripper’ replacement who was stronger, forever young, an animal in the sack, could protect Buffy better than him, and had plenty of arcane knowledge. Why was depending on Spike a bad thing after he was souled? Why did he have Wood, Xander and Dawn in the basement when he triggered Spike if not to put them in danger to make a point. Spike was never going to get in touch with himself in a room full of enemies. Spike DID cure himself in spite of this. Giles was the perfect father figure until the midlife crisis, then he had his new children and Buffy was relegated to the past.
