- In this video we look at the terms used to describe igneous rocks and how these terms relate to the formation of different igneous rock types. This video uses a flow chart to classify igneous rocks. In this video we will look at ultramafic, mafic, intermediate, felsic, fragmented, glassy and vesicular igneous rocks.

Basalt is a mafic Igneous rock with 45 to 52% silica content ....but the IUGS classification (pic attached) define basalt as a rock that contains a max of 20% quartz .....why this difference is there
