Apple employee here, my personal recommendation I make to the grand majority of my customers when buying a phone is 128gb with an iCloud subscription. No lie, the money you’d spend upgrading from 128gb to 256gb can literally get you almost 8 and a half years of a 50gb iCloud subscription.
It’s cheaper to do it this way and it’s safer! I’m personally not a fan of having all my photos on device in case I lose my phone or if it breaks or gets stolen.
On my personal phone I have 256gb and I have almost 300 apps, pretty every app I could ever need ever (and loads I could delete), and I am still below 128gb of used storage by around 4gb. I personally went for 256gb for the improved video formats afforded to 256gb 13 Pro’s and above, so there are cases where 256gb or more is applicable- it’s just about asking yourself what kind of user you are!
100% agree! As mentioned at the end of my video, I highly recommend getting iCloud as it works out cheaper over 5 years of ownership to have say a 128GB or 25GB iPhone and then get the 2TB storage instead of a 1TB or 512GB iPhone. I love how iCloud manages the storage on your phone too that it frees up space and most items are in the iCloud and easy to get hold of when needed.
I don't trust iCloud whatsoever. I've known many people who have been hacked. I don't want to have my stuff on the cloud.
@@MattTalkTech However, the iCloud isn't a very seamless experience IMHO. I did a similar calculation and bought 200GB iCloud storage and a 64GbB iPhone, yet I faced "low memory issues".
Cloud is NOT secure so it is not safer than keeping data on phone itself.
i just got an iphone 15 pro max 512gb after having the iphone 12 pro max 256gb for 40 months. But it’s mostly because I use a dac with good quality headphones so i download my music highest resolution on tidal for my favorite music. otherwise i just download just at highest quality on Spotify.
If I had a choice, I'd love to get a 13inch MBA M2 in silver. My old laptop was a 2013 15inch Macbook Pro and it recently got broken. That is good information! I definitely take a ton of pictures on my phone. I don’t take pictures and video every day but when I go to work, I always take pictures of my sales report and keep a Excel sheet with that information. I also take train videos from my older brother, who loves trains. Anytime I go to a sporting event I always take pictures and videos from the game. When I started saving for a new phone, I was definitely planning on the 1 TB option for the iPhone Pro. The decision I am trying to figure out is where the rest of purchased the regular pro model or the pro max model.
Do remember you have iCloud too! It cheaper to pay for iCloud over 3 years than owing a 256GB model to the price difference of a 512Gb model not alone 512GB to 1TB. It also means all those memories are backed up

I took 1TB ..2 yrs ago..but now almost full..I took lots of videos than pictures..I’m using to movie making..!..so it depends on how you using your storage..for me I want the maximum storage ..2tb ..I’m not sure if buying storage on iCloud and pay monthly fees..or just go for the maximum storage..?.what’s your suggestion Matt.. thanks 🙏🏽

I always used to buy stock version and it was never enough, 8 gig on 3gs wasn’t enough after 4 years, 64 gigs on 8 plus wasn’t enough after 3 years so this year i’ll get 15 pro max with 500 gigs
I'm using 140GB out of 256GB on my iPhone X, I've never removed any photos/videos in 6 years since I bought it. I've just ordered a 15 Pro max 512GB to compensate for better camera and I want it to last other 6 years at least without bothering emptying it from time to time...

The HEIF coding for photos will help with storage. I went with 512GB this time but I doubt I will ever fill it. My 256GB is only slightly over half full so I should be good for a long time but I do plan to use it for more of my photos than I have in the past.

I just preordered the 512 GB blue titanium 15 Pro Max and upgrading from the 12 Pro Max. After this, I don’t plan to upgrade until Apple releases a phone with an under display camera and under display FaceID.
@@michaelhall9146 definitely would be a good time to upgrade when that comes out for sure. I feel like smartphones in general have reached a point where they’re so advanced now. Each year will feel more and more incremental but the longer you hold onto your phone the greater the upgrade will be and feel 😊

I am on the borderline of 256GB of my iPhone 13 Pro Max. I have ordrered 512GB fir 15 Pro Max. I don't prefer to use iCloud Photo and only store locally on Mac. I think the photo size of the iPhone 15 Pro will be bigger for each phone as it stores the Portrait copy as well.

Great vid Matt, actually looking at upgrading my phone myself because I'm running out of storage and it's becoming difficult to get anything done.
One thing I will say about iCloud photos is once they're on iCloud I find it super difficult for them to be opened on my iPhone smoothly. For example if I'm looking back through my photos trying to find an old clip or something to edit into a video. I have to sit there and wait for the video or image to download which just ruins the whole creative process.
This is just my experience and I could be getting something wrong. I'm hoping that an upgrade to a bigger storage device will help this. After all, I am on an iPhone 12 that's 64 GB so I feel this may be the issue when trying to download stuff 😂

However do note that alot of users are THANKFULLY paying for a storage solution in the cloud. so what is more likely is "how many photos and videos will you be taking before going back home on a charger and syncing with your storage solution"

Hi Matt. Thanks for this helpful video. I’m still confused about how iCloud works. My phone is set to auto backup to iCloud. Does each backup overwrite the previous one? Otherwise I imagine the iCloud capacity would be maxed out in no time with the constant piling on of the backups

I use under 30gb on my iphone. That is with icloud disabled.
I rearly take any photos, and often delete photos i no longer need.
I also only keep the essentiel apps, and delete them as soon as i no longer need them
I switched from SE1 to SE3, from 32GB to 64GB. I had problems with 32GB and thought 64GB would be plenty. After 1year I have the same issues again and ordered cloud storage. But it’s not for me. The IPhone constantly switches back and forth apps and fotos. So they are not ready when you want to use them and gifs turn to photos somehow. I can’t download more music because I use amazon music. I could but when the new iOS update comes it needs at least 5GB free storage so I have to delete certain songs manually. With the next IPhone I will go with 512gb or even 1TB (yes a bit exaggerating but I want to use the new one at least 4years). The cloud storage is simply not usable for me. It should be considered as workspace for people who shoot long videos in 4K or smth and want to work on them with another device but for everyday use to save a couple of bucks it’s not meant to be in my opinion. You can always wait and buy a refurbished phone with the amount you need plus some extra extra space.

If you're trying to get the pro max and use it at least 3 years or more I think 512gb is the right choice since all the apps and os are getting bigger and bigger after updating, if you chang e your phone yearly then 256gb is pretty enough.

You could sum up this video by one simple phrase: "The newer iPhones with the USB-C ports are capable of using thumb drives to write and read from." Personally I will be going for the cheapest model from now on and just use a tiny usb drive. I have a 256gb one that's the size of my thumb nail, so naturally that's smarter for me I think. Sure, that leaves the stick exposed if you lose it.

I would consider myself a normal user with a bit of mobile gaming content creation in between, my 2 games are Genshin impact (25GB) and Pubg Mobile (20GB), my content videos are usually 1080p at 60fps and are usually around 1 minute- 10 minutes long and then I delete them afterwards, I also do take personal photos and videos IRL and have social media apps, my current XR is 64GB😂 which I’ve been struggling with, which storage option of the 15 pro max should I go with?

Upgrading from 64mb 8 plus to a 14 plus. 128 mb cost about $100 less than a 512 mb. I plan to continue using icloud to ensure that I don't lose my photos in case my phone gets lost or stolen. I don't think I'll actually need the extra storage. I never download music. Is it a waste of money to pay up for the 512 mb? Will it retain more value? Please help me decide. I'm so indecisive and hate wasting money but I want to have a comfortable amount of storage since I hope not to replace the phone for many years.

Just get the regular pro then. It comes in 128gb.
The worst thing about iOS is that it allows apps to build a HUGE cache and does not give you the option to manually clean it. my IG app has a cache of almost 20GB and even if I delete the app, it only takes about a month or so for the cache to be back again at 20GB. Similar issue with Facebook, email, outlook and just any of my most used apps.
Reset and restore is a long-winded godsend tbh

Pre-order the iPhone 15 Pro Max (512GB) in Natural Titanium. I don't care about the camera since I rarely use to takes photos/record. I mostly use my phone for mobile gaming which takes majority of the space in my 128GB phone or download episodes/movies and music from streaming services for offline usage. Got 512GB because I plan to use this at 4+ years.

I'm choosing the 128GB for sure because my family has been passing down an iPhone 7 plus for around 3-5 years now and it's been handed down to me for a year now. I have over 100 games installed, 3k photos and idk some other stuff probably and it's only taken up around 70GB and i don't have any more need for things, so it's the best choice for me, but I understand the other options as well so great video!

I am considering 15 pro max and it is an upgrade from iphone 8 with only 64 gb. On my 8, the storage is full as it has been 6 years and I found myself deleting stuff to free up space. This is not a great measure of what capacity iPhone you’ll need. Most storage space is taken up by not only photos/videos but also messages (including attachments), apps, and even music and movies. Be aware that it’s more complicated then just how many photos do you take each week.

I recently got the 256GB 14 Pro Max in purple. Still my iCloud library somehow takes up terrabytes despite having always only had a max of 128GB's on my iPhones. 256GB's to me for the Pro models is entry level. If I went with the 15 I'd go with a regular Pro in 512GB's and use it as an external SSD.

I’ve got my iPhone 8 Plus 64gb with about 40 apps, 29,000 pictures and 1,100 videos, with plenty of room to spare. Remember most of them, once saved on your iCloud, don’t take much room.

I have 128 on my 13 pro max and definitely made the wrong choice. I take a lot of pictures and video and have a lot of apps on my phone so I think I will go with the 512gb. I probably won’t even fill up 256gb but I don’t want to deal with it if I were to get close

Im at 99 percent in 512 on my droid, so the 1T was a no brainer.
I think at least 512 GB. 256 is cutting it close. As for iCloud, don't trust a corporation on any private photos that you don't anyone to see. Use like a 2TB SanDisk ssd that plugs to phones usb. Or get your own cloud server. This saves money in the long run rather than giving more money to Apple.

Remember, you can store your videos on an external storage real time. This mean you don’t need a huge storage on your iPhone. A first for iPhone.

128 gb is fine. 256gb is great. 512gb is overkill. I have a iphone 7 plus 256gb. And a xiamoi mi 10t pro 256gb. Ive used up only 40 gb on the iphone. But on the xioami ive used 140 gb. But i think 128gb for a iphone is more than enough.

I can essentially run my entire phone off an SSD, what would be the point of upgrading storage ??
