Its recommended you do this once a year depending on how much you run your Motor. If you run through a lot of dirt and mud and really push your RC hard on a day to day basis, then rebuild it any where from 6-8 months.
Just had to comment a word of thanks here for being very thorough! I’m attempting to rebuild one of the old can-old rotor Velineon motors...and they have changed the rebuild kit since your video...it no longer includes all the different bushing set ups that you need for the old can style. You video and the thorough shot of the instruction sheet was enormously helpful for me!! It is the only place I’ve seen the info I’ve needed to rebuild this motor. Thanks bud...keep up the good work.
Thank you very much from Saudi Arabia. Great video, clear recording! My Rustler VXL is 4 months old. I will surely need this video one day. Best wishes.
I had my slash for 7 months and I just had a bearing completely blow on me it's a horrible mess it damaged the spur gear and I need to rebuild the motor. There's those lil bearing beads everywhere in the motor and gear housing. I had a spur gear that I put on and I ordered a rebuild kit so when that comes I'll be going again. Great video Stay Awesome!
I used a hack saw and cut a groove in it then I used a flat head screwdriver to unscrew it. Or you can use a torx wrench that is slightly bigger then a 2 mm allen wrench.
Nope. You don't have to use any grease on the inside. Just make sure it's clean and you're good. Always a good idea to use locktite on screws that hold metal to metal.
Great up-to-date rebuild vid, thanks i'm rebuilding my velineon now can't believe how much dirt/grease was in side! what about the locktite for the 4 screws around the motor.. should you grease the rotor with marine grease? or any or lubricant? rsvp
over a year my motor has slowed quite a bit (compared to my brother who just got a new motor thats way faster). does this mean i need a rebuild? or a cleaning? or is my motor damaged? plz help thanks
Hi, two things. I am cleaing my motor right now. Mine has rubber sealed bearings?? Also, can I use break cleaner for the cleaning and can I spray crc on the motor at the end?
When do you know if you should rebuild or need to change the bearings in the Velineon..? This would help alot of my RC community Thanks.. does the motor begin to make more noise, have more play in the motor arm or..??
If you cant use plyers to unscrew it you can use a drill or cut a slot in it with a drimel or hach saw and then use a phillips screwdriver to take it out.
Im in the process of rebuilding and your video was great. I wish my bearing came out as easy as yours did. It actually broke so only the outer ring of the bearing is still stuck at the bottom so im going to try and figure out a way to get that out now. Thanks for your time though. Let me know if you have any ideas cause there is no guaranty that I'm going to finish tonight...
Great instructional video. I recently experiences some concern with my Velineon motor in my Traxxas Ultimate. I have had the truck about 6 months. It has seen mud, snow, slush, water (bashing conditions). Just the other day I noted the motor as locked. I advanced the spur gear and it broke loose. I have applied power the motor since and it seems fine. I guessing that you would suggest it be rebuild. Thanks
Thanks for the vid. Do you know if the magnet the part of it you have your thumb on @ 6:35 is supposed to spin, while the two ends stay in place? Mine is acting like the magnet came loose, but not sure how it looks when working properly. Thank You
If you have he replacement bearings then knock them out with the method I show. The bearings won't always come out so easily and sometimes it takes a few hard wacks with a hammer before they begin to move.
thankyou for the video! very easy1!!!! but! i have a big problem now.... the washers i wasnt supposed to throw away, well there was only one between the bushing and the rotar- it was a jumper!!! I CANT FIND IT ANYWHERE!!!!!!!!! if i run without that will i be begging for trouble?????????? PLEASE let me know. im half way through a tear down
Preventative measures aside, what indications would you get that a motor could use or need a rebuild? I bought a used slash pretty cheap for my son(its my first experience with a brushless motor). Pinion and spur were horribly noise and I just couldn't seem to get it adjusted right. I decided to remove the motor to inspect and realized it's not turning freely. It feels like a stepper motor in hand. I measure the voltage across the three poles by turning with a drill and all are about equal. I'm stumped?
Hi, Darkeclipticheart are you sur you put your little plastic washer on the correct side? when I took my motor appart there was only 1 small washer on the opposite side to the brass bushing?? I dont know what side to put it back on:/ looking for an exploded view:)
yep, i was right, phew. check the exploded view on the instructions on the rebuild kit the small washer goes on the opposite side to the brass bushing. Have you had any issues with your motor? rspv thanks rc buddy
throw your bearings in the freezer for a bit when seating them in the can and motor plate. less force required to put them in place because the cold will slightly shrink them.
You can use brake cleaner but you really don't have to do anything with the motor but get out the debrees with compressed air. Anything beyond that could ruin the motor. Sometimes they come with rubber sealed bearings but they aren't recommended.
your video just saved me from buying a new engine thanks!!! my bearing came out which was causing the shaft to spin unevenly and my car wouldn't start, so thank you for posting this video. think I should just replace the bearing or get the replacement package?
Hey there - By chance would you know if I'd be able to follow similar maintenance steps for the Traxxas 2200kv motor that powers the E-Revo VXL 2.0? I accidentally landed in a ditch and the truck was half submerged for about 10-15 seconds. I'm concerned I'm going to have to do some comprehensive maintenance sooner than later. BTW - I followed your tips on how to sling water out of RC tires. That helped a ton! Although the first dremel hole was a tad messy :p Thanks for all the vids!
One stator will have 4 poles, the other will only have 2..... A 2 pole looks like it was split in half, only 2 sections. 2 pole Motors are GARBAGE in the RC World, especially when low speed control is Important. The 2 pole COGS horribly!!
Thanks a ton man! i was gonna rebuild it after seeing this cuz its been 2 years since i got it and i havent touched the motor, plus i saw how cheap the kits were. so hopefully this will solve that problem. Thanks for the super quick response you helped me a lot! Youre the best!
my shaft spins freely by my fingers (motor w/o power or hooked up at all), with what seems like no friction. i bought it second hand and i have yet to take it apart until now (Was searching for a video to help with end housing) so i will try it, but i fear that the motor is shot due to it not accepting reverse input when on sport mode.
i can't find any diagrams or pics of a part by part break down of the motor i took mine apart to rebuild it and the brass bushing fell off while i was working on it, 3 washers fell out 2 clear 1 white i don't know the placement of them since they fell out i'm sure there are others out there wondering the same thing i am. any info would be great thanks my motor is a current/current and as for the dirt that was in it must be that rubber flap by the wires lol

Weird to see an 8 year old video explaining exactly what i need now in 2020. Thanks! :)
And now in mid 2021👍🏼
@@douglascalhoun7041 now 2023
and now in 2024
I can't wait to see what's in my 5 year old slash motor never opened it at all
Mine's 3 years old, just run it through thick mud 2 days ago. SHITTING MYSELF
Same I haven’t even thought to look into my 5 year old stampede 😂
Well I have mine for 6 months and it broke already and sent it off already and getting it back soon
Mine only made it 2 months and not used much. Destroyed
Thank you very much from Saudi Arabia. Great video, clear recording! My Rustler VXL is 4 months old. I will surely need this video one day. Best wishes.
A lot simpler to do than I had imagined.
Great video Stay Awesome!
had my ultimate for less than a month and all hub bearings seized up . and the truck has never been wet
Thanks for the wrench-hammer tip!
Are those bearings an better upgrade or just an stock replacement
I used a hack saw and cut a groove in it then I used a flat head screwdriver to unscrew it. Or you can use a torx wrench that is slightly bigger then a 2 mm allen wrench.
Nope. You don't have to use any grease on the inside. Just make sure it's clean and you're good.
Always a good idea to use locktite on screws that hold metal to metal.
The rotor itself is a solid piece of metal or should be.
What about lubeing the bearings? Is it recommended?
Great up-to-date rebuild vid, thanks i'm rebuilding my velineon now can't believe how much dirt/grease was in side! what about the locktite for the 4 screws around the motor.. should you grease the rotor with marine grease? or any or lubricant? rsvp

fantastic motor. very well made. in my opinion one of the best on the market.
Hi, two things. I am cleaing my motor right now. Mine has rubber sealed bearings?? Also, can I use break cleaner for the cleaning and can I spray crc on the motor at the end?
Hey I am rebuilding my motor and I seem to have lost the washer do I really need it to drive my rc or can I use it with out it ?????
Love these how to videos, I watch a lot of them whether I need to or not to fix my rustler properly, but they have helped me so much
When do you know if you should rebuild or need to change the bearings in the Velineon..? This would help alot of my RC community Thanks.. does the motor begin to make more noise, have more play in the motor arm or..??
This video will help me rebuild mine! Thanks Jason.
If you cant use plyers to unscrew it you can use a drill or cut a slot in it with a drimel or hach saw and then use a phillips screwdriver to take it out.
So if i use mine like twice a week NOT full throttle constantly or mud how often should I rebuild?
Yes it would. In fact a bad bearing could do a lot of damage.
Im in the process of rebuilding and your video was great. I wish my bearing came out as easy as yours did. It actually broke so only the outer ring of the bearing is still stuck at the bottom so im going to try and figure out a way to get that out now. Thanks for your time though. +Lori Jackson NO that is not supposed to spin. Its supposed to be a solid piece.
+darkeclipticheart Thanks, put some loctite or permatex sleeve retainer on and working so far. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction
Awesome I just got one haven't done anything but I am definitely outing this video in my play list thank you for the advice
one of the windings came out but it didnt get damged the motor seems to run fine but should i be worried about the loose winding?
Would it be the same for a dynamite fuze brushless motor?
What would happen if you ran the motor with out the washers would anything bad happen?
If you have he replacement bearings then knock them out with the method I show. The bearings won't always come out so easily and sometimes it takes a few hard wacks with a hammer before they begin to move.
Same here. I found out the hard way with burning up the bearing in about 2 months time. Cleaning will take place more frequently.
thankyou for the video! very easy1!!!! but! i have a big problem now.... the washers i wasnt supposed to throw away, well there was only one between the bushing and the rotar- it was a jumper!!! Electric motors have magnetic resistance when you're just turning them with your finger
Yeah it does sound like the bearings inside the motor are giving out.
Do you think that a dirty, or seized bearing inside the motor would cause heat issues?
Hi there Dark, quick question.... can I clean the rotor with the contact cleaner, or it can be damaged if I do it??
is it possible replacing the main shaft from the rotor?,thanks...
Hi, Darkeclipticheart are you sur you put your little plastic washer on the correct side? when I took my motor appart there was only 1 small washer on the opposite side to the brass bushing?? I dont know what side to put it back on:/ looking for an exploded view:)
i just used a small screwdriver and went thru the front of the can and tapped it out slowly hope that helps
Thanks! BTW i use Duratrax Power Shot. It's VERY helpful for stuff like this and what i mainly use it for--bearings.
yep, i was right, phew. check the exploded view on the instructions on the rebuild kit the small washer goes on the opposite side to the brass bushing. Have you had any issues with your motor? rspv thanks rc buddy
No this does not void the warrenty as far as I know.
throw your bearings in the freezer for a bit when seating them in the can and motor plate. less force required to put them in place because the cold will slightly shrink them.
Good idea
Will this make breaking a lot better?
Yeah you will have to clean it more often but not THAT much often. Just a month sooner then usual should be fine.
Do you put any light machine oil on the bearing before you install them?
Thank you very much. I plan on doing this hopefully it will help keep the temp down. Mine has been over heating with a 2S on my Stampede 4x4 9t.
Were your bearings bad? or just submerge the car a lot?
Big big thanks for this video, it was a great help and answered many of my questions!
Most important tool of the bunch? HAMMER !!!!
you can install the engine in the e- revo 1/16 vxl ?? Yes pulls harder or less !?
Luis Fernando Aguilera Sanchez Yeah you can. You just have to buy the parts that hold it. The Engine brace and gear cover.
+darkeclipticheart and what is more powerful 380 or 3500
DUH!
Yeah WD-40 will attract dirt. It's a win lose thing to use.
It wouldn't hurt the motor to use lubricant inside the motor but it's not suggested.
Hey there - By chance would you know if I'd be able to follow similar maintenance steps for the Traxxas 2200kv motor that powers the E-Revo VXL 2.0? Great stuff!👍👍👊👊📹📹
um about the front bearing coming apart ya wats the best way to get it out mine is shreaded
Great vid dude 10/10👍🏎💨
Why did they get rid of that plastic cover ? Our 1/16 Revo doesn't have that
Looks like it would keep moisture out .
best video of how to~~ velineon!!! thank you.
How do you fix a blown up magnet? The magnet in mine is shot and Traxxas won't replace
I'm about to rebuild my 3500, thanks for the upload. Thumbs up =)
My only thought is to use a flat head screwdriver and pry it out.
What does the bushing do?
I live in a very dirty in viroment and my driveway Is rock and dirt so would I need to clean and rebuild more often
Your videos are great. I appreciate watching them and learning from you. You have saved me time and money. Thanks!
Any more performance?
What type of glue would you use to Re glue the shaft to the magnet? Mine seems to work but once it has pressure it on it won’t spin
is this a four pole system? Is the old one with screws on the side four pole too?
+Rc Ghost99 This is the old Motor. I don't know what the difference is between the new 4 pole and the old one.
One stator will have 4 poles, the other will only have 2.....
A 2 pole looks like it was split in half, only 2 sections. 2 pole Motors are GARBAGE in the RC World, especially when low speed control is Important. The 2 pole COGS horribly!!
thx for the help!!! really needed it after a strand/beach run with my slash vxl 4x4 :D
Remember to silicone glue "fill in" the two extra motor mount holes,..... these extra screw holes allow dirt and sand a passage to the inside the can.
Aren't the covered by the plate?
Thanks for a informative video, great work!!
Thanks a ton man! i was gonna rebuild it after seeing this cuz its been 2 years since i got it and i havent touched the motor, plus i saw how cheap the kits were. so hopefully this will solve that problem. Thanks for the super quick response you helped me a lot! Youre the best!
does the rebuild make it better then before
+Preston Gerimonte The bearings are better in the rebuild kit for the old velineon motor. However it won't make it any faster, just more efficient.
is there a traxxas repair kit for the vxl-3m
Awesome Job!!
did your motor or esc fry yet? or still running strong?
+impjig In fact I've fried 2 of these. one over heated and the other ones button got stuck and eventually fried.
i bought a rc truck off marketplace, a slash 4x4 greg adler editiong, the motor is over 10 year old and i rebuild it next week
Never had any problems with it so far.
i have a screw stripped out... shall i grind it off then use a drill?
Will it fix the recoil in the motor
Thank you this video was extremely helpful
Can I use brake cleaner on the inside of the motor?
Does this make the motor faster or anything otherwise this helped a lot thanks.
No it doesn't help it go faster but it does help it run easier which means it will last longer.
did the motor spin pretty easy after the rebuild? I did the same rebuild and my motor doesn't spin that easy now
Hey if the motor burns up can i just rebuild it or what?
my shaft spins freely by my fingers (motor w/o power or hooked up at all), with what seems like no friction. i bought it second hand and i have yet to take it apart until now (Was searching for a video to help with end housing) so i will try it, but i fear that the motor is shot due to it not accepting reverse input when on sport mode.
@thejordan343 Don't drive in water. WD40 helps preventing rust.
good video well done
It appears that the shaft itself (where i put the pinion gear on) is slightly bent, and i was wondering if there is a replacement that i could buy?
what about the 2 washers ?
Did you have an issue with one of you VXL motors or did you just rebuild it for the sake of maintenance.
It was an old motor and the bearings were shot. It was also having some heating issues.
i had a question on the velineon motor is there a process u have to go through to break in the brushless motor please get backi to me thanks...
i can't find any diagrams or pics of a part by part break down of the motor i took mine apart to rebuild it and the brass bushing fell off while i was working on it, 3 washers fell out 2 clear 1 white i don't know the placement of them since they fell out i'm sure there are others out there wondering the same thing i am. any info would be great thanks my motor is a current/current and as for the dirt that was in it must be that rubber flap by the wires lol
could it be good to put some silicone oil on the bearings ... since they spin so fast ?
Bearing oil, yes. use a flathead screwdriver to take of the shields, and clean with motor cleaner, and re oil
How about changing out the shift itself if its broke
or you happy with a vilineon moter?
@darkelipticheart I replaced my rotor done the exact same thing as you but the rotor is not spinning freeley at all, do you know what the problem is?
Great video
Helped me a lot
