I found this video by accident whilst reading your book. Very useful, no fluff just the method and the config. Thank you for keeping it clear and concise.
Hi Tonny, Yes, you can use it with 8.4 and 9.1. I have included updates on the book's errata page and on the soundtraining blog as needed, but most things work. If you find something I've missed, let me know and I'll update the errata page accordingly. The book includes links to online resources including the errata page. Thanks for your comment. Don
The book is written for people who are new to the ASA, but who do have some experience with networks. If you already have experience with switches and routers, the Accidental Administrator ASA book will probably be appropriate for you.
Finally i found a course of ASA administration! than you very much for this videos and for share your knowledge with us. As soon as i can, i will buy the book, it looks really interesting. Greetings from Santiago of Chile.
Don, it was so easy to follow along with you as you laid out all the content, thank you! I'm heading over to soundtraining.net to find out more about your materials.
Thanks a Lot for this video. I am new on ASA security Appliances i am working on Switches and routers please suggest relevant book for ASA Appliances to beginner or if i can use your same book?
Hello Don - I was about to get your book at Amazon.com today but I realize that you book the software is still based on version 8.3(1). I was hoping that your book based on either 8.4 or 9.0. Please advise me if I can use your book with ASA 5505 version 8.4? Thanks
Thanks Don, a nice step by step explanation which compliments the book, which I recommend. My 5505 is now up and working. PS. A video covering Cisco AP (wireless access points e.g. Aironet 1130) would be a nice addition.
hi Sir, its really amazing videos. thanks a lot. I bought the book yesterday and I am looking to see all of your videos regarding to cisco ASA security appliance but I could not find it into the website. can you please guide me step by step?
good day sir, i'm just starting my journey with the Security realm, and I think i've stumbled on a treasure here. :).. this may be a dumb question, but for your Cisco-ASA-Training-101, should I watched this in chronological order, as how you've arranged it.? from 1 -20 :), i mean does each topic dependent to its precedence.? tia
Great question. PAT is a form of NAT. When you use the "dynamic" option in the NAT statement, you're telling the firewall to use Port Address Translation. Thanks for your comment.
@@doncrawley Thank you for your reply. Do you find it curious that the cisco ASA commands for interfaces, and NAT configuration are different than on cisco Routers?
@@marcwharton4803 Good question, Marc. I always assumed that was because the routers were older Cisco devices and the ASA was based on the PIX firewall which was an acquired product. Like I said, that was an assumption. If anyone knows the facts, I'd love to hear them!
@@doncrawley "the ASA was based on the PIX firewall which was an acquired product" I'll buy this answer. Thank you for your communication. You've gained a fan!
just a question since no one asking this, but, everyone talk about NAT, what about a tutorial about transparent mode, i mean not just the setup, everyone finish at the basic configuration and leave out the network object and filtering, what about the filtering, are they the same in routed mode and transparent mode. thank you. PS i already order your book from amazon :)
Joseph Mendoza Thanks for ordering my book. Check out these videos on transparent mode: th-cam.com/video/Tv8Vag4eVdo/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/gj8LU3qoC2M/w-d-xo.html
12 years later and I am still finding this useful. Thanks
You're welcome. I'm glad it's still helpful. Thanks for your comment.

Do you know where I can get a lab or software to practice my hands-on with the video?

when are you going to make an update for those videos? Many of the commands are different now a days and cannot be used either ://
Thanks for the video. I do have one question about the NAT part. I heard no mention of PAT while setting up NAT. Does it do this automatically?
Great question. PAT is a form of NAT. When you use the "dynamic" option in the NAT statement, you're telling the firewall to use Port Address Translation.

why does a text string have to be fido or billybob? is one better than the other?
I'm building out a home lab to learn CCNA then CCNP. Would this be a good addition?
You're welcome. Glad you like it.
Excellent Video! a good refresher for me I haven't used my Cisco skills in years.
Thanks for the video especially for people like us who are traditional network and wanna start learning security.
Also think of including Video CD in your next book for Cisco ASA
That's a great idea. Unfortunately, the service I use for printing and distributing the books doesn't support including CDs. Perhaps in the future! :)
Hello sir! Are these ASA commands still in use with modern ASA appliances in 2022?
Hi Marc. I'd recommend doing a search on the version of Cisco software that you're using to find the current set of commands.

I didn't understand that why you create vlan here? Can't we directly assign IP address on interface?
+Md. Alamgir Hossain On higher end ASAs, it is not necessary to create a VLAN. On the 5505 which I used in the demo, it is. Thanks for your question.
