Hello Edgar! I just started coming across your videos and have found them to be absolutely fascinating! In relation to this video, is there any chance you can make a video one of these days comparing the different types of wood used for pegs such as ebony, boxwood, rosewood, pernambuco, etc, the differences, and which are better for certain scenarios? Would be super helpful to see! Thanks and keep up the awesome videos!!
Thank you so much, Edgar for sharing your valuable skills and experience. I have installed Wittner geared pegs and thought they were quite a good concept, but it is surprising to me to hear that even pros like them. I thought maybe they might spurn them as not being 'purist'.
Hi Edgar! I am planning on joining your patreon. Already in the academy. There is not really a luthier in my area... even though orchestra is in all the schools. There is a music shop... but they use super glue to fix things... they told me with pride themselves. They are not allowed to touch my instruments... but the nearest luthier is 6 hours away in a different state... and in the winter that drive is very dangerous. So what is a musician to do?... and the thought came "you could look in to it and try to fill the void"... so here I am... learning new things from Edgar every day!
Thanks for your video Edgar. I had a thought about adjusting the sharpener to the reamer, can one just loosen the sharpener blade, install the reamer into the sharpener, butt up the blade of the sharpener to the reamer, then tighten the sharpener blade? I don’t have either tool but seems to me this might get you at least closer if not very close?
Reamer alignment problem: Are there reamers who have a cylindrical extension at the tip? (German: mit Führungsdorn) Might solve the tilting flaw. Did you ever hear of the "Atelier Mörth" titanium pegs? They claim better slip performance with sufficient stick properties.
I wait to see AI making violins as a luthier and makin some money, hehe. Honestly, I dont know how to thank enough. So many important details, excelent and truly honest. I purchased one peg shaver form aliexpres, and, it came to be not suficient even for a 3/4 violin, and I dont have smaler one to test the fitings, hehe, talking about mesurments. So im trying to make them fit atleast 3/4 one, time consumin g is crasy, and the nervs and confusion hundred like these situations hapens, its overhelming, but, its life I gues. Greetings from nearbuy country, and, Im afraid AI SUNO app could soon play instruments and compose beter than the best violinists and we are all put out of the job, and im just yet a biginer, what a future for me... what do you think? If we see designer images AI can make, you understand can do same good at anything..
Im sorry, but Il have to say this, you mister said that you make your own peg shaver and that those you buy even in geremany, even when buying both rimer and shaver with the same maker, store, it doesnt fit, so you make your own peg shaver out of wood, and that is as i saw black wood maybe eboy. So, now, all this video was excelent, excelent perfect, only one mistake, how do we no aply all this wonerful knowledge you shared with us if the first step we dont know how, yes, thats right, how to make the peg shaver, hahaha, its a pain in the brain puzle for me honestly, just like when i used hundreds of jars and botles some jars for 4 litres, and botles plastic 5, 6 litlres to mix the olive oil so one day i get arnold swizeneger muscles by shaking those biceps, than i can get that oil, and it didnt work and i failed, but these pegs i relay need my 5 violins are just colecting dust and as i see nothing will come out me becoming unbelivable good violin maker. huh, anyways, do you need aprentence maybe, heh, well, if yu show us the sicret of making one perfect violin peg it would be most perfect of all realy wonderful videos on you probably by faar bst violin making yt chanel, thank you mister.
In one way or another you are right and I understand what you actually mean; but on the other side if everything is ,made as it should be it is nice to see how these old fashion style pegs when they are well fitted are working so great. All the best from Cremona Edgar

Great content for players and amateurs! Not many professionals are willing to share this knowledge in such detail. Benefits the community.
Thanks Gert! You are a violinmaker as well so I appreciate your comment even more.
The 3 blade reamer also burnishes the hole which helps create a good bearing surface.

That Sounds interesting and Great!
I am happy that I can help You a Little!
Thank you.
I admire the antique Strad drill press in the background.
Question: why don’t violins use modern geared tuners instead of pegs?
@Edgar, if you stop the frame at 40:43, i see a nice external mould, i want that :)

I see you recommend Precision Pegs. Can you please explain why you prefer them over the competition, such as Wittner?
I feel like Ghandi now: to answer your question give me the time to check out other brands before. Hold on..........
Ciao Edgar, grazie for your interesting videos. Have you ever tried Berbuer-Wirbelschneider (peg shaper)?
Couldn’t you use a dowel about the same size as a peg base to test the sharpener?

You seem to have not made this private as expected. This came up on my front page and I've never seen you :P
Shhhhhhhh. 🤫
I didn't quite catch how the sharpener is adjusted, you talked about filing the pegs until they fit, didn't you?
Exactly!
Are u from Romania sir? I realize u speak italian however the accent is interesting as are your body movement.

Are seriously not using geared pegs?it's 2023 for heaven's sake LOL. Those friction pegs should be outlawed!
I hope you are not using an abacus.
