Do you not realise that Jo Cox was murdered (assassinated) by a crazy far right supporter just two election cycles before this one? It was just 2016 after she won her seat in 2015 when that happened. I was watching the coverage on Sky news, and they brought in a republican close to Trump who was saying Biden had "blood on his hands". Fuelling more hate after an incident like this is shameful.

Rory is so much more balanced, in general, than Alistair. Of course this dreadful episode will have a positive effect on Trump’s election prospects. I wish it wouldn’t, but it almost definitely will. American politics has never been so toxic, not since the Civil War. America, I regret to say is going to hell in a hand basket.
That’s true, unfortunately he never pushes back against AC, so the overall effect is that he appears to condone some of Alastairs more partisan moments. It’s a shame because it makes the podcast look less objective.

Biden recently stated this, but it's categorically false. In actuality, he would retain full control over the funds. Biden could legally transfer the funds to the DNC, support a new nominee through a super PAC, distribute funds to multiple campaigns of his choosing (within legal limits), redirect them to charitable causes, or even refund donors.
Saying that Trump went into a straight arm salute is absolutely uncalled for. The man just narrowly survived a gunshot. I'm a long time viewer and will continue to be passionate about this channel, but suggesting that Trump went into a nazi salute is absolutely over the top.

I get the sense that Alastair doesn’t quite grasp how different US politics is to the UK. This won’t just slightly affect the campaigns, this is (politically) a masterstroke for Trump. This almost surely confirms a win for him I would think
I live outside Boston, MA now but I grew up in Butler and I still have family there. The last day and a half has been utterly surreal. I have been watching the pundits, the news, the predictable partisan dissections and at the same time I am painfully aware of the trauma that members of my hometown are experiencing at this moment. Yes Butler is very much Trump country but the entire community, even those who would never attend a Trump rally or vote for him, are in a state of shock right now. The town I grew up in will from hereon be associated with the attempted assassination of one of the most divisive, and I daresay notorious presidents in US history. My god even hearing you mention the Butler Farm Show (a yearly summer fair with carnival and farm animal exhibitions) on this podcast is simply bizarre. I can’t stand Trump but I am impressed at his ability to turn a near-assassination into the photo op of the year. Damn it, I am afraid this may have clinched a win for Trump in November.

This podcast is really wonderful and I think you're both fulfilling a civic duty by developing the political understanding of listeners. But when I hear Alastair immediately alluding to Hitler, it worries me. There is no reason to believe that Trump was trying to feign a Nazi salute, and saying that he was really makes me question this podcast's credibility. Otherwise, I take Alastair's analysis as sound and professional -- but sometimes, it seems like the spin is produced unintentionally, probably after years of conditioning. I don't necessarily blame Alastair, but I think he should take a moment next time to consider his words more carefully, and maybe evaluate his analysis's objectivity.

I watched the Farage interview before watching this as it happens. Farage was talking about Brand because the interviewer moved the subject to attacks on him. And Brand joked that attackers should use more harmful substances than milkshakes but still has a job at the BBC somehow. He wasn't blaming her for the attack on Trump at all. I would be interested to hear Rory and Alastair's commentary on Robert Kennedy Jnr's candidacy given that he has allegedly been denied security service protection and especially given that his father (not mentioned in the list of public figures) and uncle were both assassinated. I don't necessarily agree with all his positions on issues such as Palestine for example but Alastair has previously discounted him as a nutter out of hand but in fact he appears to be a very viable candidate with very thoughtful and nuanced positions. Perhaps I'm missing something but given this extreme polarised and clearly dangerous American election surely independent candidates deserve some in depth discussion?

I keep trying to listen to this podcast, as it’s been recommended by several friends - but seriously?…. The almost adolescent political bias denudes it of its otherwise substantial intellectual heft. I’d advise listeners to check out UnHerd; whilst it may appear less heavyweight, and definitely leans more to the Right, they do at least aim at a less pretentious, more inquisitive pursuit of the truth.
In the US, once you have been a President, you are called "President" for the rest of your life. Some might use "former President" but either is correct.

He has the right to be called President but, unfortunately, calling Mr Trump 'President' plays into his hands sine he and some of his followers believe that he is the current President. Hence, I think its safer to call him 'former President'.
That's interesting - Emily Post states the precise opposite - that former President or Mr Trump is the correct form of address depending whether third person or direct address, the same logic extending to Mayors, Governors etc. Perhaps her advice has gone out of date? (I know she's an historic figure now, but I'm British so I'm used to a lot of etiquette forms not changing even over centuries!)

It's universally understood that when you call something "democratic" you are praising it, and that when you call something "fascist" or "medieval" you are condemning it. This, despite a lack of any agreed-upon definition of any of the terms. Political discourse becomes a meaningless show of "I support good things. I oppose bad things."

The "fight fight fight" raised arm thing,. is probably the most scary part to me, because it's such a deeply rooted emotional response (especially as noted, at that moment Trump didn't really know what was going on). All he knows is he wants conflict and fighting. He wants to look like the fighter,.. and he wants everyone around him to be fighting. Because he thrives in the chaos of conflict. That's not the kind of America we should be striving for. (that kind of "strong armed facism everyone in conflict with each other, only the strong bullies win" kind of vibe). No thank you. Trump’s response was particularly alarming. He seemed crazed not strong. The follow up statement was quite sober thankfully. Biden as well as Trump should quit the race now.

I’m glad you were able to explain the emotion content of Trump saying fight, but you put too much strategizing spin on it. I think Trump was just saying what he was feeling to his audience and they responded how they were feeling. They chant USA, USA, which is saying we’re going come together to succeed. They chant it when someone suggests an optimistic plan for the country and they chant it when they’re under attack.
and both parties regularly say "fight", it's a euphemism for don't give up, keep working to win the election. Any time either side tries to paint the other in some kind of way, for saying "fight" to their supporters, it's unbelievably cringe. Everyone knew what "fight" meant in political context, until january 6th and it became an easy way to scapegoat Trump.

I've had a lot of days recently where I'm ashamed to be American. Ever since Trump came to politics it has devolved from passionate yet civil debates to hate-filled speeches and mudslinging. The sheer volume of vitriol that comes from him during his presidency has always put me on edge and made me more protective of my friends. He brings out the absolute worst in people through fear and intimidation. I'm also always ashamed to see him as president in foreign settings because the president doesn't just represent foreign policy he/she is a reflection of the American people.
To think that people in our ally countries view Americans through Trump's image makes me fear for our long-term image in the world. Please know that there are millions of Americans who see Trump for who he really is and desperately want to keep him away from the White House. Joe Biden may be old, but he has more compassion and empathy than anyone we've seen in the presidency in a long time. Not all Americans are like Trump. Please have faith and keep us in your prayers.
As for Campbell’s assertion that other political murders have led to unification, I seem to remember when Jo Cox was murdered a very loud condemnation of Brexit attitudes as one causal factor, coming from the left of UK politics.

This is a bizarre interpretation of what happened. The endless attempts of Campbell to reframe and misrepresent what happened is nauseating. Rory knows exactly what Campbell is doing yet fails to call him out. This is the problem with the left - they change framing and language, it’s incredibly manipulative.
My reaction to this after ascertaining that it is indeed real and not somehow faked, Is that Trump will have a HUGE almost unassailable advantage in this upcoming election. The Couch-sitters will come out for him everywhere. After this, at this point I cant see how Trump Loses, given the Democrat Biden Debacle we currently have.
It is not and should not be about a candidate. It is about self-rule, it is about policies, it is about future directions. People who make their livings speaking into cameras attribute far far too much importance to president Biden's shortcomings in speaking into a camera.
I don't doubt that Biden is still on the ball behind the scenes, but his gaffes have become too frequent now, it's embarrassing, and public speaking is an important part of being a leader. He often appears very tired and old, and the verbal slips hammer that impression home.

A critical issue may well be how Dr Jill Biden reacts to this news. So far, she has been playing a critical role in propping up her husband's candidacy.
I was disappointed at the political points scoring by some opportunists. The accusations by some Republicans this was caused by the rhetoric of the other team, the hypocrasy being their own refusal to accept an election result leading to the deaths of 9 people during the Capitol attack. All these events are deplorable and both sides could do with lowering the temperature. But I doubt many of us will hold our breath on that one.

I think I recall discussion during the primaries that, in some states, only registered republicans could vote in the republican primary. Some voters may have registered purely to vote against him in those primaries, so it’s entirely plausible that the person identified as the shooter may have been one such person. I don’t think that we can use that registration as evidence of anything.

Alistair, Britain is not a proper democracy, because the people cannot vote for the head of state, also, the whips in parliament coerce MPs to toe the party line, by telling them that they will be deselected as a party MP if they don’t do, this, despite an MP’s constituent’s wanting their elected MP to vote for and voice their thoughts on issues, which may not be in line with the party view. So summing up, you should not say that Britain is a democratic country. It isn’t for those reasons, sadly.
There's no obligation for a democracy to have an elected head of state, especially one with limited power and largely ceremonial. Plenty of other democracies have similar head of state roles whether hereditary, appointed or elected by a convention or similar - Spain, Japan, Australia, Germany, Canada, Italy, Norway, New Zealand, Greece, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, and others. Would you describe those countries as not being democracies?
Even if an MP is deselected or had the whip removed by their political party, there is nothing preventing that MP from running for re-election at the next general election as an independent or for another political party. Happens all the time, most recently Lee Anderson (from Conservative to Reform) and Jeremy Corbyn (from Labour to independent) as examples. The constituency's electorate still directly elect their representative to parliament.
So summing up, Britain is a democracy in that system's most accepted definition.

In respect to whips, it is for this reason parliament is UNDEMOCRATIC, simply because MPs of a party are compelled to vote as their party wants, and not as the people want. Yes they can go as independents, this is true for two or three rebels against their party, but only a few are successful such as Corbyn, Anderson etc.
Summing up, In a proper democracy the head of state is elected by the people, and there should be no whips of any political party, allowing for MPs to vote freely what their constituents want, and whatever party should accept this as democracy.

@@redrebel103 So you're a republican. That's a perfectly valid political system but doesn't actually mean it is any more democratic than any other. In fact many republics are most definitely not democratic, such as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea).
Just FYI, Australians don't elect their head of state (constitutional monarchy), nor do Germans (federal convention). In fact some in Australia refer to its political system as a "crowned republic".
Again, while you prefer a directly elected head of state, it doesn't make states less democratic if they don't have one. Using that argument isn't a good argument for a republic.

But again, being a republic doesn't solve that if you feel the party political system is anti-democratic. Even the most democratic republics have political parties. Some, like the US, where they are so dominant, that it's almost purely a two-party system with almost no independent representation outside of them.
The UK is as democratic as any other country modelled on the western liberal model. Some bits are less democratic, some more. Some less representative, some more. Each has its drawbacks. If you want to make an argument for republicanism, then being more democratic ain't it.
