In this video I claim that the Shattered Dimensions game was the origins of the Spider-Verse concept, and that is not accurate. The concept of a Spider-Man multiverse actually goes back at least as far as the 90's Spider-Man animated series.
This was a significant oversight in my research and I apologize. I try to do everything I can to make A Brief History a reliable source of information no matter the topic. And this kind of inaccuracy is something I do not want to let happen again.

The past few years have been unusually great for Marvel's Spiderman, haven't they? Between Spiderman Homecoming, Spiderman PS4, and appearances in other various MCU films, Spiderman has kinda become the only superhero that matters. And that status was cemented by last year's hit animated film, "Spiderman Into The Spider Verse." And in today's episode of, "A Brief History," we take a look at how an obscure video game inspired one of the best superhero movies of all time!

Spider-Verse probably has (in my opinion) the best looking computer animation I’ve ever seen in a animated film. This film will look bonkers in HDR when the 4K Blu-ray is out (which makes me regret not seeing the film in Dolby Cinema when I had the chance).

well actually the idea of a spider verse came from the 1994 animated spider-man series where in season 5 episode 12 (Spider Wars, Chapter 1) spider-man is transported to another dimension with a lot of other spider-men (iron-spider, scarlet-spider, an early version of a superior spider-man etc) where they have to stop an evil spider-man and kingpin from destroying the multi verse

For me, there was the repeated imagery of the number 42 in the film. Either it’s a really vague Hitchhikers Guide reference or it could be something more. Not sure yet.

The new show is not as likable and while I commend them for trying to bring the science back into Pete's character its tone doesn't feel right to me.

You failed to mention the "Spider-Geddon" comic.
And the '90s show version of the Multiverse.
It doesn't really tie into the history of the movie. And Ultimate Spider-Man did another Spider-verse arc introducing Spider-Gwen. The original story set the ground work but doesn't tie into the movie and also he has stated he doesn't keep up to date with the comics and that story recently ended.

Spider Verse won every Annie Award it was nominated for, major props to the entire team. They did an excellent job, it's a stunning work of art. One of my favorite movies of all time, can't wait till it comes out so I can watch it again and again.

What I love, what I LOVE, is how almost everyone, everyone forgets that the idea of multiple spidermen crossing over to the same world, is basically as old as the classic animated Spiderman series from the 90s. So, yeah, Spider-verse is actually more or less a reboot.

Let’s be real this is the best movie ever
I've played Shattered Dimensions when I was 10. I freaking loved it. Basically, Mysterio tries to steal the Tablet of Order and Cahos, and Spider-Man accidentally shatters it when trying to stop Mysterio. The parts of it go into different dimensions. So Madam Web gets Amazing Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Man Noir, and Ultimate Spider-Man to collect the pieces. But Mysterio managed to get a piece when Amazing Spider-Man shattered it. The tablet gives Mysterio actual magic powers, and so all 4 Spider-Men have to stop him.
There's also an unofficial sequel, Spider-Man: Edge of Time. That's also a good one.

I don't read the comics, but I def remember a Spiderverse in the '90s Spider-man cartoon. In the very last episode, after all the Spider-men go back to their universes our Spider-man comes to the "real world" (still animated) and talks to Stan Lee.

You forgot about the (I want to say)90s cartoon that had an entire storyline about the spiderverse! All I know that it was one of the older cartoons before the video game. Heck it even had the actor for Spider-Man as one of the alternative Spider-Men. It even ended with STAN LEE TALKING TO SPIDER-MAN AS STAN LEE AND NOT A CAMEO!

I forgot I used to LOVE Spider-Man back when I was little. Even more than any other super. All of this has taken me back to my early years and I'm happy.
As far as my eyes can see, seeing this CG with 2D-like presentations could spell a brighter future for CG movies. Seriously, I do miss 2D animation in movies, but if future animated movies had this aesthetic, I'm all for it!
Into the spider verse is truly great and it's fun to see som backstory to the concept. The only comment I have on your video is about the way you mentioned spider-sonas. The way you said it puts it in such a negative light, while spider-sonas is actually a really nice and pure thing. It's derived from the line from the movie "anyone can wear the mask. YOU could wear the mask" which encourages people to believe that they could be heroes. Spider-sonas aren't hurting anyone and it's simply people creating their own version of spiderman. I would appreciate if people could be allowed to imagine themselves as superheroes without being shamed for it.
Man, spider-verse was a good movie. When I saw the trailers, I didn’t even think it would be any good, but it was BREATHTAKING.

Mysterio had a tablet that gave him magic powers, but it broke and pieces traveled across different dimensions, so the Spider Men had to get them back.

This is very much the golden age of Spider-Man.
Everything about this movie was incredible. The animation, the characters, the humour, the spider-sonas, it’s all awesome!
I cant deny I would absolutely love love love seeing like a movie just about spider noir. He seems so interesting to me!
He's only Peter Parker if he grew up in the Great Depression era. If you like that kind of setting then you should check out the comics, I sadly don't find him interesting outside of having other characters bounce off of him.
Noir is a LOT more... well, noir in the original Marvel Noir stories.

I'm not a huge superhero movie fan, but after seeing Spider-Verse, I can see why people love this.
The 1994 Spider-Man cartoon did a massive multi-dimensional Spider-Man crossover where Spider-Carnage was trying the destroy the multiverse and Madame Web brought together several Spider-Men to stop him including the cartoon’s prime Spider-Man and an actor from our dimension who played Spider-Man and it ended with the cartoon’s Spider-Man being introduced to Stan Lee from our dimension, played by himself. By the way, Madame Web was voices by Stan Lee’s wife.
Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions was a HUGE part of my childhood
I saw this movie the day it came out. And that day just happened to be my birthday. It was THE BEST birthday present ever!

I'm not sure I'd really call the Spiderverse comic event a massive crossover persay, because although in the fiction there's all these universes crossing over, there wasn't really that many comic titles being brought together.
Like there was:
-Spiderman from the present, who had his own comic series
-Spiderman from like a year ago in the same comic series when his body was taken over by Doc Ock
-Spiderman's clone who had gotten a pretty good comic series of his own (he dies in the event because comic crossover events always suck and make everything they touch worse)
-Miles Morales, the Spiderman from the Ultimate universe comics
-Jessica Drew, who has literally no relation to Spiderman in any way, but since she was originally created in Marvel's days of proactively defending their copyrights, she has a similar name. (the crossover didn't do her no favors either)
-Spiderman 2099, Spider-ham, and a few other characters who had been at one point established in the multiverse but had no ongoing titles, along with some new spider-people invented just for the event like Silk and Spider-Gwen
The Spiderverse crossover event was terrible and I had low expectations for the movie, but the movie was made to stand on its own, unlike crossover events or certain other marvel movies, so it had room to be good.
I love the spider-sona aspect!! They were so amazing.

Don't forget the series finale of the Spiderman animated television series from the 90s. There was one major episode featuring 12 different spidermen
I remember that game, it was one of my first exposures to my favorite 3 characters of the Marvel universe: Deadpool, Spiderman Noir and Spidey 2099
The best part about Spider-Man into the spiderverse is that at the ending of Avengers Infinity war *spoilers* the post end credit scene it shows a brief peek of Spiderman into the spiderverse which is awesome
Okay, so on my birthday (Dec 8) I was going to go see Spiderman Into The Spiderverse (smts as I will now say) at the Xtreme theatre (I think that's what it's called) and I was really hyped for. Me and my friend Alpha Skeptic (that's his TH-cam name) and my mom walked in and we saw a family walk up to the person that let's people in and I saw they were talking and the family walked away looking sad. By now I began to panic, "we're they steeling? We're they not let in? Did the movie not work? What's going on!" So we walk up to the person and she said "I'm sorry we are out of seats you can't go in." The worst part is, we didn't even get a refund they just said that we could see a movie early for free soon. When he said 300 million dollars I was like, “nah that’s doesn’t mean lots of people like it.” Honesty that pretty average for a superhero movie if anything below average which sucks because this was a movie that should have received wide spread approval from every comic book and spiderman fan. I hope the oscars give the award for best animated movie to spiderverse cause they deserve it and need to get more people seeing it.
