    The IC is a dual power amp and the circuit is a bridge mode power amplifier. The the DC output to the motor is a net zero V when the two CDS photo resistive cells received the same amount of light. If one cell gets more light and the other less, the output to the motor leads is unbalanced and the motor turns until balance is restored. The two cells and the two resistors form what is called a bridge circuit.
    The use of the speaker is a distraction. It is merely used as a convenient stand for the the motor and the rest of the circuit.
    In the electronics education system this is the sort of impressive little project the students in a high school technology class will build for educational purposes. Technology wise it is a really simple circuit and definitely not an invention as the principle of the bridge circuit has been known since the around 1833. But because it moves, it impresses the heck out of non-technology minded people.
    Definitely worthwhile for a high student interested in some hands on electronics knowledge. I started with similar level stuff in the 1960s and made a successful career out of it.

      I like the novelty of circuts like these. It's a reminder that not every circuit I build has to follow lab protocol. That sometimes the simplicity and building the circuit freeform like this is just plain fun.

      DM Fraser Am I correct in my assumption that chip is similar to or a clone of the TDA2822, which is found in a lot of inexpensive computer speakers and similar applications?

      Be artsy and put it in a lightweight sunflower. It would track the sun like the real flower. Just to update steampunk, have it move the gnome non a sundial. Rube Goldberg? Of course but it’s nice to have fun.

    This project works as described. I've built several. I had to as the D2822 chip kept burning out due to the motors back EMF. I eventually solved this problem by using 2 1N4007 (or 1N4001 will work too) diodes placed in opposite directions on the negative and positive wires just before they enter the motor. This has permanently fixed the problem for me and after using multiple motors and batteries to see what works best the circuit still works excellent.

    Made something similar in high school (like 25 years ago) that actually tracked an 18volt 100W solar panel with 2 solar wafers cells and a solar plant rotator. The solar wafers were connected positive of one to negative of the other and the same to the other side. The plant rotator had a motor and gearbox in it and when the light hit both panels at the same time, the circuit was balance. But when one panel got more light than the other, one panel became the source and the other a load and rotated the base until the circuit was balanced again. No battery required.

      I imagine this is still very susceptible to errors. Such as headlights at night... a raspi would be overkill, but a microcontroller with low energy mode (IIRC ESP32 draws like 10uA) adds a lot of capabilities to deal with error and completely shut the circuit off at night.
      There's probably a better way to do this using I sense, such as ACS711/715, to make sure the panel is always pointed at max supply.

    Greetings from California. Thank you for the design , meaning the placement of passive components in symmetrical order. This process require a lot of intelligence and care. Great.
    The Electronics involved is flabbergasting. Simple, but very effective, sensitive and innovative. I find that this design concept can be incorporated for various “OTHER” purposes, like instead of light activation it can be made to audio activation and then into relay controlled many many systems. ( I don’t want to elaborate due sensitive infringement) Specebo.

      @DFX2KX 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      up to a point. Audio requires a lot more circuitry regardless, since mics produce very little voltage on their own.

      Alright, Sir... Since you put it that way... such devices are in existence , in very very sensitive areas. Gun placements and search lights are activated with sound from....... etc etc... your system can also be activated with proximity sensors......... definitely it can be done...and you will be able to do it. I wish you all the best. Specbo. 73s

    Adding a second axis would be worthwhile. That way the panels could do vertical as well as horizontal travel. Some kind of switch (my preference would be a magnet with a magnetic switch) to stop it turning too far in any direction. Might need to add diodes to make that work.
    It's a great basic idea BUT it needs to be strong to withstand wind (which means heavy which means yet more power consumption).
    The video title kinda made me think I was going to be viewing one of those free energy from random components glued together joke videos.

    • @melparrishjr
      @melparrishjr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Zephod Beeblebrox
      I'm not so sure that it would need to be heavy at all. I think all you really need to do is allow for air-flow through it. It's kinda like a mobile home awning screen/enclosure. Some people neglect to allow for air-flow in their design when putting them up. The next thing you know their awning is up in the air flying around like a newspaper! Microbursts do that. The more resistance we create against the air in our designs the more explosive the pressure wave is when it's released.
