Ah yes, todays Saturday morning special is my cup of tea! Today we get another glimpse of day to day cabin life and how things run and work. Watching and seeing all the little things like a weather alert radio on the table, a dirty stove burner or a blessed coffee mug to go with that excellent choice of shirt. We become entangled in these videos critiquing along thinking what we would do or set different if we were there or this was our slice of paradise. I myself thinking of what my solar set up would be or better yet how did those potatoes really turn out…(hint to vonnie) but never the less you take us along with you every week and make us feel like this was our cabin in life and we are a special part of it.
I only hope that one day your cabin will receive the stature as Dick Proenneke’s did.
    God bless

Got up to the cabin this weekend and wow the mosquitos were thick. Still a fun time though and got the cabin stained and loft floor boards squared up and ready to install. Even got to experience my first night time thunderstorm at the cabin. Nothing more peaceful falling asleep to hearing the rain on the tin roof!

Dear Martin, I'm visiting my property I bought last year for the first time this month and am about to head out there from the apartment I rented while I'm here in about 10 minutes. Inspired by you! And I'm asking the former owner to give me his thoughts on the best site for a cabin today as well as planting fruit trees to be enjoyed when the cabin is in. It will take several years to get it ready to come to and live in (I still have to work), but I wanted you to know. It's the future and life I want and I can't wait to come here for good. Cheers to you and Vonnie!

Folks from the late 1800s’ like all my grandparents referred to living “hand to mouth”. They did not mean poor. Those eggs remind me of that. Growing your own vegetables, pork, lard, cracklings, ham, beef, honey, milk and butter, flour ground from your own wheat, corn meal from your own corn, popcorn, peanuts, apples, peaches, cherries, strawberries, figs and fig preserves, sauerkraut, molasses and anything else you really wanted or needed was a way of life. By 1958 it was over for the most part but it was the best life I ever saw. Christmas brought oranges from far away, chocolate drops, Red Bird brand peppermint sticks, store bought orange candy “slices” and real homemade fruit cake from real dried fruits and the smell of the fresh cut cedar tree from the south facing pasture land in the living room. This was the world that so many people strive to recreate today. What does that say about “modern life”?

Shabbat Shalom, Martin. OMG one bug looked to be the size of a bat just as you said there were a few bug flying around. I really hate bugs, I get such welts when I get bit. I'm no stranger to hard work, though. I'm good with a hammer, level and plumb line. I am living with my father in Florida. I think he and I might build a shed this summer. We grow a lot of our own food and could use a nice place to store our tools and start our seedlings. I've started Morels in a shady area around a couple of tree stumps. We should have something in about 4 more years. We've also become bird nerds. We have blue birds, cardinals, black cap chickadees, tufted titmouse, a variety of humming birds, doves, sap suckers and woodpeckers. You're the inspiration for much of this, Martin. Thanks a bunch.
    Love,
    SR

Martin, have you thought of any design ideas for the new cabin? Not sure if you ever heard of Dick Proenneke? He lived a solitary life in Alaska, built his own cabin by himself, tremendous story...great design on his cabin. The are flying log rafters the provide an.overhang in the front of the cabin. Hope all is well....can't wait to see you start the new one. I am interested to see your idea come to life and how you attack it. Hope camper Jim is there to assist.

Martin, is your solar array large enough to keep a Laptop and cellphone fully charged in the winter? One other thing.....I have every intention of slipping a homemade pasty or two into your fridge some day, but I admit, every time I get a few ahead......I can't quit eat'in the dang things....then I'm all out of them again. 4:44 - What the heck are "green" eggs? I always thought that was just a Dr. Seuss thing... I do not like green eggs and ham, i do not like them, Sam I am. 5:10 - Martin, you need to get yourself a good cast iron pan! Cast Iron is the ONLY way to cook a steak! In my, somewhat less than humble opinion. 10:45 - drowning would be a horrible death. 17:04 - Nine solar panels are only producing 105 watts!? That would be just over 11.66 watts per panel! I didn't know they even made solar panels with that low of wattage!

    • @TheNorthwoodsman1
