    I have the Spyderco Salt 2. It cuts like a light sabre. I didn't know about the lifetime sharpening. Cheers

    FYI: Spyderco has a “budget” line of knifes called “byrd Knife by Spyderco”. Check out the Cara Cara Rescue (blunt tip, 4 inch blade, list price $48), the Meadowlark 2 Rescue (blunt tip, 3 inch blade, list price $46), or the Hawkbill byrd (very similar to the Tasman, curved 2.9 inch blade, list price $43). All 3 have serrated blades. These knifes are probably not using the same steel as the Salt line, but these knifes might be an inexpensive way to get into Spyderco. I own the Cara Cara, and I have been happy with it. Also, I really enjoy your videos! Thanks!

    Zack! Thanks for these videos. I've been watching as a beginner rafter. You've got a gift for explaining things.

    Spyderco Tasman Salt Very Nice Edc General Purpose Karambit Folder Blade.

    I love the Tasman 2. I usually carry a spyderco saver salt or my Tasman 2. Try the spyderco enuff for a fixed blade spyderco option. Made of the same H1 steel not overly big. Sheepsfoot style blade and is around the same price as the Tasman 2. I have also had luck carrying a Benchmade H2O dive knife. It’s got a blunted tip, dedicated rope cutter, half serrated half plain edge. I usually use it for kayaking but have taken it rafting before.

    I wasn't sure if I wanted the yellow handle or the black handle. I'm gonna go with the yellow handle, easier to see in case I ever accidentally drop it.

    Any long term issues with corrosion or rust? I need one that fits in the (magnetic) nifty folding knife pouch on the Kokatat Maximus. The combination of an outer and inner option is the way to go. I've got the Crewsaver Safety Hook mounted to the pfd, but I'd like to see how the Gill Harness Rescue Tool mounts.

      Nope no issues with corrosion or rust

    What do you think about knives like the NRS Captain Rescue that has a hooked end for cutting rope?

    • @GearGarageTV
      @GearGarageTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My guess is that the hooked ends don't cut the ropes we use for rafting well. I've never tried but that's my guess.

    Hey, Zach. Love the show. Thanks for all you do for the river community.
    Cost notwithstanding do you prefer the Spyderco Tasman Salt 2 over the Gerber E-Z Out Rescue? If I understood you correctly, the Spyderco cuts better. But is the sharp tip a deal killer?

    • @GearGarageTV
      @GearGarageTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like the Spderco better. I don't mind the sharp tip much and really appreciate how well it cuts.

    Skeletool RX Rescue is practically designed for rafting with alot of additional functionality both on river and in camp.
    Love the Tasman Salt but is only good at ripping/cutting/poking and does that so well could turn an emergency from pear shaped into fubar.

    • @GearGarageTV
      @GearGarageTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep the Skeletool RX is a good option

    If the pointed tip is a concern, Spyderco’s Atlantic Salt with a serrated blade might be your best option if you like everything else about the Tasman. The Atlantic has a drop-tip (almost like a sheep’s foot tip) to make puncture concerns more of an aversion. The Tasman’s blade helps fibrous materials sink into the blade, making it probably the best blade shape to cut robe or fibrous cordage, so you will lose the optimal design for that task in place for a blade shape that will be safer to handle around membranes and tissues.

    • @GearGarageTV
      @GearGarageTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep I have the Atlantic Salt too and after using both for a while think I prefer it over the Tasman.

    A guest on your show recommended The bear claw. Seems it would be the cheaper external option to choose and has the same curve you advocated. Would you agree?

    • @GearGarageTV
      @GearGarageTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bear claw is a cool knife and certainly adequate. I personally struggle cutting rope with it because the handle is a bit small and the knife is a bit short. It is also kind of known for falling out of its sheath. The other thing I don't like is when people attach it to their shoulder sometimes the blade is facing right at your throat which is unnerving for me but you may be fine with that.
      I've seen it tucked away in the Green Jacket behind the clamshell pocket and holds well there. I like the idea of a bear claw tucked away somewhere smart on the outside of a PFD combined with a good folding knife in a pocket.

    • @GearGarageTV
      @GearGarageTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also "cheaper" typically means lower quality steel. In general the more you spend on a knife, the better it's going to cut.

    • @mikeriley1073
      @mikeriley1073 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately the more I spend on a knife exponentially increases the odds I'll lose it
      That's why The Bench Made never sees the river😁. Thanks for taken the time....
