      Thanks a lot. You're absolutely right. Railfanning trips are always great fun as long as trains show up. Wish I had more time for such excursions...

    I haven't seen a B unit (let alone 2) in over 20 years. Last time was as a child in Berea, OH @ the Bagley Rd. crossing (Conrail at the time, now CSX)....

      It's amazing how you have two major rail companies in one city. So many rail yards. My question is were they able to move all the trains out of the area during the hurricane?

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In Atlanta, it's CSX and NS; in Macon, NS is the only class I railroad. Macon was not evacuated. I would rather think it was quite congested, because they possibly brought engines and rolling stock up from Jacksonville and and Savannah to keep them safe here. But this visit to Macon was almost a week before the hurricane passed by FL's and GA's coast line.

      Thanks! No, never. I don't trespass. The only thing I heard from railroad police was "be careful, trains are dangerous". Well, they should better tell this to careless car drivers who go around closed crossing gates.

    39:00-39:50 the squirrel was really thinking about it and trying to tempt it did he cross or not?

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, he actually did cross the track right in front of the train, but he did it skillfully and survived as far as I could see it.

      I wouldn't mind either especially watching the hump. there is downtown South Bend where the CN meets the NS on a cross over from their line to NS and back

      What's the daily average of trains there?

      25-50 but depends on the day

    • @mbmars01

      @mbmars01  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, this puts the bar at a very high level. I'm very happy you like the video this much.

    • @peter15871
      @peter15871 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      first the intro of all video's is spot on(just right),the camera must be top line one, use of panning and zooming exellent, radio chatter is a rare bonus. Makes the video come to life in my opinion(no bullshit)

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I really appreciate it. I perfectly understand your points because that's precisely how I think a train video should be created. There have been changes in the 2017 videos (I always need to change something, otherwise it would get boring for myself) but I hope you like them as well!

    Was NS ok with you being in the yard?

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, I would have loved to be in the yard. No, this is all filmed from the outside. It's just that the camera has a good zoom, allowing for getting this footage.

    I GUESS THEYDO HAVE SOME HEAVY WORK THERE IS ONE LOCOMOTIVE WITH TWO SLUGS. YOU KNOW WHAT A SLUG IS. I WONT TAKE IT FOR GRANTED THAT YOU DO. IT IS A FLAT CAR WITH A STEEL BOX ON TOP AND THIS FLAT CAR HAS FOUR TRACTION MOTORS ON IT. THEY JUST HUMP ONTO IT AND PLUG IT INTO THE LOCOMOTIVE AND CONNECT THE AIR AND THIS GIVES FOUR MORE TRACTION MOTORS. ONTO THE LOCOMOTIVE FOR SWITCHING PURPOSES IN THE YARD.

  • @willharris4429
    @willharris4429 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's the only thing I'm afraid on how far back Is considered trespassing

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the property near a track is apparently owned by the railroad, it's not the distance to the track that matters. Unfortunately, often signs or fences are lacking, so one sometimes simply doesn't know if one trespasses. Track and trackbed are obviously railroad property. Otherwise it's more a question of safety. The FRA recommends to stay at least 10 feet away from the track.

  • @CLELDKFKEJ

    What are those smaller units at 4:50? How do they work?

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess, you mean the slugs. They are basically locomotives without a cab to control them (they are controlled from the lead engine, which itself is often controlled remotely by the engineer). The purpose of slugs is to provide additional power in yards, since the trains have become longer and heavier and shoving around larger train sections cannot be performed by small yard engines anymore.
