Imported a 2019 Ducato motorhome new from Europe. As a camper, yeah it suits our need at only 7.1 meter. As a drive…we had to import because we wanted 180hp 6sp manual and everything local was 130/150hp jerkomatic. First job was chip it to 210hp and it’s bloody brilliant. More than able to hold its own on any hill, overtakes maybe not with ease, but you certainly don’t have to email the request in advance either. Now at 54,000km the only issue is from new the brake pad sensor always goes off😡. But it drives great, handles good for what it is (how many broken glasses do you really want), but will cruise day in day out at 110/120kph with ease and we average 9.5 in fuel…but it is 3.5 tonne and we drive it like we stole it admittedly.
Fiats in my youth were unreliable…this touch wood has been brilliant.
We do service it at 12,000 (don’t ask why…Partner has wierd ideas), 2.3 with twin EGR (oh god why!) and DPF…both of which are leaving the chat at the next service (before they give grief).

I have the 2016 3.0 litre 180hp Ducato with the 6-speed Comfortmatic automatic transmission. I converted it into a motorhome. It drives incredibly when I upgraded the front and rear suspension. It gets around 9.6 litres per 100ks so pretty happy with that. I also upgraded the wheels and tyres. It's the most comfortable vehicle I've driven. Just floats along the highway but it does have a crap turning circle. The only real issue I've had is the dreaded "GEAR UNAVILABLE" error, which can render the vehicle unusable in that it won't go into 1st gear and can leave you stuck up scrubby creek. Fiat and replacing the clutch and that's costing me a packet of $$ but hopefully this fixes that issue. I chose the Ducato because of it's 3.0 litre 180hp engine and it's a little wider than other vans, so you can build the bed to sleep sideways and that saves a LOT of room in the layout.

Engine light and limp mode 3 times, towed on tilt tray. Replaced transmission at 2,000km. Cruise control broken and repaired. Terrible service from Fiat, as you mention in the video, it's no wonder they are on notice.

What would I buy instead? I'd buy an economical hatchback, or plane/train/bus tickets, and I'd invest the difference, with the profits of which I'd spend on motel/hotel rooms with air conditioning/heating, long showers, a proper bed, fridge and someone to clean up after me... included in the price. FFS, I'm in my 50's. Sleeping in cars is for drunks and the homeless, these days. If you're a kid, and that's your thing, go for it. If you're an adult, stop wasting your kid's inheritance.

This. Don't know why it's almost standard practice to turn 50 and want to get into motorhoming. I stopped touring the country in vans as a roadie for bands by the time I was 26 because I was well and truly over it. Couldn't pay me a wage to travel and/or live in a van at this point, let alone spend eye watering money to do it.

You don't have a huge amount of choice if you want a motorhome here in New Zealand as most are imported from Europe and were generally based on the Ducato. The other options are Mercedes (expensive and is it more reliable?), VW (expensive again and again is it reliable?), Transit (cheaper but smaller and reliability....). I've had two Fiat Ducato and have never had a major problem but they are expensive to service and my current one has the comfortmatic gearbox which is so far fine...

My 2007 2.2 Ducato is running great. Only ever problem was the suction valve which I replaced with an ebay one. Big mistake. It soon had the same problem; occasional cutting out and rough idle. Put a genuine Denso suction valve in and perfect. The van design however is daft.

I see a surprising amount of these go past me at work with a tow car behind them.
I'm honestly quite surprised at the fuel consumption being as low as it is considering the weight some of them are hauling.
Only 2 vans I see more of on the roads and one other that comes close to the amount of these I see on the road. The 2 that beat it out are the VW Transporter and the Renault Master with the Mercedes Vito being around the same in amount I see around town.

I have a 2019 camper-van version , had it 4 years so far so good ( done 40k ) , was very nervous about reliability to begin with , but so far so good , yeah is a commercial vehicle so pretty rough and ready , but very economical for a 3.5 ton vehicle , tows my motorcycle trailer still averages 10.5 l /100 ... Allot of people Bag them , but there are heaps of Ducato Camper/ Motor homes around sure people have problems , however I don't believe that are bad as people make them out to be . Do your servicing , find a good workshop that knows how to service and fix them . The comfort-matic gearbox is pretty average , just learn how to use it and it more less works , just don't treat it like a normal auto and it will be fine.
