The Cult were much more influential than their record sales would indicate. They pretty much saved hard rock at a time when it had become very cheesy.
The singer is Ian Astbury, and yes you are right. He is an amazing frontman, but never seems to be in the discussion about the greatest frontmen of all time. In my opinion he is right up there with the likes of Mick Jagger, Steven Tyler, and Axl Rose to name just a few. He is a true entertainer. And Billy Duffy absolutely slays the guitar. I'm seeing them live at the end of July and I can't wait.

I love the Cult, but I don’t think you can compare him to A listers like Mick Jagger or Steven Tyler. But I’d agree with the Axl Rose comparison. Also agree that Billy Duffy is an awesome guitar player. Now he’s a musician that doesn’t get nearly enough accolades!

The only front man of my generation who came close to Jim Morrison of The Doors. He even performed with the surviving members of the band. I’ve seen The Cult many times over the years and they never disappoint. Ian and Billy are an incredible team. To me they transcended post punk and hair metal . They had their own sound and vibe.

He channels Morrison in almost everything. The hair, the crooning, the black leather pants. He’s even wearing the Skull hat that Morrison wore in Miami in ‘69.

Ian Astbury is in a rare club of front men who have it ALL. Him & Michael Hutchence have the voice, the looks, the moves & the stage charisma that just oozes out naturally & captivates. Elvis & Jim Morrison also had this rare stage charisma. The Cult is iconic & I'm so happy they have made a resurgence because Ian still has it!

They started out as a goth band called "Southern Death Cult", then they became "Death Cult", then just "The Cult". Ian Astbury is a tremendous vocalist. ":Love Removal Machine" is another great one from them.

Well, SDC was a different band that Ian was in which he appropriated part of the name from. What we know today as "The Cult" started when Billy joined with Ian for "Death Cult."
in the 80's we heard a ton of "POSER" bands these guys were not one of them. They had a great sound, tons of talent, and amazing energy.
Right on. I was a junior in high school when this dropped. This was everything rock was supposed to be that it wasn't at the time. The Cult is the uncut cocaina.

The Cult are a tight punchy Rock Band.
They have hair, though I wouldn't pigeon hole them as a Hair Band.
People that have a limited knowledge of music feel compelled to categorise everything.
For example, anything that was a ' little different or Left of Centre' in the late 70's/ early 80's was classified as NEW WAVE music.
Sometimes and quite often, a Band is just a Band.
In 1972 the VERTIGO RECORD LABEL had the good business sense to sign STATUS QUO to their stable along with BLACK SABBATH, therefore people tried to label QUO as HEAVY METAL.
STATUS QUO were and still are just a bloody great Rock Band. The Band's name is 55 years old now ( 1967 ) and they've lost a few members due to death or music differences.
Matt Sorum has had a cool Drumming career with THE CULT & GUNS n ROSES.
When THE CULT toured AUSTRALIA back in 2013, they played the full ELECTRIC album followed by other Classic Cult songs.
Toward the end of the gig, there was a palpable vibe running thru the crowd, this was because they hadn't played SUN KING yet.
They brought the house down and the crowd exploded when they closed the gig with SUN KING (Baby )

Ian Astbury is one of the greatest vocalists/performers of the 80’s-90’s and still rocking it today. Billy Duffy one of the best guitarists as well!

SSS was at the top of Cult album sales, but they were getting away from their core audience. Sonic Temple was a good album, but not as good as the three before it.

Don’t think I’m the only one who thought this band was going to be the biggest band in the world. Absolutely love them. Hard rocking, great singer, classic sound but with unique songs. They were kinda hair metal but not; kinda pre-grungy but not. Just hard driving rock n roll. Great song. Great reaction! 🔥🤙

They weren't hair metal, they were/are a hard rock/blues rock hybrid. I, too, thought they were destined to become much bigger, but this wound up being their peak. But, what a killer album, and I recall there being a LOT of great rock albums in the 1989/1990 period, before rock started to fade from the mainstream.
Exactly. Looking back in time now you can see them as a transition band.
They were post-AfD hard rock in the Gibson mode vs the super Strats of hair metal.
The Cult was ALWAYS an instant floor-filler at clubs. EVERY genre loved them- goths, club kids, metal-heads, etc.
They’re one of those bands you can only describe as rock. That’s it. This is an all time banger.
They started off as "The Southern Death Cult" as an indie band in the early 80's. Became "Death Cult" and later "The Cult". By the time that Fire Woman came out they were heading to a more rock based band, although they did Led Zep covers and stuff like born to be wild as an indie band. I saw them a few times in the mid 80's, what a band. Still love them today.

Ah yes, you’ve finally found The Cult again! This is a great 2nd pick. I was deployed in Honduras in the 90’s with the Army and did a volunteer radio show. The intro to this was the opening for every weekly show I did. Sometimes I let it run for the entire magnificent song.
I was introduced to the Cult in 91 in the duty hut in Kaneohe Bay, HI when I was a young marine.

Love Removal Machine is a must-listen from The Cult. Even though The Cult came from punk roots, you'll hear elements of AC/DC and Led Zeppelin in this banger.

Over several decades drummers and Bassist have come and gone. Most notably was Matt Sorum who left The Cult to join Guns and Roses
Jamie Stewart, the original Bassist. Can't forget him. His Bass tone playing style were integral to the sound of this band! Fender Jazz Bass!

I should’ve been into this band way more as a kid, given my age. I got to see Ian (Singer from The Cult) front The Doors of the 21st Century, which was the surviving members of The Doors and Ian, who made you feel like it was Jim on stage. All-time banger of a performance.
The Cult fused alternative (in their case British Goth) in the late 80's opening the door for 90's grunge and out of hair metal.. Not comparing just saying they Kings X. living Colour , Faith No More opened the record labels minds and many of the 90's bands give them major props. Follow up suggestion

"Love Removal Machine" would be another great song by The Cult. They always cut their own path. Among 80s bands, they were probably the least 80s. Like they were a decade too early. Ian Astury(vocal) and Bully Duffy (guitar) are an amazing 1-2 punch.
LRM is great. Earlier stuff is even better.
LOVE REMOVAL MACHINE is another classic by THE CULT but honestly their whole discography is worth a listen. Saw them live a couple of years ago and they still sound incredible after 40 years. And yes, Amber is correct. Their sound was just a bit different (in a good way) from their hair metal contemporaries.
You took the words right out of my mouth, I saw them live a few years ago as well and they sounded phenomenal! Ian still goes crazy with that tambourine and he can definitely still sing. I also suggest Love Removal Machine as a next reaction, y'all won't be disappointed!

I love The Cult. They do have a sound that was distinct from other bands in that era, at least in my opinion. If you liked how he sounded in the chorus of this song you should really check out Sweet Soul Sister. You'll love it.

The Cult are a huge band in Canada and Europe they’re still together and playing out. Ian Astbery is the singer and Billy Duffy is on guitar. Talk about a match made in heaven they know how to rock! Still one of the best live acts out there. Ian brings the charisma and sexy back to music with that great voice! Billy is the epitome of a guitar great his tone is impeccable and he serves every song so well master of the white falcon guitar! Go see them live it will blow you away!

These guys were a weird anomaly for me. And in the best possible way! I can only speak for Chicago and downstate illinois, but their songs were in every club. New Wave clubs country clubs heavy metal clubs punk clubs dance clubs, it didn't matter at some point one of their songs would come on and fill the dance floor, if it wasn't already full. They just seem to cross over anywhere. I still love them, glad you all are into it.

The first time I heard this I grinned at “Smokestack Lightnin’”, a nod to blues god and heavy metal godfather Howlin’ Wolf. (Listen to his songs and you’ll understand why many consider Led Zeppelin thieves.)

Holy Hannah, it's been a long time since you've reacted to this band (in fact, it's been exactly one year and one week)! I grew up listening to The Cult and their amazing lead singer, Ian Astbury. You did "She Sells Sanctuary", IMHO their signature hit, but this is a hell of a banger too. If I had to pick their next best song, it'd be "Edie (Ciao Baby)", which I played so loud it melted my speakers. "Sweet Soul Sister" and "Wild Hearted Son" are also incredible. Thanks for giving them another shot! If I can recommend another band with a similar vibe that I think you would love, it's Sisters of Mercy. Their song "More" is just incredible. And it's long past time you did a Smashing Pumpkins song ("1979" or "Today" are classics.)
I totally agree - go for Edie (Ciao Baby). I too have listened to that track so often and so loudly it not only melted my speakers but also my ear drums and the relationship with my neighbors! This was one time I went crazy for a song and had no idea who it was! In those days one couldn’t just play whatever. We had to wait for it to come around on the radio again! Finally, FOUR YEARS LATER, I got it! I had to pull over to make sure I heard the name right. Anyway, saw them live at the Warfield in San Francisco. The small theater venue was acoustically perfect for this band. The sound was so full that it surrounded everything. This song goes with me when I die for sure! Today is my 71st birthday and what a wonderful reaction video to watch! Thank you!
Long ago I heard Danzig - "Mother" on the radio. But didn't hear anything else from him cause most of my music listening was just radio based at that time and some pop cds. Later while driving heard this song "fire woman" but not sure if there was a DJ introduction of the band, don't think so. I had nothing to go by and my memory is garbage but my brain was tieing those two singers similar vocalizations together. But whatever year that was the internet did exist and I ended up taking forever to google the right combination of words to end up finding the cult. Ended up having to remember Danzig then google artists who sound like Danzig after realizing it wasn't him :P.
P.S. had the same issue when heard Chris Isaak on radio with Wicked Game, didnt get any info with it, then thought maybe it was Dwight Yoakam who I heard later singing thousand miles from nowhere. Had to search forever on the internet to find the right person with nothing to go on, ended up at roy orbison. :P I feel your pain. My memory is garbage and often you dont get a DJ introduction to a band name or song name before they dive into a song and then you never hear a song again.
Your reaction was fun. I’ve been a Cult fan for 30+ years, and yes Ian Astbury is the real deal. Also, one simply can’t be more of a rock star than Billy Duffy on guitar.

Yes, which is why he fronted the Doors for awhile...the remaining Doors member really loved him. He killed it with their music. He and Billy are still touring and Ian's voice is still amazing.

I got to see The Cult live in Oct 2019. They were doing a 30th anniversary tour of Sonic Temple which is the album this song is from. Basically they played their set as if they were on the Sonic Temple tour and it was awesome. Other great songs from this album, Edie(Ciao baby), Sun King, Sweet Soul Sister. Great songs from other albums, Wildflower, Lil' Devil, Love Removal Machine, Love, Here comes the rain, probably a few more I am forgetting.
The Cult had changed their style in the 80's and 90's with each new album, they started out as Goth, Post Punk, Alternative, Hard Rock, Indie and everything in between. They really cannot be classified, definitely NOT Hair Metal 🤘
A band I've loved since the Love album
I don't know what they call themselves, but The Cult is played as frequently as any of the standard bands on the XM radio Hair Metal channel. The channel doesn't have any groups outside the norm (for example, I've never heard Billy Idol on that channel), so fans consider The Cult hair metal.

This band takes me back to a time that just kicked arse. I was two years from marrying my future ex wife but we had so much fun listening to The Cult. although things did not work out, this band and the memories they were part of…no regrets!

These guys are just pure Raw high energy, rock and roll.
They got EVERYTHING in this video. There are a ton of call outs to music from the past as well as the moves. Jim Morrison lying on the ground singing angst. Check. The foot movement is a call out to James Brown and Mick Jagger. Lyrics of Smokestacks burning? Howling Wolf. Definitely not a hair band. The Cult carved their own niche and steadily evolved over time. I saw them in the eighties. Guess who opened for them? A unknown, at the time, Guns and Roses. How cool is that. This is the MOST UNDERRATED Band of the that time. They both ahead and behind the curve. If they had cone out in the late sixties or early seventies they would have been a household name. Awesome band.

When their early album “Love” came out it had an alternate vibe but then they put the pedal down and released “Electric” later followed by Sonic Temple” which this song is from. “Sun King” from this album is also a banger.
Billy Duffy basically changed from Peter Buck into Jimmy Page over the course of those albums, right in front of our eyes and ears. That dude made huge leaps and bounds in his playing album over album.

I was late to The Cult rabbit hole. My first experience with them was when VH1 (of all places) did a countdown of the 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs of All Time, and The Cult's Love Removal Machine made the list. I often listen to the Ozzy's Boneyard satellite channel and The Cult is played on there from time to time. This song and Love Removal Machine convinced me to pick up some of their albums. Great reaction and please more of The Cult!

I was working in a record store when Sonic Temple dropped and I bought a copy on cassette. After one listen from beginning to end, I immediately knew it was going to be a classic. Fire Woman is a solid track on an album that, in my opinion, doesn't have a single bad track on it.

The next song you HAVE to react to is “Edie (Ciao Baby).” This song is about Edie Sedgwick, a socialite who formed part of the artist Andy Warhol’s Factory scene in New York in the 60s. She was also featured in several of the films he made during that time. However she lived a troubled life that was filled with mental health issues and drug addiction. She died from an overdose in 1971. Ian Astbury, the lead singer, became interested in her while learning about the band the Velvet Underground, who Warhol managed in the late 60s.
Please please please check out this song. Billy Duffy’s guitar work in this song is jaw droppingly good and Ian’s vocals are so on point. You will not be disappointed. I promise! 💜✌🏼

I love the reaction. The Cult is great. You’re right about them being a little different from other Hair Bands. As a couple of people pointed out, they have Punk/ Indie roots. They were Played a lot in the dance club scene as well so yeah, a little different than a typical “Hair Band”. “Love Removal Machine”, “Lil Devil”, & “Peace Dog” are other good choices.

this is one of the "3 Ian's" of the roots of post-punk/gothic/darkwave, this being Ian Astbury, the other 2 being Ian Curtis of Joy Division & Ian McCulloch of Echo & the Bunnymen. all three being heavily influenced of course by Jim Morrison, the man whom the term "gothic music" was coined to describe his sound. 💯

I graduated from HS in 91, and I never thought of The Cult as a hair band...in my mind, they were in the category as Danzig. Whatever you call their music, I love it.
Wildflower and Edie Ciao Baby are two songs that are always on my internal juke box. I hope you get to check them out sometime.
I absolutely adore this song. When I first heard it, I thought it was Billy Idol but I quickly learned who The Cult was.
I've seen hundreds of bands live because I worked in the music and bar business for years. The Cult is definitely in my top 5 live performances. They are the ultimate experience.

I just went to see The Cult last month, live in London. They were fantastic. Ian Astbury's voice still great, and he got the crowd up and singing ('Rock n roll shows are not for sitting down'), and picked out an audience member who was paying more attention to eating his Nandos than watching the gig! He was and always has been badass and is a top singer/frontman in rock music. Billy Duffy the guitarist is also still excellent and is very cool. Always been a top band.

This brings me back. My quasi-unique story to share? I grew up in the city where Ian Astbury moved to as a kid and was aware of him as a performer early on. I was too young to be a contemporary myself, but my oldest sibling had mutual friends. We definitely knew who he was when the Cult toured in '89 or '90 (I think with Aerosmith? Maybe? Honestly, I wasn't old enough to drive, let alone have that beer in my hand, so most of my memories of that night were about staying under the radar of security, LOL). But my friends do remember me proclaiming (in that super earnest way you get when you're buzzed) that Astbury was great, but he'd really shine in a Doors cover band. And sure enough, a decade or so later, IA toured as lead on a Doors revival tour with some of the original members!
When this comes on the radio for 30+ years while I'm driving. I start air drumming, air guitar, singing. I can't believe I kept it on the road every time. I 😁🤘

The Cult has constantly reinvented themselves over their career, from goth/new wave-ish type rock (album "Love") to stripped down, AC/DC type rock (album "Electric") to the version you guys just reacted to which is more of a contemporary hard rock sound. In my opinion, they were great no matter what style their album was. I was fortunate enough to see them play a couple times. Once as the opener for Metallica in 1990 and once at Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis as a headliner. They were great both times, while the energy they exuded in the video is exactly what they bring in their live performances. I will always be a fan of the Cult. They stood out among the crowd in my youth as a band that gave their all. with one of the most talented and energetic singers of all time.
