I'm a computer science major and professional software engineer. I've been a DIY car repair person since the 90s and recently bought a XTOOL D7 bidirectional scanner. I'm learning tons watching these training videos and looking forward to learn more about this scan tool and how I can utilize it more effectively with an understanding of the ECM, DTCs and PIDs. I ran across your site on "The Trainer #67 - When Fuel Trims won't trim" while trying to diagnose a rough idle on a Ford Escape with no related DTCs, but a 10.5% LTFT. I realized I couldn't follow the video so I jumped back to "The Trainer #1" and worked my way through a lot of the videos I felt would be nice to know. Finally got back up to #61 and looking forward to learning this scan tool!
@@MotorAgeMagazine I've heard one person say that if you don't have the Check engine light on but trouble codes show up, that it is the ECM. I haven't heard that information from anyone else. You ever heard of it?
@@MotorAgeMagazine I'm looking into other videos about teaching a new ECM after installation. Lots of different opinions on turning the key on and off and then turning the key on for 11 minutes and repeat three times on the 94 GMC Sierra C3500 with a 7.4 engine. When I purchase this ECM, I don't want it to be a fuse for a problem that I have NOT found in the wiring. I appreciate your input. This is all new to me. I've had my 72 Chevy El Camino ever since February 15, 1975.
@@MotorAgeMagazine 1975 and have by myself installed two tear ends and three transmission. I've rebuilt the carburetor two times before I decided to get an Edelbrock, Street Preformer and electronic distributor. Love my 72 Chevy El Camino.
Great video. Thank you. I would like to second a previous comment- I often notice fellow technicians forget to ensure there is a load on a circuit prior to checking for a voltage drop. Excellent point to drive home.

I was always taught by major engine manufacturers ECM has 3 priorities 1 emissions 2 Fuel economy 3 performance In that order ECM s do many more things than just emissions Factory trained tec Cummins Detroit Diesel Catipiller Mercedes Benz Peterbilt Mack Freightliner

A computer does not think, it is programed with a series of loops that are designed to either go into the null and proceed to the next item on its list or if within parameters it will optimize with the command that it has mathematically come to the most optimal for where it equations has led it.I know we would all like to have them as a friend,but we must always remember that they are told what to do by a series of strokes on a keyboard,then looped into doing the same thing over and over. Good video though
Sir maybe it's better if you illustrate on a white board or paper. where the connection is what the voltmeter goes to and the measured voltage coz we can't see the reading in the meter
Your camera wasn’t showing half of your probing QUESTION: we never saw what to do if the reading revealed a bad ground whether power or signal. Was that what all those wires are, is grounds? Please explain… and THANK YOU❗️❗️
Around 27 minutes in I'm a bit confused because you said the voltage drop on the sensor return circuit should be lower than the voltage drop on the main power grounds ultimately I would expect them to be pretty much the same or the power ground voltage drop a tad bit lower ultimately everything has to get back to the battery so if they were the same I would think there's no voltage drop within the system of the computer from the sensor return going back through the main ground to the battery now in fact if the voltage drop was reading point .2 volts (.2)at the sensor return and the main power ground point zero six (.06) I would suspect a problem on the sensor return circuit Maybe I misunderstood you
Hy do you hawe a pdf of obd2 0-10 moduls and ecm and other systems so i could read maybe more in depth?is there a video in fixing most comon obd2 codes?thanks
I know just enough to be dangerous lol. I know your supposed to see 2.5 volts at idle one goes up a volt other down. disconnecting modules to eliminate a bad module pulling a system down. just want to see some good testing. good work man

@@peacepoet1947 No. But older OBD I vehicles were hard on ECMs and are more likely to have an issue than newer vehicles.

does it mean that ECU has power to energize the radiator fan relay even if the engine is off ?
Sorry for the late reply. On some models, yes - the ECM can turn the fans on even if the engine is off.
