How Colombians Spot Foreigners | Let's Talk About Expats in Colombia

  • How does a Colombian spot a foreigner?
Have you ever asked yourself how they found out about you being a foreigner? Is it that obvious?
In this video, we asked Ana our friend and partner. Ana was born and raised in Colombia. She helps foreigners relocating to Medellin for over 2 years now.
We asked her about her opinion, can she spot foreigners, and how does she do that?
The fun thing is a lot of foreigners coming here, no matter if Expats or tourists, they bring their usual clothes from back home with them. For them, it is normal to walk around like that.
For tourists, it's a vacation, so why should they dress up, that's at least what a lot of people think. Just by wearing those "beach type" clothes foreigners can be spotted.
Usually, Colombians tend to wear long pants even though it's hot outside, no matter if you are going to Santa Marta, Cartagena, Medellin or other warm to hot places, locals wear long pants no matter what.
Men wearing shorts or even walking around shirtless is something you will rarely find here.
Let's see what Ana has to say about the foreigners and how she as a local can spot them.
Don't hesitate to contact us with any Expat questions you might have. No matter if you've got questions about Medellin, Bogota, Santa Marta or Colombia in general. We would love to support you on your journey.

This side, outside tourist locations, Colombian women are beautiful, intelligent, and far better than western girls. If I did not get so much free candy I would marry one in a heartbeat.
Out and about I put on an old t-shirt and jeans, cheap no-brand sport shoes, an almost empty wallet, photocopy of my passport and visa, and my old mobile phone. I study in advance where I want to go and I walk at a good pace to my destination.

You spot a foreigner because they look different, dress different and mainly they speak a different language or they speak Spanish with a different accent. So you're not disrespectful at all Anna. Colombians average height is 1.70 cm or 5'7", unlike Americans and Europeans that range from 1.80 ( 6') and up. I also agree with your statement in regards to foreigners acting like they own the country because it's a third world country and they feel somehow superior to the locals. Best advice to any foreigner is to learn and embrace the culture, always be respectful to others and also be aware of your surroundings at all times, Colombia is full of nice and warm people but like anywhere they are a few bad apples that can ruin your experience. Lots of good advice for any tourist in any country really. Anyone who has traveled extensively already knows most of these things, but for some reason Americans (and I am one born and raised) tend to be more arrogant and therefore oblivious to the things they do that immediately mark them as Americans. I once overheard an American woman in a high end Italian restaurant in Milan tell her friends in a Texas drawl: "I like Italy, but they do not know how to cook pasta here -- it's always under-cooked." SMFH What she did not notice was that the waiter overheard and understood her perfectly (she thought he did not). I shudder to think what happened to the rest of her courses that evening LOL. I did notice their entire table had trouble getting anything like another glass of wine from that point forward. Only an American would go to Italy and tell them how to cook pasta. 🤣🤣🤣

How's that arrogant? If it was undercooked, it was undercooked. To be fair, from MY personal experiences foreign food more often than not is better abroad than it is in the home country. I've heard many people complain about Italian food. It has nothing to do with arrogance, but simply a matter of growing up with a different version of the food.

@@briantravelman As you may or may not know, Italians prepare their pasta "al dente" -- which is to say that it needs to have a level of firmness to it and not just be limp and mushy. You (and anyone else) are fully reasonable to say, "I don't LIKE it like that -- it's too hard. I want it to be soft and mushy." Totally fair -- you have a personal preference that is different from theirs, and as you say -- you grew up with a different version. However, when you go to the Italian chef and tell him: "Hey -- you're cooking this wrong," then you're an arrogant ass. Said chef is cooking a dish native to his culture (not yours) and has also had years of training and experience doing so professionally. What are you qualifications to tell him he's doing it wrong? You've eaten it before? Somewhere in Texas or something? This sort of nonsense -- where individuals think that their personal, untrained opinion is completely equal to that of someone who has spent years studying something and working in that field -- is one of the biggest problems in America today. We see it all the time and it has been the centerpiece of COVID-19 stupidity. "I know more about viruses than someone who went to school for 7 years to study medicine and followed that up with 20 years of real experience working on them." Thinking that you know more about any subject than the people who have dedicated their life to that subject is "arrogance." Or alternately, you can just call it stupidity.

I appreciate her straightforwardness. I agree with her for the most part, though I'll never understand why people stress so much about how I'm dressed. Unless it violates local cultural practices, I wear what's comfortable for me. If they wanna laugh at me, than it is THEY who are close minded. And they're acting like there aren't any LOCAL people who don't conform to the local fashion trends. And that goes for ALL countries.
I also read often that a lot of Colombians don't like Americans because of historic and political stuff.

You can see that you still do not know the mentality of the common Colombian, you can not ask for pears to the elm, foreigners come to Colombia and automatically want everyone to speak to them in English, you go to a popular neighborhood or a pueblo where a foreigner has never been and you want people to react as if they have known you all your life, you go to a town more than 2900 meters above sea level where people dress a certain way and you arrive in a Hawaiian shirt and sandals and want no one to see you and laugh at you.
I have always admired in Americans the virtue of making fun of themselves.

It was also hilarious on how people would try to raise prices while talking right in front of me at the market and shocked when I communicate in Spanish...
