The reason KPOP is so popular is cuz the artists go through really hard training, starting at around 14- 16 years old and train 16 hours a day in dance, vocals, acting, modeling, rapping, ect. They also do all of it live, no matter how intense the dance is, they still sing and dance at the same time. They train years to debut. When they debut, they train even harder and have multiple comebacks(new music releases and/ or tours) every year.

I understand your point of view completely. Most of Kpop has been very innocent buttercream cookie mold for sure, that's the image that they promote for the majority of groups out there. And Kpop has always been about bright and in your face visual. However the difference for Blackpink lies in their songwriter. Teddy park is a korean-american rapper/producer, so he put his influence on their songs and it appeals very much to the current trend. EDM/Rap/techno... it's what's now and their producer hit the nail right on the head. Some of their stuff will obviously stay on the pop side of the spectrum but their success on an international scale comes mostly from their most popular songs due to the fire beat. Blackpink has been one of those breakout group because they rode in on the trend HARD and their lyrics are also very much about female empowerment. If you turn on captions, you'll understand the imagery of the scene in relation to the lyrics. It's very much "I look nice and cute, but if you do me wrong i'm gonna kill this quick and laugh about it"

I always comment before I watch. And then after, my bad. Check out Kill This Love & Boombayah. Also, you are right about putting your friends on this and seeing there faces. I'm 35 and I've been a fan of BP for 3 months. I've definitely been getting looks but I can't fight the fact that these songs sound so different then North American pop. The beats and raps are FIRE. I really appreciate your honest opinion, Blackpink is very western GP (general public, a term used to describe those that don't listen to Kpop normally) friendly, It is their charm to pull of that vibe they have, truly talented women.
and thumbs up for giving a shoutout to their producer, he is Teddy Park a legend in Kpop, been making hit songs since 1998 when he was part of a rap crew in Korea, he was even approached by interscope to be one of their producers way back when, but decided to stay in Korea and work, and with Blackpink he surely hit gold, since the women match his production talents with their performance skills, on an international scale (plus KOMCA the Korean music rights organisation and the label they are in pay a lot more to production and writing).
anyways try looking up some of the older songs he worked on for more of that vibe
2NE1 with "i am the best"
BIGBANG with "Bang bang bang"
or maybe even his own group back in the days 1TYM with "HOT" (fair warning it is from 2003 so it is from another age, but the beat and the raps be fire)
or keep checking out Blackpink they don't have a single disappointment in the entire discography.

I understand your point of view completely. Most of Kpop has been very innocent buttercream cookie mold for sure, that's the image that they promote for the majority of groups out there. And Kpop has always been about bright and in your face visual. However the difference for Blackpink lies in their songwriter. Teddy park is a korean-american rapper/producer, so he put his influence on their songs and it appeals very much to the current trend. EDM/Rap/techno... it's what's now and their producer hit the nail right on the head. Some of their stuff will obviously stay on the pop side of the spectrum but their success on an international scale comes mostly from their most popular songs due to the fire beat. Blackpink has been one of those breakout group because they rode in on the trend HARD and their lyrics are also very much about female empowerment. If you turn on captions, you'll understand the imagery of the scene in relation to the lyrics. It's very much "I look nice and cute, but if you do me wrong i'm gonna kill this quick and laugh about it"
The moment you turn on that subtitles, you'll understand why it got 1.2 billion views
