TGC recommended this channel. I reload for .45ACP and .223Rem already, but I don't know everything and always eager to learn so here I am man! teach me something!
This is a great idea for budget project. I have been thinking about doing something with an affordable .223 bolt action rifle for my next rifle project so will follow this series.
Came across your channel by chance Gavin and now an avid watcher. My local gun shop in Adelaide sells the Compass TC for $760AUS. That's pretty much on par with you guys at $600US. Well produced videos by the way. Paul, Adelaide, South Australia
I'm super excited to see where you go with this as I have a T/C Compass in .223 and a couple of Lee presses. I'm using my Lee Challenger for my rifle loads as I prefer batch loading in .223 and 6.5 Creedmoor. And I agree the rifle is amazingly accurate and not just for it's price. So carry on... I'll be watching.
New subscriber here, sent over from The Gun Collective. I am stoked for this .223 reloading series as that's what I'm working on reloading myself. That Thompson looks B. A. Thanks for the quality content.
I have been wanting to get a bolt gun using an existing caliber in my inventory. I have also been wanting to start reloading. Looking forward to the next video in this series. Loved the series on the Ruger Precision rifle.
Excellent, looking forward to this series. I just purchased a Howa 1500 Varminter and am putting it in a Boyds AT ONE stock. I also just started reloading with the lee challanger :) Thumbs up from Australia!!!
Not a bad setup mate scope looks a tad bit high i just put my self a thompson centre ventre weather sheild in 223 on layby with a 6-24x44 nikko stirling scope cant wait to see how it turns out in the next few months when i pick it up 😃
Nice video and nice set up. Only thing to knit pick is the height of those rings but for 600 bucks in all that gear, job well done. And done well with those groups!
Speaking of crimping? Do you have a video that explains crimping in more depth? When to crimp? When not to crimp? When to roll crimp vs taper crimp? I hand load the 35 Remington and I do crimp for these reasons. The 200grain Hornady bullet has a canaleur and the nature of the tubular magazine requires( maybe doesn’t REQUIRE) that I do crimp to try and avoid the spring pressure or the recoil forces from seating the bullets any deeper for consistent results. Then I reload for .270 win. I do not crimp right now, regardless of whether or not the bullet I use has a canaleur. You’ve inspired me to try this project and the compass looks like a great little rifle. But please, if you have the time (I know you’re a busy guy) send me to one of your videos or reading material. I want to explore this in depth. I load .35 Rem, .270 win and 9mm Luger and have been doing so for only 3 years. Thank you.
Hi Gavin. Which caliber for bench rest. And do you like this, savage or ruger. Seems like good buy with vortex scope.Thank you for the video merry Christmas to you and yours.
TheGunCollective: I found your channel from TGC. Glad I did I just started reloading and it's been hit and a-lot of miss. So I nuked some popcorn and started my education. Thanks Sir . wrote the last comment on wrong vid.....
Just "soft seat" as many match shooters like me do. The bullet is loaded a bit long, but is seated to the exact same spec by the lands every time you lock the bolt. Now...it only works on pre-fired(in that rifle) brass. Single feed rounds only...
Started binge watching since TCG mentioned you, really good stuff! Good write up of the reloading press's, which single and progressive are you most impressed with so far?
Nice. Wondering why you chose not to do a break in of the rifle (ie fire once, clean, repeat then 5 shots clean, etc)? There are different thoughts on this topic so not dissing you for not, just looking into your thoughts for the video series. Thanks for your series. Always something to learn.
I chose to keep things simple: Clean the chamber and bore real good, then shoot 50 shots, then clean it really good again. Everyone has a different technique, but if you cover the basic bases, I think you'll be all good!
I have been thinking about picking one of these up. I have been trying to decide between the .223 and .308 which one do you prefer shooting over the other and why?
Most likely shooting targets at the range. Since you had both, I wondered which you like better at the range. Any accuracy differences? You used hand loads on this video, but did you do the same on your 308 video?
mab1579 Accuracy will be a tossup, depending on rifle and ammo used. If you want to target shoot out to 400-500 yards, then .223, if you want to shoot further, get a .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor.
Nice little set up. Still can't believe how cheap that stuff is in the state's if that was over here in New Zealand it would be over $1000 for the rifle alone haha. Looks to be a real nice shooter looking forward to seeing how your reloads turn out. Great videos by the way I enjoy watching them and I've taken some of your advice on board in my new reloading hobby. 😉
Its not any cheaper here, the numbers are just smaller. Y'all frequently are paid more dollars per hour, aren't you? Isn't your minimum wage there like $13 or something?
David Coiner your probably right mate. Im just assuming as I have no idea what you guys get hourly rate wise. Yes we are around 17hr minimum wage. I think we are about 80c to your dollar. I'd love to check out your guys stores like cableas and bass pro. Even brownells. Aaaah all I can do is drool at them from afar haha.
Glad to help promote the hobby :) I loaded those to spec- usually that's generous on "to-lands" distance. But - love the fact that this rifle has a short freebore!!!
Gavin where are you coming by the T/C Compass? I was hoping to find one in 6.5 Creedmoor. I looked in the three largest and most popular gun counters between Olympia and Tacoma and found only one .308 in stock and was told by all them they can no longer get the Compass. One told me the Compass was recalled and it was last September. Since then T/C introduced the Creedmoor. So what gives? Craig
I have that same scope and despite the fact that it is cheap and from Walmart, it works well. I have it on an old 30-06 that was given to me. I've been looking at bolt .223's and never considered a TC. Thanks... and BTW nice t-shirt! Do you have any more in Medium?
was looking to do this setup.. but where i buy dont have .223 (out of stock).. so .243 it is which is better for hogs. that centerpoint bleh.. id stay with my Bushnell same magnification CF500 IR that is holding perfect zero on a NP2 air rifle 1000+ shots
.hey idol it is posible to order here in philipines..tru shipping.how much it iwill spent....and it there will be no problem in custom..although have complete legal documents..i really like to have 1..i own a 22lr marlin980s i love hunting dude...a complete set..
the one I got came out as a POS..horrible shot groups at 50yds ! larger than 1 1/2 spread with factory ammo...I tried everything, still the same grouping .. waste of $$
I'd base it on how often you would want to shoot it. If you shoot targets I'd go with 223, but if you want this to hunt with it then 308. I have one chambered in 300 Weatherby I hunt with my grandfather passed down to me and it is by far my favorite gun I own
Boyd's Gunstocks just released SA and LA gunstock designs for the Compass. Now you have the option to replace the original gunstock with something a bit better/nicer. Can never get enough reloading videos. Great teaching moment
Thanks Jamie! Always something new/different to talk about, I'll never be "done" :)
This is a great idea for budget project. I have been thinking about doing something with an affordable .223 bolt action rifle for my next rifle project so will follow this series.
Stickfighter Good deal! I should have gotten a rifle like this long ago :)
Got the same gun in 5.56, and the exact same scope. Got it at walmart for around $40. Then put a nice bipod on it
Came across your channel by chance Gavin and now an avid watcher. My local gun shop in Adelaide sells the Compass TC for $760AUS. That's pretty much on par with you guys at $600US. Well produced videos by the way. Paul, Adelaide, South Australia

Paul Ayres I bought 7 of these rifles last year. Paid $200 (after the rebate) for each.

Really like the mixture of shooting and reloading. Looking forward to the rest.
Thanks man!!! Lots more coming...
Would definitely choose this over the Ruger American and Savage Axis. Adjustable trigger and threatened barrel from the factory! I'm sold.
I subscribed.
I’m thinking about getting the T/C Compass 223 for coyotes, whistle pigs, and just plinking.
New subscriber here, sent over from The Gun Collective. I am stoked for this .223 reloading series as that's what I'm working on reloading myself. That Thompson looks B. A. Thanks for the quality content.
laylownismo welcome, and I'm excited to be featured as guntuber of the week on TGC :)
gavintoobe you earned it. Congratulations!
I am looking forward to this series.
It's going to be fun! (I'm having a blast so far)
I just bought mine in 6.5 creedmoor it looks really good
I have been wanting to get a bolt gun using an existing caliber in my inventory. I have also been wanting to start reloading. Looking forward to the next video in this series. Loved the series on the Ruger Precision rifle.
Thanks Brian- a bolt gun is a must have! Glad to have you along for the ride!
Excellent, looking forward to this series. I just purchased a Howa 1500 Varminter and am putting it in a Boyds AT ONE stock. I also just started reloading with the lee challanger :) Thumbs up from Australia!!!
Hey- thanks, and glad to hear you're going to reload for that awesome rifle! What chambering did you select?
.223, that's why this series very much interests me.
Looking forward to this series. I'm really interested in the scope and may have to go ahead and get one.
Looking forward. I reload 6.5 creedmoor and 223, using Lee dies, so a great opportunity to possible discover something to add to my routine.
Awesome- good combo (.223 and 6.5 Creedmoor)!

Awesome! I bought a compass in 300 win mag for long range shooting
RAD- do you have a big brake on that bad boy? I haven't shown belted magnums yet, but they're on my list.
gavintoobe yes I do, the SilencerCo for quick attaching a suppressor
Btw it's 1:10 twist on the 300
Sweet!

TGC sent me!! Keep up the good work!
Thannks dude!
Should I buy a 6.5 Creedmoor or 223 for a tc compass. I plan on target/ longe range shooting and coyote hunting
Both....i did. Both are amazing for the price
Great vid. First time watcher. Recommended from TGC.
Started binge watching since TCG mentioned you, really good stuff! Good write up of the reloading press's, which single and progressive are you most impressed with so far?
Gavin here's a well known 1/2 moa load. Hornady 75 grain hpbt Varget 24.5 grns seated 2.250 oal.
Thanks for the load suggestion! I'm trying that load today with Nosler 77 grain competition bullets, seems to do well!
Nice. Wondering why you chose not to do a break in of the rifle (ie fire once, clean, repeat then 5 shots clean, etc)? There are different thoughts on this topic so not dissing you for not, just looking into your thoughts for the video series. Thanks for your series. Always something to learn.

If I keep watching your channel, I'm going to need a bigger gun safe. ;)
I have been thinking about picking one of these up. I have been trying to decide between the .223 and .308 which one do you prefer shooting over the other and why?
imo if you want to push out beyond 500 yards or hunt, go with the 308. Under then 223
If you want long range, I would skip the 308 and go for something like 6.5 Creedmoor. :)
Whoops, just realised you did the whole project for $600US. The rifle must be really cheap then compared to our price!
Yes, you can get the rifle for as little as $200. US on a great sale...
If you had a choice between the 223 and the 308, which would you pick?
Totally depends on what you're doing- what do you plan to use the rifle for?
Most likely shooting targets at the range. Since you had both, I wondered which you like better at the range. Any accuracy differences? You used hand loads on this video, but did you do the same on your 308 video?

Love your videos! Got me into reloading. Just curious why you didn't check the headspace? Would have identified the proper bullet length.
Glad to help promote the hobby :) I loaded those to spec- usually that's generous on "to-lands" distance. But - love the fact that this rifle has a short freebore!!!

Craig- not sure- I'm working directly with TC! I'll let you know if I hear anything from them...
Looking forward to future videos. :-)
Can't beat that with a stick, having fun on the cheap. =)
Yes, it's like driving my farm truck- lots of fun and it didn't cost me hardly anything. :)
What scope are you using?
i wonder how many shot does it takes for the barrel on this rifle to start heating up?
It does pretty well with heat. You can shoot 20 shots in a short timeframe and be just fine :)
@@Ultimatereloader wow that is awesome
Gavin what brand cleaning rod did you use?
james desilva looks like a boretech cleaning rod, but could be a knockoff also.
james desilva Tipton carbon fiber...

Jon- yeah, the scope is surprising. Yes, the TC is great, and I do plan on selling T-Shirts, this was one from the batch I made for TriggrCon :)
You can now order them here! Hot off the press! You can order them here: ultimatereloader.com/store/ Thanks for your support!
You need to get the Hornady lock-n-load straight o.a.l gauge
gunman9090 I've been using it for years in fact you might see it come out in this video series!
I just got the 30-06 on clearance for $223 at dicks sporting goods, not bad at all thats a deal
What is the twist rate on the 223 t/c?

Sweet !
great video! I subbed!
what is the barrel twist?
rdsii64 it's in the write-up (link at top of video description) 1:9"
I bought a Ruger Ranch Rifle in 5.56 for $310 and it shoots half MOA groups out to 500yds. It's another option.
Amazing isn't it?
Just wonder if this rifle chambered in .223 would safely fire 556 Nato??
It would have to be chambered as 556 in order to shoot both. The barrel is stamped 5.56 nato/223rem.
Antoua B they actually make this rifle in a 556/223 you can purchase one at sportsmans outdoor superstore on line.
Yes it does i own one and itis chambered in 556
They have a few models. One in 223 Remington and one in 223/556 NATO . Go with what is stamped on your barrel only. Safety is key buddy.
Nice vídeo cool..
Kenneth Semidey Thanks!
Does anyone knows where to get an aftermaket stock for this rifle. I own one but dont like the stock
I'll look around! :)
gavintoobe thanx i appriciate 😉
Did you ever find anything? I have the compass in 7mm would love to replace the stock but I haven’t been able to find one
scotty gordy nope ive kept looking but nl luck
Boyds. I'm getting one soon.

.223 and 5.56.
1/9 twist seems kinda stupid for a bolt gun
Jacob Deem for an affordable bolt gun that's likely the best you're going to find
I was looking at your serial number early in the video. You can hardly read it. On mine the numbers stand up several thousands of an inch. This is what I am fighting Thompson Center about. THEY ARE NOT COMPLIANT TO ATF MARKING RULES. The rules state clearly. The numbers are to be a minimum of 1/16 tall and to be a MINIMUM depth of .003. So why did T/C screw this up so badly? There should be a recall of all these non compliant rifle. I mean do you want a gun in your house that is not ATF compliant? Holly shit. What went wrong here?
This rifle is a 5.56 Nato chambering. Not a true 223.
Apparently it's not making any difference to the .223's accuracy though since he's still able to get such insanely tight groups with it. I almost wonder if the chamber is actually .223 Wylde but instead Thompson Center just calls it .223/5.56
