- Adrien Agreste sat on his bed, staring at the ceiling of his luxurious room. The world outside the tall windows was bustling, but inside, all he could feel was emptiness. It was ironic, he thought, how someone so adored by millions could feel so alone.
The reason for his solitude was simple: love. Or rather, the lack of it. Not that Adrien didn't have people who loved him. There was his father, in his distant, cold way. There was his bodyguard, silent but loyal. And then there was Marinette.
Marinette Dupain-Cheng was different. She wasn't like the fans who screamed his name or the friends who surrounded him at school. Marinette was genuine. She was kind, talented, and always there for him, even when he didn't deserve it. But despite all of that, Adrien couldn't bring himself to return her feelings.
Love terrified him.
He had seen what love did to people. His mother had loved him, loved his father, and look where that had gotten her. Disappeared, leaving a hole in his heart that nothing could fill. His father had loved her too, and now he was a shell of the man he used to be, obsessed with bringing her back, no matter the cost.
Love was dangerous. It made people do reckless things, lose themselves, forget who they were. Adrien didn't want that. He couldn't afford it.
But Marinette… Marinette was persistent. She wore her heart on her sleeve, and it made him ache to see how much she cared. Every smile, every kind word, every awkward stumble she made around him was a reminder of the love he couldn't accept.
One day, Marinette finally gathered the courage to confess, her face a mix of determination and fear. Adrien could see how much it took for her to stand there, vulnerable, and offer him her heart. He knew what she wanted to hear, what she needed to hear. But the words that left his mouth were different.
"I can't, Marinette," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I can't love you."
Marinette's face fell, the hope in her eyes dimming like a candle in the wind. "Why?" she asked, her voice trembling. "Is it something I did?"
"No," Adrien replied quickly, shaking his head. "It's not you. It's me. I don't… I can't love anyone."
The silence that followed was heavy, suffocating. Marinette stood there, staring at him as if she was trying to understand, trying to find something in his eyes that would make sense of the pain she felt.
"I hate love," Adrien finally admitted, his voice cracking. "It only brings pain. I don't want to hurt you, Marinette. You deserve someone who can love you without fear, without holding back."
Marinette blinked back tears, nodding slowly. "I understand," she whispered, though Adrien could see the heartbreak in her eyes.
As she walked away, Adrien felt a pang of regret, a small voice in the back of his mind telling him he had made a mistake. But he silenced it quickly, reminding himself that he was protecting her, protecting both of them.
He watched her leave, his heart heavy with the weight of his decision. "I hate love," he repeated to himself, trying to convince himself it was true.
But deep down, Adrien knew he was lying.
