Chorus with high gain is my ABSOLUTE favorite. Iron Maiden Somewhere In Time is the absolute best sound an album ever had, and that thing oozes with chorus. Same for You Got Another Thing Comin' by Judas Priest. Or the Turbo Lover Solo, what an amazing sound. There are dozens of stellar tones I could list which have chorus on high-gain tones.
Chorus / detune is great with distortion for just this reason. I'm really curious about the chorus in the ToneX and if it can still my hunger for these types of tones.
You've Got Another Thing Comin' is a great tune, but sadly an example of too much chorus making things sound unnatural and washed out - especially considering that KK and Glenn were probably using treble boosters at the time the tune was recorded. Just a bit too much. Even live recently, still too much on Glenn's sound. Richie, however, sounds great. Not exactly sure if he's got chorus running.
Everyone needs to remember all this stuff is about personal preference. If you hate chorus….you hate chorus. There is no right or wrong and telling other players what sounds “good” and what doesn’t does nothing but create these ridiculous “camps” of players that all begin to sound exactly the same. Metal music is particular cultish in its adherence to convention. Providing tips on how to use effects like chorus to achieve a certain sound if they WANT it is the value here and why I like this channel. Keep up the good work!! 🤘🤘
Yeah the 80's hair metal guys used them a lot to get a really lush tone. I saw an 80's cover band use this setup with jcm800 and it sounded so cool. Adds a certain coloration. If you're getting a washy sound, you're doing it wrong. Apparently the 80s/90s guys used a Electro-Harmonix CE-2 or Boss CE-1
I love chorus (or modulation in general) with high gain...I grew up on it with Korn, Orgy, Fear Factory, A Perfect Circle, etc. When you listen to those bands you'd be hard-pressed to ever call those sounds "dated". They still hold up 25 years later. Maybe the old 80s way of using chorus on high-gains amps may not have stood the test of time, but the Nu-Metal genre sure as hell brought a LOT of effects that fell by the wayside back to life. So application and context is the most important thing. Maybe if you're in a blues band, a chorus pedal might not be the best thing, but I bet there's some dude out there (hopefully) bucking the trend, doing something different and really making good use of it.
the corona and the julia sound awesome! also your channel is convincing me that I need a mesa 2x12 for my revv, especially after dan said on that one livestream that the amps are voiced with the mesa 2x12 it makes so much sense why it sounds like a perfect combo
You nailed it. A little goes a long way. I add even less chorus, just enough to fatten up the chunk so to speak, especially after boosting a high gain tone.
Had to subscribe to your channel considering how gracefully and constructively you handled my comment. This is a great video explaining how chorus can be used to enhance but not take over a high gain tone. As you mentioned, it was over-used in the 80's. I believe the effect that the favorite was the Roland Dimension D rack unit. I'm also fairly certain it's why Bob Bradshaw had to set up the center dry cabinets in many of the rigs he made for people so that the sound would have the immediacy and punch that was lost due to the effects. This leads me to another possible way to set up the downstream digital - with a parallel effect loop, which is what the GigRig Wetter Box is meant for. All in all, you've given me some food for thought as to how to preserve the high gain tone - but it has to be done sparingly as you mentioned. Clean tones - lay it on, dirty - easy on the mustard please.
Great hearing from you!! I really appreciate both this comment, and your comment that inspired my video. Welcome to the TW community. Let me know what you come up with regarding chorus settings that work for you. Again, thanks so much for commenting
Just when I think i don't have a certain effect, someone proves to me it can be effective. I used chorus on a pop, Hip-hop kind of track on my drum bus, and that's what got me the job.
I use a Boss CE5 on all my rhythm guitars... very subtle use but it makes a huge difference, it gives the tone depth, character and fattens everything up... also it makes your tone sound like your guitars are all quad tracked without actually having to quad track anything.
chorus is amazing with high gain, can work before or after preamp depending on what you're doing... washed out melodic mess can be quite awesome as well, in context. definitely a personal taste thing of course as with everything in gear/music
The best “chorus” on high gain for me is a static detune. I usually go for flange for high gain modulation. Even a bit of front end phase on a solo like Jake E Lee.
I prefer a more subtle flanger for both clean and dirty. The walrus audio polychrome. With rate at 9 o’clock or just above. Depth at 10 o’clock. Lag at 10 o’clock and Mix at 10 o’clock
Eddie used chorus but in moderation. I have a CE-2 clone by Valeton, and the BOSS CH-1, Im actually thinking about getting the EVH Chorus since they say its very mild. I also don't follow trends, I do as I like and like what I like.
I typically put mods in the loop, but if you want to get rid of the "sheen" of chorus over high gain then just put it in front of the amp. I keep two mods on my board. One in front and one in the loop so I can choose where I want it for that part.
Pretty simple: go wet / dry when looking to use chorus with distortion (i.e. run chorus in parallel so that it doesn't directly affect the dry distortion tone).
Hey my friend, do you have tips for chorus with the Kemper? When I first got my Kemper, you were my "go-to" guy to learn how to use it and dial in killer tones.
I don't know, I think Zakk Wylde has a massive, fantastic tone and he uses Chorus quite a bit, Paul Gilbert still uses it. I've been using a MXR stereo chorus for 20 years , I just dialed it a little on the mild side, enough to hear it , but not overwhelming. The great EVH used it quite a bit as well. Just my 2 cents anyway for what it's worth lol.
The evh chorus is the best i ever used with distorted sounds because its more of a still chorus and a waving type, but i hate the damn input and output crap they out on it...but im gonna have to rethink my chain now if i wanna use the stereo delay that's coming to the tonex.. 1 input on the evh made it less versatile.
Can you do a signal chain video pertaining to all your effects, cause I know you’ve got the line 6 effects module and other additional pedals that be cool out there for all of us. They are trying to figure that out. I know I’d watch it.
@@TONEWARSgearshow yeah a lot of people, including myself are just confused about how to set up a proper signal chain. You know what pedal goes. What how to do this what delay to use? it works best in stereo. It widens the stereo field a lot, works well with delay and reverb. if chorus is to much try detune works great and is known as still chorus its chorus with out the movement. lots of great pedals for this eventide makes a couple good ones. all of that sounds much better than the sounds on here.
We can take Jarrod seriously when he actually employs animals that can Hear. Human Hearing is not good enough at this point. Until Jarrod uses the Greater Wax Moth to determine "chorus usage" can we take him seriously? Or how about the Beluga whale? Best Hearing in the water. Jarrod wants us to trust Human hearing when he could take his videos to the next level and use the best set(s) of ears on the planet to prove his point. Until Jarrod tests his A/B stuff with the Greater Wax Moth or a Beluga Whale this video is really just junk science. When the Greater Wax Moth identifies the "sheen" on top of the tone then I can take him seriously.
I’ll be hundred percent direct and rear with you dude. Each one of those pedals you are using in this video are junk. They really are. They don’t sound that good as chorus. Petals. Go back and get the real MXR chorus pedal or the chorus pedals that’s what Zack Wilde usedto chorus petals at the same time we did not get a washing sound. We got great sounds but you guys who were playing today don’t know how to use chorus like we did back in the 80s. We didn’t get crappy sound.

Death used chorus on high gain amps, one of my favorite tones

I think the rhythm tone on Ozzys "No More Tears" is a good example of a chorus + metal rhythm tone. Loved the vid, man!
I think some chorus and delay on a high gain lead tone for single note work is the best thing ever.
I love chorus (or modulation in general) with high gain...I grew up on it with Korn, Orgy, Fear Factory, A Perfect Circle, etc. When you listen to those bands you'd be hard-pressed to ever call those sounds "dated". My Julia pedal is being delivered tomorrow. Great timing on your video Jarrod . Always enjoy your content . Rock on 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Congratulations. It's such a great pedal. Wait until you hear it on your cleans. It's so Lush and beautiful.
@@TONEWARSgearshowyou are correct , that Julia is the best chorus pedal ive played . Thanks for that recommendation.

The Yammadog SPX90 sounded great in the 80s added some great modulation.
Chorus and high gain are awesome! Best example of this is Type O Negetive💚🖤
Ty Tabor's KingsX uses chorus with high gain and it always sounds great.
Yes!

Great demo, as always. Very informative.
Thank you!
Was just thinking about this subject today 😮🤙
I play everything with chorus lol. I absolutely love it. The dod fx65 is my fav.
And i use it in stereo with 2 of the same amps. Idk why everyone doesn't do this.
Just when I think i don't have a certain effect, someone proves to me it can be effective. I used chorus on a pop, Hip-hop kind of track on my drum bus, and that's what got me the job.
I'm a big Zakk Wylde fan. I use mild chorus, phaser or flanger all the time. I really love the chorus effect.
Chorus on high gain is awesome especially it your chorus is going into two separate amps.
I use a Boss CE5 on all my rhythm guitars... very subtle use but it makes a huge difference, it gives the tone depth, character and fattens everything up... also it makes your tone sound like your guitars are all quad tracked without actually having to quad track anything.

Eventide micro pitch - look into that - I use a rocktron intellifex with the same pitch delio - a “chorus sound but not chorus” hmmm - width and space

Even a bit of front end phase on a solo like Jake E Lee.
An effect level control is essential on a chorus pedal for me. If it's nasty, you can tame it!
i like the lavender one

yeah, those tones are pretty badass …
judas priest loved there chorus and Richie Faulkner keeping it alive with his one knob micro chorus
Sounds fine for ringing out chords. I personally wouldn't use a Chrorus for progressive riffs, but that's just my preference.
I typically put mods in the loop, but if you want to get rid of the "sheen" of chorus over high gain then just put it in front of the amp. I keep two mods on my board. One in front and one in the loop so I can choose where I want it for that part.

What's the riff you start playing at 12:40? Great video as always!
Done right… it can be cool… but it can totally date your sound
Are you using fx loop on the chorus pedal?
I don't know, I think Zakk Wylde has a massive, fantastic tone and he uses Chorus quite a bit, Paul Gilbert still uses it.

I love my zakk wylde chorus pedal on high gain
CC devilles tone on the first few poison albums were heavy af with the whole chorus thing
Don’t lie, you loved your mullet.
Haha yes I did
Zakk Wylde used it with drive on some of his best toned tracks.
It sounds better when you use a bass chorus which has a low pass filter so it only applies the chorus effect to the high freq
Thats hilarious I was just talking about how I don't like chorus on OD tones
Chorus before boost or after boost?
I usually put it in the loop

Are these in front or in the loop?Definitely 2 schools... can get those wider rack tones in loop.
I have the chorus in the loop
The trick : mix and depth
I make it barely move on clean and on dirty it moves enough to not drown out....

the only way is to run the pedal in stereo through both amp fxloops...it widens your tone, you can't fail with 2 amps in stereo

Ha Ha. 🤣. Love Distorted Chorus. Great subject. Sheeeeeeeeeen.
BTW, your Distorted Tone with that REVV is to me, is glorious. Sounds so good with subtle Chorus with that Tuning.
Rumor is that the guy who complained about the chorus is really Steven Wilson, lol. Kidding
Tell that to Zakk wylde, Dimebag, EVH, etc
Is that annoying tone of Zakk Wylde chorus?
Im more of a pitch shift for gain kind of guy, don’t like the warble
Ive never heard anyone say that. Ever.
It has its place, but was definitely over used in the 80's.
If I do it. It’s wet dry, or wet dry wet. And detuned. Not a moving chorus.
F#11 not f#min. cheers
If you hate swirly, chorused distortion my suggestion to you is do not listen to Hüsker Dü
All modulation is terrible for High Gain unless you name Ed Van Halen
Yes EVH never used high gain with any sort of chorusing. Dumb.
