  • Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 2 “Metamorphosen”, Krzysztof Penderecki, 1995.
National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra (Katowice), conducted by Antoni Wit, Konstanty Kulka (Violin).
Recorded at Grzegorz Fitelberg Concert Hall, 2000.
Picture : Scene from Vertigo, Alfred Hitchcock, 1958.
"" In his music, Penderecki has frequently demonstrated his special attitude to the violin - the instrument he diligently studied in his youth. As a composer and conductor, he has worked with great violin virtuosi. The mastery of Anne-Sophie Mutter, with whom he performed Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in 1988 in Lucerne, inspired him to write his Violin Concerto No. 2 (1992-95). In the meantime, the composer became fascinated by the aesthetic idea of claritas, which to some extent influenced the final shape of the new concerto. In comparison with the one written for Isaac Stern, his new work was much lighter in both texture and expression.
Just as the Concerto Winterreise for horn does not contain references to Schubert, “Metamorphosen” is not a tribute to Richard Strauss. The concerto’s subheading refers to the two attempts at giving the concerto its final shape, as well as to the transformations of sound material, with lyrical and cantilena themes presented in different instrumental variants, full of virtuoso dash - especially in the solo parts. This hybridicity also manifests itself in the harmony and form of the piece, which unifies opposed elements and resembles a sonata form with several culminations.
The piece opens with an Allegro ma non troppo. The song-like ascending violin melody features characteristic sixth and minor third intervals. The triplet theme of the violas in Allegro vivace leads to a short cadenza. There follows a Meno mosso with a wistful theme demonstrating an octave contour (similar intervallic structures were also used in Penderecki’s other works from this period). Here the tranquillo section attracts attention with sublime colours produced by celesta, triangle, orchestral bells, horn and clarinet. Tempo primo is a return to the initial type of musical narrative, and the Allegretto and Andante that follow lead to a serene Vivace. A return of the triplet motif and a completely new melody in B minor precede a violent culmination and a retrospective solo cadenza. After a dozen clusters comes the epilogue-like Andante con moto, which restores - for the last time - the sombre mood of the opening. In the end, the violin ascends in a song-like manner into its highest register and tunes in with the orchestra in a minor key chord. ""

@Shiva Shankar Ah, fair! Great choices! (though I'm not that familiar with much of Gorecki)
