This is easy one of the best illustration channel on TH-cam. I am not a procreate user but watching your videos really helped me improve my art. Thank you for that and keep up the good work. And awesome community with built here, everyone is so nice. Good job :)

I’m following your tutorials to learn how to better use procreate. I tend to use it like I would art supplies. I do understand layers but I can’t wrap my head around blend modes. If you want a lighter color, why not choose a lighter color? Not to mention they do different things to the colors you’re using. It gets confusing. BTW, I very much enjoy watching your videos and have learned a lot, thank you!
Blending modes can be confusing for sure - it's probably my most requested video and I promise I'm working on making a tutorial about them 🤍 The key thing to remember is that there's not a right or wrong way to use them, it's all about exploration 😊 Before filming, when I work on my test piece, I always try a bunch of blending modes and see which one works best. Of course, over time, you'll have a better idea of how they work and you'll pretty much know which one to go for. And yes, they do alter the colors you're using, which is exactly why you might want to use blending modes instead of just changing to a lighter color! That way, your lights/shadows/whatever adapt to the colors below them, creating some nice color variation and making your piece richer overall. Sorry for the long, not super clear explanation 😅

Hey, Genevieve! I have sort of an off-topic question. The iPad Pro and Gen 2 Pencil aren’t really in my budget. Would a Gen 9 iPad and First Gen Pencil still do a good job in Procreate or do you think it’d be worth it to save for the newer versions? (I’m writing and illustrating my first picture book).
