So I watched Mr Salles and i took notes on his points, and on results day i got a 8 in lang and a 9 in lit! I was so happy, the revision payed off. So thank you Mr Salles!

Sir, my interpretation of “quite stoically” was that it shows her strength because of her ability to repress the emotions that she is feeling from having to do this task. Alternatively, she may simply be fed up of her father, so this does not invoke any emotion in her anymore. Therefore, we may feel sympathy for her because she is either hiding her emotions or because she is such a destroyed human that she doesn’t feel the natural emotions from her treatment. It hasn’t got any VASE methods, so I’m not sure whether it was clever to talk about it or not?

As long as the bullet points are all in sentences, I don't think there is a risk. I would number them so that the examiner can see how many explanations you have made. But, there is always a small element of risk in any approach, so only do what you are comfortable with.

You can preplan a story and adapt it to question.
For example, I plan a story about a car crash and the question will be about bad weather so I'll write about the car crash and add bad weather. If the question is write a story about something unexpected, the car crash could be unexpected. Even if it's a descriptive about a seashell, you could write by looking at the seashell, you could see all its cracks, all the pain its been through and all its stories. And then you could flashback to a particular story of the seashell falling into the road in that car crash story

Whatever the question says it is, it is always about themes. So, the author explores their ideas - themes - through how they portray the character. It is always easier to write about the author’s ideas in a theme question, I think.

Hi Mr Salles! I have completed a response for this question, would you be kind enough to let me know your thoughts?
Overall, I strongly agree that Hartop is cruel to Alice. In my response, I will critically evaluate this.
The passage starts with Hartop 'leaning' over his wife to converse with his daughter. In doing so, he shows no regard to his wife's personal space. Perhaps this is due to some anxiety or stress which preoccupies his mind. The writer then uses pathetic fallacy to create a scene which is synonymous with the character's mood; we can already see the frustration in Hartop but this is emphasised as Alice is made to walk 'in the rain and the darkness'. Furthermore, this use of emotive language creates sympathy in the readers mind as nobody would want to be out in an environment like that. It can also be inferred that Hartop is 'cruel' to let his daughter go out in such dangerous conditions where the wind repeatedly 'veer and smashed her...full in the face' This implies that he is quite self-centred and shows no concern for his kin. The writer has employed the technique of onomatopoeia as they say the wind seemed to 'smash' her. The verb 'smash' creates quite a strong effect which emulates what happened and again makes readers draw empathy for Alice. Contrast flows throughout the text as Hartop is sheltered under his car while his daughter is exposed to the elements.
Alice seemed to 'accept the journey' and 'accept the rain', which implies her submissive nature to her rather dominant father.
As Alice comes back, she is questioned 'Only?'...'Only?...'What d'ye mean by only Eh?' This portrays an interrogative-style dialogue between father and daughter which almost makes us feel he is in an army regiment, throwing orders. The repetition of the verb 'only' also creates an effect of intimidation in the readers mind and validates the cruelty Alice is subjected to.
We can also infer that Alice is acquainted with this type of aggression from her father as she obeys him 'at once'.

    • @MrSallesTeachesEnglish
      @MrSallesTeachesEnglish  3 ปีที่แล้ว

I would ask if you had watched the video! That will give you a strong idea of where your strengths and weaknesses are. It is a good answer which would probably score a grade 6.

    @lola7172 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi sir could you please give me some feedback for a few pieces I wrote for paper one question 5 ready for my exam on Wednesday.
    Narrative 1:
Space and time lost it continuity. Where I was and what have lead me here were questions that befuddled my already daunted mind as I attempted to make sense of this inscrutable mystery. I was standing at the beginning of what looked like an abandoned street. The cobbled road - which may have once been full of life and bustling with people - was now dilapidated and derelict with potholes. Putrefying trees permeated either side of the street spotlighting their emaciated, black branches reaching towards the sky like the ghastly fingers of a witch.
Petrified with fear, I felt a sudden urge to wander forward.
Sinister, stormy clouds loomed over me like a thick velvet blanket. A raven cawed in the distance as if its piercing wail was a warning to what I was about to find. My heart pound faster with each progressing and shuddering step. Through the sordid and murky mist, I could just distinguish a minuscule structure. Languidly, it was only then i began to realise, to my dread, the nature of this curious and peculiar object.
    A grave.
I had been standing on a tarnished gave. Against all my instinctual impulses, i crouched down and inspected the crumbling sepulchre. Centuries of wind and dust had taken its toll on the tombstone, eroding beyond recognition. It was virtually covered in moss with a significantly conspicuous crack running diagonally through it.
    Dread,panic,nervousness…
These emotions expanded substantially within the human encephalon immobilising my freedom of thought. Far within the distance, five pillars towered firm and secure. The pillars were fabricated from what seemed like rock-hand, matt black wood and the disjointed shingle crevices bowed down by the weight of its age. A putrid stench of rotting mould involved my nostrils. A perturbing feeling of familiarity suffused itself within my thoughts. Edging forward, the words carved within the stone caught my eye.
Attentively, I read my details on the gravestone…
    Narrative 2:
    3 minutes to go…
Immediately, I awoke to the harsh wails of the sirens. Bombs echoed deafeningly through the cold morning dawn as battered shells zoomed overhead. With each progressing step I took, fate guided me into the depths of the: confining, constricting and cruel corridors of the trench. Consciously, I ensured to savour what I suspected would be the last minutes of my life. Panic surged through my distressed system like an actively growing malignant tumour: transferring colonies of infected cells through my veins to my brain. Avoiding the walk to the frontline, I witnessed darkness wonder around haphazardly through the atmosphere in its utmost elation. I felt entrapped.
    2 minutes to go…
Desperately ,I attempted to grasp some form of courage from somewhere; however i could only seem to clutch my rifle tightly by my side under the power of my quivering hands. Far in the distance, bodies lying limp from the ravages of war attracted my eyes. The though that i may soon be joining them sent a sharp chill down my spine. The trenches wall had virtually melted, its occupants were indistinguishable as their writhing bodies lay bloodied and broken. A few were still alive, their groans puncturing the deathly silence like a knife. Their expressions mirror images of my own- of pure unadulterated terror.
    1 minute to go…
The blurring flare of crimson and pallid lights distorted my vision- whilst the clouds in the murky and ebony sky billowed like symbols of death reminding me of the mortality that awaited me. All i could focus on was the frantic and irregular beat of my heart synchronising in perfection with the valuable amount of seconds I had left before the death toll of the bell rang out. The heavens unveiled the thick, polluted and caliginous velvet quilts of the sky allowing rain to lash down. A putrid stench of moist and decaying flesh engulfed my nostrils immobilising my sense of smell.
    A bell rang.
I endeavoured to inhale as much oxygen as i could into my clogged airways. I observed something strange in the atmosphere and swiftly turned around. A distinct yellow gas plummeted down at various speeds. I let out a frenetic weep, “Gas!”Gas!”
    Description:
An inferno inhabits the vibrant sky, as the clouds meticulously smudge across the blue sky of a soft gentle zephyr cools the air. Shadows of gargantuan trees hide as the midday sun approaches. Leaves of the elm trees fan out like the elegant feathers of a peacock. A sweet surrendering scent of the moist morning dew cascades all around the sublime woodland. Verdant limbs intermingled through a plethora of evergreen foliage, forming a crowded canopy that scarcely permitted the harsh rays of the sun to burn through. Tenaciously, the stealthy fingers reached out to embrace liberty and freedom.
The tress stood proud and tall as protectors of the exigent grounds.
As the morning developed the sounds of young birds began to fulfil the air with a glorious spitz. They chirped, tweeted and warbled incessantly. The pleasant aroma of citrus and lavender occupied the clearing: it seemed satisfying pleasant. The picturesque scenery has the appearance of utopia which blossomed, alluring your mind deeper and deeper into the enchanted land. Specks of light from the intense midday sun had successfully fought their way through the overhead canopy. The bronze and suntanned bank of the trees gaped open woefully, allowing nature to penetrate further.
Whispers of the remaining organisms reverberated through the atmosphere.
The sheen of reflection on the lustrous leaves from the glowing sun sparkling in the tranquil air; however, the land is isolate and derelict. With the intensity of the light, unique combinations of blue hues and pearlescent purples form. The tall trees possess a sweet serenity that keeps all safe from delinquent harm. Where the rare rays of sunlight managed to breach through the the leafy shelter: the leaves beneath had breached edges that resembled torn parchment. Amongst them, insects scuttled - manoeuvring themselves between moments of shade before the forgiving rays could scorch their exposing body.
The severe squawks of blackbirds echoed like sirens around the clearing.
In a timely hurry, the sun bloomed into the sky with a warm mellow glow sending what was left packing for the arrival of the pallid moon. Tranquility and serenity are forth seen in the depths of the land. Sheets of thick white clouds preserve the gritty grounds beneath before signs of sunrise strike again.

Well done on your fantastic efforts. It is mostly grade 7, but there quite a few phrases where you are chucking too much vocabulary at us. Imagine the description had to appear in a novel you wanted to read. How much of the language would you change?

Mr salles i have. a problem. My last 4 jekyll and Hyde literature essays I got Level 4 and my teacher said I need to think outside the box . I have watched a lot of your videos but I still don’t. Know what structure to use for my exam tomorrow.. she said my work is too formal which again I don’t understand what she means

Neither do I. Ask your teacher to rewrite one of your paragrahs the way she wants it, or at least dictate a new version for you, so you can see what she means.

Mr Salles, I have heard other teachers explain that it is much easier to strongly agree, throughout the entire question, however your video explains that partial disagreement is key for the ''evaluate'' part of the question, can you clarify what I should do in my exam tomorrow?

  • @scan2man
    @scan2man 2 ปีที่แล้ว

In your guide Mr Salles you have bullet points. In the video it is not bullet points. Am I missing something? Should the bullet points be made into a paragraphed response?

Ok, good question. 99.9% of students and teachers will be expecting paragraphs. I agreed, until I started writing and reading hundreds of exam answers. Then I realised I needed a foolproof method which meant every examiner would have to give me the marks. And also a method which would prevent me writing anything which didn’t score marks. That’s where the bullet points come in. Try it and see. And sadly I made this video before writing the guides!

Hi Mr Salles, what grade would you give this question 5 i had done today in timed conditions? Many thanks.
Life always had a funny way of revelation to you. It always kept things veiled, under its shrouds of mystery, always waiting for the exact moment it can catch one off guard. I had always seen the games played by life; it always managed to stay one step ahead of me, like an old wise man playing chess with a toddler.
My world is no normal world, instead it is filled to the brim with underlying secrets and mysteries, always left closely guarded by life, yet waiting for that one diligent soul to crack the code. Crack the code, the very one mission that generations of my people had toiled in, labouring in unravelling the curtains that concealed the greatest source of mystical power known in the universe. Alas, all their efforts resulted in vain, with no ultimate breakthrough. Or so we thought...
Recently, with the advent of newfound technology a bright young man by the name of Adrius Fickelheim, a bright, slender individual, had stumbled onto one of the greatest archaeological discoveries ever seen in our modern era. Now Adrius was no normal young soul, he possessed a quality that outshone even the best of scholars. An unending fiery pit of passion, that fuelled his mind to achieve only the greatest of achievements. The greatest of achievements he really did find, as he had uncovered an ancient artifact inscribed with a prophecy. Now you may wonder how I know our journey? Well, in order to quench your thirst I will tell you who I am. I go by the name of Odarius, and I am the overseer of the greatest project ever laucnhed by our people. I too had dreams of finally drinking from the well of power, and the ability to finally end our eons long search.
I awaited in my office patiently (for the most part) as Adrius was returning with his artifact. My office was a lovely, antique themed, oval shaped room, with great expenditure poured in, in order to capture the essence of the ancient world. Carvings were embraided carefully into large, beige stones, each one looking mightier than the last. A beautiful place, one I was proud to work in and given the privilege to marvel at this sight everyday.
I sat there for the better part of 20 minutes, when the tensions of silence were finally broken with a knock. It was Adrius, and in his hand the briefcase carrying the artifact that could turn the fate of mankind on its heels. “Adrius, I’ve been waiting for you for a while. Tell me, what in the world is this! What can we do?”
“Mr Kadensky, it’s an honour to meet you. Well sir, this artifact has an ancient inscription on its side, one that I believe to be a prophecy that holds the gateway to the mystical powers we so desperately seek. I tell you! Our names will be ingrained into history!” He spoke with a very upbeat and excited tone, his eyes glistening like blue sapphires with delight as he looked at me with a sense of awe at my office. I felt very intrigued, impressed, amazed, mesmerised. My lifelong search, could this really be the beginning of the end of our search? It was a momentous feeling that overwhelmed my senses, as I felt a tingling in my fingers like never before, with my breath quickening.
I asked him to pull out the artifact, to which he put on his black leather gloves and opened the case, to reveal this potential piece of history. It was a beautiful artifact, absolutely gorgeous, unlike anything I had ever seen! It appeared to be a vase of some sorts, with its shape. It was still rather dirty and dusty, yet its blue dyes had still the ability to shine like a thousand suns, and its drawings only served to mesmerise my senses. I asked if I could touch it, to which Adrius politely nodded.
“This...This is incredible. Do you know what this means?” I tried to contain myself, to a considerable degree of success.
“Sir, I must say it is a glory, its scent also entices me.” Adrius replied, in a higher pitched tone, like he too was trying to hide his mountains of joy within him. I extended my finger, turning the vase to the site of writing. Delightful. The writing was in a beautiful, curved font, one that truly encapsulated the true essence of the ancient era and its golden age. I myself was slightly fluent in the ancient script, for I had studied for 12 years, using old scriptures, scrolls and books. As I looked at it, it read:
‘Nostradamus, when the nights are day and when the days are night, seek the child with the orb, for in that the mystery will unfold. Head to the lands of spice, in it you shall finally turn the dice.’
I... I couldn’t believe it. I was in awe at the words. This really was it. A tear managed to find its way out of my eye and onto my cheek, eventually wetting my beard ever so slightly. I stood up immediately, held Adrius by his shoulders and told him that we were to leave tomorrow. He seemed slightly stunned, yet that fiery passion led to an almost subconscious response of “YES SIR!”
“Perfect, I shall meet you tomorrow at the port then, yes?”
“Of course sir, I look forward to it”
    -
    Night.
    Sunrise.
The morning sun came to chase away the night, a sleepless night for me and im sure for Adrius as well. I quickly got dressed, packing my things and getting ready for the perilous journey ahead. I was to wear my best of garments, for the photographers would surely need to capture the best of angles for our discovery, at which point I felt I was on a crash course to achieving. Now, I put on my light brown leather blazer, formed with the finest cotton and linen, creating a slim and sleak look. It had small, strips across the whole blazer, only adding to the sense of eloquence that this blazer had for me. In fact it was much more than a blazer, it was my fathers blazer. The very one he wore on his expeditions every time he left the house to venture. Now it was me, 27 years later. No longer am I a little boy, I now carry on my fathers legacy, and I do so with pride. I wore a sleek pair of jet black leggings in order to look classy, and after hastily brushing my teeth and packing away my essentials, I dashed off to the port, waiting to set sail unto the great oceans, and finally tearing down the curtain that life had held for us.

I arrived only 20 minutes later after stepping out my house, much to my joy Adrius was there, wearing a lovely light blue suit, coupled with a very charming hat he had found. As expected, the press was rampant, each one of their dazzling lights finding a way at our eyes, the constant shuffle and the occasional shout of questions our way, such as ‘Tell us more’,’what do you plan to do now?’ Their shutters creating a sea of sound, drowning out my own voice. I chuckled, for this reaction was deserved when being faced with the prospect of changing mankind and opening a new chapter no?
The boat we were to sail on was the SS legacy (a very pleasantly fitting name, im sure you would have noticed). The boat was a mammoth of a ship, towering 30 feet into the sky, reaching its great exhaust pipes into the white, cotton clouds. It was beautifully painted with black and red strips, complimented with a dark purple lining on the hull. We stepped onto the ramp to carry us to the ‘land of the deserts’, and as we boarded, I felt as if the entire world was in my hand at that very moment.
The anchors finally lifted, propelling us forward unto our new age, as the age of discovery was at our cusps. The land, slowly getting smaller and fainter, as we progressed on the great oceans of the world. I resided to my quarters in order to sleep, to make up for last night.
    Nightfall.
A loud crash violently stirred me up at around 1am. Lights all around the ship suddenly were turned on, as many shouts and the sound of workers running on the decks above could be felt. I rushed outside to see what this commotion was all about, only to find we were in the midst of an extreme thunderstorm, with waves like mountains sending the ship rocking violently up and down. Something seemed off... Not natural. I felt a primal instinct to go and collect the artifact and keep it by my side, for fear of losing it in this chaos. I managed to grab it, yet its words were glowing and it was burning hot! I screamed in pain as it scorched my hands. Something was clearly not right, something clearly was approaching...

But you took way too long writing no? on 0.25x speed it still looks sped up. So the 8 minutes you took to write the answer in the video are, in reality, over 32 minutes. There's no way you could write that much in the actual exam.
I may have made a mistake but it is quite confusing. Please keep a timer present next time. It would give a better sense of timing for us as students.

    1) Point - The writer describes ...
    2) Evidence - Quotation
    3) Three step analysis (You have to zoom into a word as well).
    Write 3 to 4 paragraphs (Paper 1, Q4)
    Do you recommend this?
