Oh the days when flying was truly fun. Tridents, VC-10’s, DC8 & 9’s, 707’s, 747’s... almost every flight had a party in the rear, drinks flowed, one could smoke on board, cabin crew were friendly...
Yes, and every one of those guys has lung cancer. I shudder when I think of how much second hand smoke I was exposed to on those flights. Otherwise great, but smoking in a plane is just stupid.
Takes me back to happy days spent watching the planes from the Queens Building at Heathrow Airport in the 1970s. Can still smell that aviation fuel and hear the roar of the jets now. BOAC Vickers VC-10 will always be my favourite - such a beautiful airliner and British made.
Wow. That really took me back, I could smell the unburned Jet2. Helps memories of how exotic it was when BOAC and National Air Lines were both awarded the Miami to Heathrow non-stop in 1970. We rode our bikes all the way from South Miami to MIA just to watch the evening depatures. NAL served the route with a DC-8-50, but the highlight of the evening was the once-a-day BOAC 747 departure to London and Pan Am 747 to Rio and Buenos Aires. A special time, still seen watching the pm line-up of flag-carriers stacked up at the gates at JFK. Thanks for the awakening the whole memory cluster with this snippet. I'll be replaying it in my head the rest of the day.
Another example of the British airline industry restricting its sales by developing for a niche market (the Empire routes). In fact the VC10 was very well engineered and it was more profitable than the 707 in spite of its higher running costs. This was because passengers preferred it and consequently it flew with a higher percentage of seats filled.
I feel so lucky to have grown up under final to JFK. Actually, a few miles south, so we always saw the arrivals as they flew in over North Long Island Sound. Everything that flew into JFK 1962 - 1972 I saw. The TWA 747 was the most beautiful thing. I'll never forget seeing it for the first time. Seeing this on video is one thing, but seeing these aircraft actually flying, the grace of their design is lost in two dimensional celluloid.
January 2023 and came across this wonderful video again. Takes me back to the fantastic era of early 1970s, stood on either the Queen’s Building or top floor of car park 2, aircraft spotting with my mates. The constant aroma of jet fuel filled the air, along with the unmistakable and unforgettable sound of the Rolls Royce Conway engines of the VC-10, some 707s and DC-8s. 50 years on and I’d love to step back in time, just for one day to sample those delights once more ❤️
*InfiniteMushroom* BOAC were just starting to buy Boeing 747s in 1970 and were more economical compared to the Super VC10 and Boeing 707, these aircrafts were fazed out gradually to make way for the new generation of wide bodied aircrafts. And the reason why the Ilyushin Il-62 was in service longer than the Super VC10 is because Russia keep their old junk aircrafts well past their sell-by-date (hence, why they have more aircraft crashes).
Flew over many thousands of miles on the VC 10 and the supers. Absolutely beautiful planes. So powerful. Was allowed to sit in the jump seat for several hours on flights to Mauritius where I lived. East African and BOAC. Good days by far.
I love the VC-10, and in that BOAC livery -- just the best. A relative used to fly them; he brought one to Auckland on a world tour. I can still picture it flying over the house... Came over all nostalgic there for a moment.
Wow! My friend you have hit another home run. Tridents, Super VC-10's, 747-100's (with auxiliary inlets), and an Alitalia DC-8 with turbojets. There actually was a time when air travel was fun, exciting, comfortable and the planes looked and sounded great too. Thanks again!
Very nice clips. Concise, not dragged out, and very well done. I loved to see the Hawker Siddeley Tridents, and the BOAC VC 10s. We had a few BOAC VC10s at Toronto International Airport (now named Pearson - YYZ), but not frequently it seems.
Oh I do enjoy all these old birds..... Tridents , VC-10's, B727 and the 747 I remember watching them all at SPL in my childhood days,. Now I can look back at 43 years working at SPL at a handlingcompany and I was able to go into several a/c types just because I was allowed to.... Now, because of security regulations I cannot do that anymore..... me sad old dude.
Apart from Concorde, the Super VC 10 was the most beautiful aircraft to ever take to the skies. Flew the Super to New York in the early 70s & loved it. Very classy!
Brilliant nostalgic piece of film, the VC10 and Trident deserved to do so much better than they did, love the row of parked BEA tridents, the taxing BOAC VC10 passing the 707, and the take off of early Pan Am and BOAC 747. Unfortunately most of the airlines have gone or merged now but great memories of my youth .
Thank you so very much for sharing this video. Other videos ive seen from this time period are massively poorer quality. To have the sound aswell is brilliant. Thank you again! Hope you are all well and good :)
As a teenager in about 1972 I got to fly from London to Sydney on a Super VC10 with about six stops on the way. Such a beautiful looking plane and wonderfully loud as well. I remember thinking it was a shame that more airlines weren't using them.
That’s a great video!!! Totally awesome! Those BOAC colours look amazing! British Airways need to paint a large amount of their fleet in this livery - it would be a great commemorative occasion. Loved the Vickers VC10 and the PAN AM 707s!!!
I was working at Heathrow in those days, mainly VC10's, but we also went to service other airlines that did not have an engineering base there and getting into an Air India Jumbo, one day there were signs of someone had been cooking on a camping gas stove in the doorway area and there was still the pans and aluminum trays with remnants of food in them. One thing that is missing in this video is the Viscounts screaming around with just the outer engines running.
Oh my! For the way we were. The days of quality: quality aircraft & airlines. When passengers knew how to behave, & of course, Heathrow long before they turned it into a shopping centre.

Conways,Speys etc.More videos like this please.Does anyone remember the outside observation walkways with sleeping policemen across them at Gatwick, when the airlines of the day were BEA, BUA,British Caladonian,Laker,Lufthansa,BOAC,Pan Am.etcThe planes, 1-11,Trident,VC10,Vanguard,Viscount,Herald,DC8,DC9,DC10,747,707,727,Late Comets etc.We all live our childhood coz it was great and innocent!!
Halcyon days! Today's bland lookie-likey twin jets just don't even come close. Glad I got to witness these wonderful jets back then. Thanks for the great video!
Particularly the "Super-VC10" London-Rome-Entebbi-Nairobi = magic or the return. At dawn; with sunshine streaming through the windows and breakfast being served northbound over the Alps., Again "Magic" (57-years-ago = "Ouch ouch ouch - So long ago")
yeah, they could do a 747-436 in the BOAC livery and I dunno an A320 in the BEA livery. And then they could repaint the last BA 767 in the 'Landor' livery, similar to what they did to the last 757 where they painted it in the 'Negus' livery.
I flew on Tridents from 1966 to 1973, they were indeed an incredible aircraft; fully automatic takeoffs and landings (with of course the captains hands ghosting the control column; just in case) Also; Flying from LHR into cities just south of the Alps; Milan, Turin, Venice; the captain would (by arrangement and prior advice with the cabin crew) require the cabin was entirely cleared; and from cruising altitude; full dumps would be applied; together with reverse thrust, and yes; that very tough airframe shook energetically during what could only be described as a very exciting descent with the altimeter unwinding like a spring., That was flying :) not like the school bus type of flying we get today....
@@lance3poo7932 DC10? the worst most dangerous aircraft, no way would i want to fly in one, just one flight 40 years ago in a rattly DC 10 was too many.

Yeah in 1979 I joined BA and used to park my mini on the peritrack on the way home to plane spot. Used to wind the windows down and my whole car shook when Concorde took off. Those were the days?
Kuwait Airways Trident 1E first off the rank. I've seen (and heard...very, very LOUD) that KAC Trident land many, many times as my dad was a pilot for them for ten years 1960 to 70 based in Beirut and flew the Viscount, Comet and Trident. I was very lucky as I managed to fly in every one of these great aircraft in this video growing up and I appreciated it. Beautiful aircraft, all of them but my favourite was the MEA and LIA Convair 990 Coronado. Loved the smoke it made.
Well, I am really getting old... Of the plane types shown here, I only never flew on a VC-10, but I did fly once each on a 747-100 (Air France, EZE-VCP-GIG), a Trident 3 (British Airways, STR-LHR), and a DC-8-62 (Braniff, GIG-VCP-LIM-PTY-MIA).
Well I did fly on a VC-10. London-Bagdad-Kuwait and return in 1976. At Kuwait on the return the Kuwati army with machine guns came on board and removed the young man sitting next to me. I was tasked with checking that he had not left any hand baggage behind.
1.45 is the classic view of the Trident line from the (now all gone) Heathrow Roof Gardens. I spent a good chunk of my school holidays up there. It is where the teenage fans used to scream from when the Pop groups arrived in U.K.
Back in the 70s I can remember going to Heathrow and that distinct smell of jet fuel filling the air . Plus the turbine whine and the sooty jet trails , I love the nostalgia but I'm sure the air quality now is a lot safer .
02:40.. LOVE the VC10. Elegant, sleek and one of the most beautiful aircraft ever flown.
the most beautiful a/c ever flown is Concorde and Tu-144
@@5012810 The VC10 was the best plane to fly in. Concorde was good to fly as well, I'll give the TU-144 a miss.

The dc9 isnt exactly luxurious
Don't forget about the boeing 727

Because smoking on board was really safe wasn’t it!
That last BOAC livery was so elegant. It looked the best on the VC-10.

Yes indeed. It’s design was optimised to serve the British “colonial” routes and this helped to give irs rival, the Boeing 707 a commercial advantage.
T tail came with the “deep stall” risk. There was no real need for T tails on civil airliners.

The first two Tridents were taken at there manufacturers airfield at Hatfield. That Kuwait colour scheme was outstanding.
Nice flares!! Interesting to see the G-ARVE tail number at 1:02. I flew on G-ARVA.
It's crazy how close you were allowed to film at the runways :O
Good to see an Air India 747 at Heathrow with its famous livery.
Back in the 70s I can remember going to Heathrow and that distinct smell of jet fuel filling the air . Plus the turbine whine and the sooty jet trails , I love the nostalgia but I'm sure the air quality now is a lot safer .
