THE SAINT The Checkered Flag first aired on July 1, 1965.
Episode summary from imdb.com:
"Oscar Newley has perfected a new fuel injection system for his racing car and approaches the Saint for financial backing. However the car breaks down during a race and he believes that it has been sabotaged by Ellington, a rival owner-driver. Suspicions are compounded when Oscar is nearly killed in a fire at his workshop and the car is again sabotaged. The chief culprit would seem to be Oscar's driver Alec but then he is murdered. The Saint must race to find the perpetrator in every sense."
An ominous beginning, a villainous middle with a happy ending.
The 1964 British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch was used as the back drop for this episode of The Saint, which was already into it's fourth season by 1965.
Did Jack Brabham know he was in this show? He can be seen at 9:41 in his #5 Brabham-Climax pulling out into the pit lane having a look at Dan Gurney's #6 car (also a Brabham-Climax). Also spotted is John Surtees in his #7 Ferrari.
Tim & I are old enough to remember when this show was Prime Time television. That's cool! To tell the truth, we were probably a bit too young to watch it at the time but got to know it better when the reruns started in the '70s.
Roger Moore is perfect in the role and for some unknown reason, in this episode, Simon Templar drives a Bentley instead of his trademark Volvo 1800.
In the real (1964) race, Jim Clark came first, with Graham Hill second. Note at the end, the TV show cars had to be #1 and #3 to match the Clark and Hill footage.

It's nice to see good guys being actual good guys because they had decent principles. Now you have bad good guys and good bad guys. The overwhelming need to victimize villains is not entertaining to me.
When Moore got a telephone offer to do JAMES BOND with his son poolside, Roger pause the caller and asked his son: "Who would you remember more, Bond or The Saint?" His son replied: "The Who?" But, I did enjoy THE SAINT whilst growing up. Good to be able to get all my homework done early and as a reward, get up at late night and watch an episode. Not just a fond memory but a better time and place for most of us.
I'm really enjoying the saint 60 years later.
The Who will be long remembered, as well.
Better time and place for sure. I'm with you. Sad part is, I remember thinking that when I grew up my future was going to be so great, I couldn't wait to get older. Now, I see the "future" isn't so great after all , and wishing I could go back. Sucks to know your best days are now behind you, and didn't even take time to really enjoy them. "Youth" truly is wasted on the young 😔

Little known fact, Roger studied Ving Tsun Kung fu under GM Victor Kan, Bruce Lee’s elder Kung fu brother. When Lee Marvin challenged Roger to a fight, Roger beat Marvin up. Marvin said Roger was a real tough guy. Sifu, GM Victor Kan, said he was too soft to be a fighter. As my Kung fu brother (we studied under the same teacher, GM Victor Kan), Roger is my favourite bond, and one of my heroes. Love him.
I never accepted Roger Moore as James Bond. Sean Connery was Bond.

"The Saint" shall always remain my favourite ITC show out of all them. Roger Moore is THE Simon Templar. He has left behind one hell of a legacy. R.I.P Roger Moore.

Roger Moore was the original choice for Bond, however he was committed to the Saint and a Scottish actor was approaced Sean Connery. Not a bad thing we got the Saint, The Persuaders and a great James Bond.
How was he not the obvious choice after Connery. The Saint was one long audition.

The Bond books were already published, and written by Ian Fleming, MI5/6,7,8 who transformed the OSS into the CIA. In retrospect it seems as if Fleming was also trying to warn us..."Dr No," "Goldfinger," etc...
I remember watching re-runs of this show in the mid-70´s when I was around 9 years old, way past the end of the show´s last season, I think the last season was aired in 1968, I remember watching this episode back in 1976, when I had my tonsils removed, while eating lots of vanilla and strawberry ice cream. Those were the days!

Watching this late at night. TV Land and Nick at Nite used to air these late at night and I had a craving for it now (just coming up on midnight).
Still hard to believe Roger's gone now. Back when we sat around in college watching these on TV Land, even though Roger was fully retired, it was comforting to know he was still around.

The Saint always used to be on a Sunday evening. The next day one of my friends and I, I remember her name was Christine, went through all the fight scenes on the way to school. She didn't have a very happy home life I think. Neither did I; but I'll never forget the expression of happiness and sheer enjoyment on her face. Way to go Simon !
I meet Roger Moore on 21st June 1996 at Garden City Shopping Centre,Winnipeg Canada.. He arrivied on football pitch via Helicopter provided by Canada forces. He was ambassador UNICEF and speaking about the work he does, I brought my video camera and video taped his speech. I then gave him a copy of the video and Roger Moore sent me signed photo of him in the mail. RIP Till we meet again.

As a kid , I had every Saint book available to buy . My Initials are also ST so I identified closely Roger could not have been more perfectly cast as the Saint .. Perfection

Loved how they Incorporated footage of the Late Great Jim Clark into the episode. You could tell it was the great man himself as the helmet and gloves changed colour to black and the car suddenly got a stripe at times
I was 9 when it first aired, I still like it.
The "fuel injection system" on the conman's car happens to actually be a Weber 40 DCOE carburettor! Used them on my own cars many times back in the day.
Suppose they meant the acceleration pump of the DCOE...

These youngsters now with their media degrees can only dream of making classics like these.
Writers came from all sorts of backgrounds, and all were avid readers, hence the great or sly literary references. Nowadays they're from "industry" families and their life experience is basically film school or media studies - four years spent watching and then re-hashing old scripts but with less depth of character and increasing escalation of porn and violence.
R.I.P. Sir Roger Moore is the peoples James Bond. The whole world loved him. I remember watching "THE SAINT" when I was 10 year's old. Still my favorite program Roger Moore is THE SIMON TEMPLAR.

About the Volvo Simon usually drove. The producers asked Jaguar to give them an XKE. Jaguar said no and Roger Moore owned the Volvo which was used on the show. It popularized Volvo.

Race footage probably from 1964 British G.P. Some editing didn't match that well, mixing a bit of earlier footage from 1958 or 59, but that doesn't mater at all. The whole effect was excellent. Very 60 s British TV. The subject car was I think, a Lotus 22 Formula Junior and the fuel injection system was big side draft Weber DCOE. The movie Grand Prix (1966) did the same thing by using Formula Three cars mocked up with wide wheels and added on body work to make them appear like Formula One cars. Great job considering the time and budget that was available to them. Really like the series, saw these broadcast in Canada as a kid, we generally got them six months to a year after they ran in Britain. Same for Danger Man and The Avengers.
The twin Webbers were carburators unlike the Tecallimat Jackson injection system. Of course German Bosch made mechanical fuelinjection pumps for cars and CEV,Simms.Lucas, etc all played with petrol fuels probably a lot of other companies also got involved. But here the topic is actual spraying fuel rather than the DCOE's sucking through a venturie and causeing the fuel to rise into the induction air stream via the main and idle jets .Be Blessed
I just noticed that on car number 7 the fuel application seems to be DOWN DRAUGHT ? Can this be a raceing car school from Lotus since all cars seem identical or suchlike ?
PS I visited Brans a few times in 64 I think the Moto Guzzies were being raced again by J,Hartle against Hailwood or Jackimo great sound anyway. Derick minter made a show also on Norton 500 Manx. (King of Brands ) I purchased my Norton Atlas from Hallets of Canterbury who were Backing Derick Minter. Great times then no fast family hacks on the roads with similar Driver users lacking interests in the technology and how to use it ! BRRRRRR! I am still alive after all that too ! Several times nearly not,People still do not see motorcycles on the road ???? SO Guys Drive Defencively on the wonderfull machines of today ! Blessings.
Yup, the race starts from the grid, cuts to paddocks bend, cuts off just at the braking point to druids and the next clip is after T4, then it jumps to second to last corner. After those it starts to go all over the place..
At 9:43 you can see sir Jack Braham in his number 5 BT7 - it was used for the 1963-1965 F1 seasons before being replaced by the BT19 in 1966. The period and probably race is spot on.

The head of one of the great F1 teams proposed to me any number of times, but all I could think of was a life of broiling hot arenas, the smell of oil and "noise, noise, noise!" I was too young and naive to think of First class hotels with en suite grand pianos, and the great female defense... "I'll skip this race darling, I have a headache...!" Now if Roger were to propose, hahah!

Note how Moore actually asks for his drink ''Shaken, not stirred''. Makes me think that he was already in negotiations with Cubbie and Saltzman to star as Bond. Remember: This is a 1965 television show. Makes me think that perhaps Moore had been watching Sean Connery closely as Bond for a while back then.

Almost forgot,1965 that Scotsman driving a foreign car with a non Offy engine in the wrong end and painted green won Indy by 2 laps and an upstart Texan driving a selfmade plastic car won Sebring in a down pour. I was at Indy!

I've raced at Brands a few times but at 27 minutes 58 seconds the car is going the wrong way past the pits. OK, the film has been printed the wrong way around but someone must have noticed. The main race is the British/European GP on the 11 July 1964. I was there, not driving but as a spectator.

Even though the Volvo 1800 he drove was a cool car, driving this Bentley S3 Continental was the right car for someone this sophisticated as Simon Templar.
In 1975, I was studying in class 10, my English was weak. I used to watch The Saint on TV.
I asked my father what Templar's mean, he said, "

Rotax 636nut He probably had a competition licence from previous motorsport events he had taken part in even though it's suggested at one point that he has "no experience" and is simply "mad about racing". Well, in saint land that'd do it!! Later on as Brett Sinclair in the persuaders they had Roger as a former racing driver ✌👍
