After I span around with 'One Night/All Night', 'Neverender' and 'Incognito', I had to go into some of the deep cuts of 'Hyperdrama' and 'Dear Alan' came up to rework the Fluence way, 'Dear Alan' is a tribute to Alan Braxe known for hits including 'Music Sounds Better With You', 'Intro', 'Most Wanted', 'Palladium', 'In Love With You' or even 'Rubicon' and Justice members Xavier and Gaspard wanted to produce something in homage to him since he had a prolific impact on the duo's music, he even remixed their hit, 'D.A.N.C.E.', on an EP release so there's clearly love between the two acts and I'd like to share a few words from Xavier about Alan he told while interviewed.
Xavier: "It's more of an inside joke than anything, but in the realm of electronic music, he's been an inspiration for us from the beginning. He's always had this kind of melancholic thing to his music that a lot of other bands from the French touch first wave don't really have. For us, the [music] is more like shiny club music that's very euphoric. Alan Braxe was always a bit less dance-oriented but a bit more melancholic and elegant in a way, and that touches us a lot more than straight dance music."
'Dear Alan' uses a sample of "Dear Brian" by Chris Rainbow. The sampled song is a tribute to Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. "For a long time, the working name of our track was 'Dear Brian' and when we had to give it a proper name, we were like the vocal sample reminds us of Alan Braxe, let's call it Dear Alan. It's a way for us to pay tribute to Alan Braxe and also Chris Rainbow."
The sample is very well reworked into something more melancholic and the choice even of the sample is smart because it's a vocal sample that can be listened to for hours and hours while not necessarily getting tired of it and it has that audio effect from the early days of radio with that crackling sound you can hear and the analogue feel to it, for sure this song was produced in a way to replicate the old school sound of the 70s and 80s even plus the choice of using a Chris Rainbow sample is well picked because he has a very interesting sound when it comes to his vocal performances and collaborations he's done particularly with the Alan Parsons Project.
My remix of 'Dear Alan' is very different from the original song, I was envisioning a more dance-oriented version of the song with new drums, a pitch change, some warping and a few cut ups but the idea was to make a club remix of 'Dear Alan' and make it fun. The new drums are techno-based and work well over the tune, I edited the arpeggiated notes as well into different sections, the live section that is heard in the song was left just as is only the pitch changed and I did a few minor edits but I love it just as it is and it needs some finger snaps to give it a disco-tinged feel, I also used a 909 drum loop in the middle of the song and the outro uses the opening drums but I definitely like my remix of 'Dear Alan', it's definitely more club-oriented but it still works for what I envisioned, I also used a few effects on the song to boost it make it sound louder and grander and my job here was done after that.
I really like the original song and my remix is also great and I dedicate this remix to all the Alan's in the world as well as my loved ones, it's a remix that is close to my heart and I was very happy with the end result on its production and its sound too, it's a good remix and I feel like it'll rest well with time and be appreciated as a dope rework, I love it as Fluence and I'm interested to see my remixing journey evolve further and further as a musician.
Thank you Justice and thank you also to Alan Braxe.
