Why would we try to make people feel bad about being frugal and saving money? There's nothing wrong with being careful sbout your money. I admire the older lady in the video.
At her age, she doesn’t want to spend $200 on a blouse. What’s wrong with that? She can afford but don’t want to. But this who can’t afford who buy is a bigger issue
@@okay_then3337how it goes… the first generation builds wealth, second generation maintains it, third generation squanders it. Her daughter is definitely the third one in this story!
The older woman makes more sense than the guy who wrote the book! I’m with her not him! Earn your money, SAVE some, spend some, and yes treat yourself once in a while, but I’d never spend $200 on a blouse! I can afford but I wouldn’t. Saving money is great obviously you will need it. I wouldn’t buy his book but I’d sit down with the older woman any day to listen to her wisdom!
I am a multi-millionaire with no debt. I am petite and physically cannot eat more than 10 dollars of food per meal, some of my favorite summer dresses are from Target and I drive an older car (thieves in my neighborhood have been breaking in to nearby houses to steal keys to expensive new cars.) I am happy and I sleep well at night. No matter how rich I get, I will never buy a $200 blouse because it violates my sense of value.
soo ?? she doesn't need a blouse to stay alive. its justs frivolous. if she doesn't think its worth it then she is not forced to spend money. i am sure she is much more comfortable with a ton of money in her bank account.
I'm a saver, too. I think a common denominator among savers is contentment. If you're not content, you can not save because there will always be something else to buy to "satisfy" your greed.
Real relevant reporting. Most are living paycheck to paycheck, with little to nothing for retirement. But, over-saving is something that is a big problem. How about you tell people how to budget so that they can avoid the much more common problem.
It’s harder for the retired on a fixed income to dip into savings. You just don’t know how long you’ll live for and you want your money to last but also enjoy it. Very difficult
There's no stress in saving at all - it's hustlers like Sethi who would like us to believe that erroneous concept . You don't have spend just because you have money ; I think if only there is a genuine reason or need one should spend .
If you’re living a lower quality of life because you’re afraid to spend - wearing threadbare clothes, eating cheap ultra-processed food, driving a death trap, you’re unnecessarily depriving yourself.
I cannot see how anyone can save TOO MUCH! There are always unplanned emergencies......If you have to much saved...then give it away to the right organization or non-profit.
Seriously, it's going to make more sense to talk about those who live paycheck to paycheck and don't have at least $500 saved for an emergency rather than talk about those who "over-save". At least those who "over save" have sufficient funds for unexpected emergencies and have plenty invested in retirement.
The whole video is based on "matter and money". Did not touch upon any spiritual leanings .... things that money cannot buy!! A bit shallow I think. Maybe Grandma has it right, that spending on things that she does not really need, for a high $$ amount, is not going to buy her Happiness. Good old fashioned values. Nothing to do with stress. Sethi needs to evolve his thinking outside of materialism. My 2 cents.
Yes and no. The materialism is a part of it, but the emotional blockage from knowing if you can’t bring yourself to spending that money at her age means you are undeserving your entire life of ever buying that item because of its price of all things and not the actual item is another.
I love saving wherever whenever possible lol. I choose to look for the best price. Some clothes cost an arm and a leg and is plain as Jane. I bet that sweater isn’t worth $200.
@@taffyalusa4642 I enjoy thrift shopping in NYC, or parts of L.A. too (the fun is in the search), ………but I also just bought a gold Cartier Tank watch, and spent 2 glorious weeks in the Hamptons. You’ve got to ENJOY the money too (you’re going to be dead eventually!)
@taffyalusa4642...I'm not a millionaire but I can comfortably afford what I want. I just bought a used coffee table for $90 off FB Marketplace and a sofa under $400 on Amazon. There is a freedom to having but not wanting that many people will not experience because their value of themselves is in what they own.
'Over-saving is stressful'? LMAO! I decided to work only long enough (~20 years) to live modestly and on my own terms and die with no money in the bank. Life is too short to work anymore of it than absolutely necessary.
I wouldn't spend $200 on a blouse either. It's not about a fear of not having in the future, I just don't value a piece of clothing that much. I don't value most material items enough to spend exorbitant money on them. However, if the elderly lady can bring herself to fund that family vacation, I think that she will really enjoy that.
@@chrisphilips2768 Inflation in the US is the lowest compared to all other developed nations, Biden has been doing a great job with our economy. You can't make the inflation 0%.
but anyways i have dealt with oversaving by only allowing myself to spend 1% of all my money each month. So if i have 100k i could spend a thousand a month and so on. Because then if i ran out of money i would only need to worry about it within 8 years and cause i enjoy the consistency of always having a set amount i can spend each month and a ton of money leftover.
My grandfather had saved a TON of money, he hoarded it, and died without spending much of it. Now my 86 year old father has it……..I’m VERY careful dealing with my father, the trust can be changed. 🤷🏼♂️🤔
This story is supremely tone deaf. I suspect the vast majority of people in this country do not want to hear about these kinds of so-called "problems."
I took a proverbial leaf out of Suze Orman's book. Savings should be 6 months to one year for your salary or wages. Unfortunately I don't have that. Yet!
I have been oversaving practically my entire life. Heck even when I play video games I oversave the in-game currency lmao. I won't lie and say it hasn't affected me since for example unlike my peers I travel maybe once every 5 years but the nice thing about being an over-saver is that when I want to buy something under $100 I always do without worrying about my bank account. Personally, I do it out of fear of my future retirement and potentially becoming homeless but I feel its extremely common for older people to save simply because they want their kids to inherit more.
Don't listen to this guy. Save your money? Spend your money? Do what makes sense to you. Just be smart. Don't count on anyone but yourself. Kids, dont feel obligated to take care of your parents just because they brought you into the world. Do it if you want to, because it makes you feel good. Because you have a good relationship with them. Don't put yourself in a situation where you can't spend. Debt is rampant. Credit cards are only good if you can take advantage of their perks, not if they take advantage of you.
Sethi’s advice is, as usual, wide of the mark. Buying everything I like that is within whatever “worry free” number I decide will make me either broke, fat, or a hoarder.
The United States is a consumer based economy, meaning if people don't spend money and save money the economy will stagnate. Businesses close down if people don't spend, spending makes the economy go round not saving.
We've been taught by social standards to always want and get bigger and better, more and more. By doing this we are destroying the very planet we live on.
This advise comes from a worldly perspective and pure nonsense. I rather follow the ageless advise of the Bible - Proverbs 13:22 Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren, but the sinner’s wealth passes to the godly.
@chrisphilips2768 Whatever you say Grampa. Give the nice nurse her phone back. You know they don’t like it when when you post rambling incoherencies online. If you hurry, you can still catch the rest of the Lawrence Welk Show and get a serving of rice pudding! By now! 👋
If you get to a point where you are over saving.......... CONGRATS, you've won the game of life. You can live on your own terms.
I don’t think this is a very common problem in our country 😂
Right lol. Our media is the absolute worst. They want everything in the market.
This is a solution in search of a problem. Not buying a $200 blouse is not deprivation.
This type of mindset continues to fuel capitalism and overconsumption
