  • It takes more than just a Level 1 Certificate to run a successful CrossFit affiliate. In this series, learn about the various ways affiliate owners and trainers evolve and plan as they work to lead the fitness industry.
In Part 5, the conversation continues as CrossFit Inc.’s Tyson Oldroyd discusses hiring new coaches with Pat Burke of MBS CrossFit, CrossFit Verve founders Matt and Cherie Chan, Nicole Christensen of CrossFit Roots, and David Tittle of CrossFit Low Oxygen.
In addition to discussing onboarding processes, the six debate whether it’s better to hire from the outside or develop someone in the gym community.
Matt Chan recommends finding an athlete others in the gym gravitate toward and sending him or her to the CrossFit Level 1 Certificate Course. That’s the first step in developing a good trainer, he says.
Tittle says the most important thing is “finding somebody that cares” and is passionate.
Christensen agrees: “It’s the person that’s passionate about CrossFit in regard to helping others.”

When I worked at a gym, I saw both. When you teach classes and see those who are dedicated to the class, have respect from others that go to the classes, and have a personality that the class can mirror, I think its a great thing. People already have the respect from them and they also know the structure of the classes. I think it creates a good relationship with the gym and trainer!

I just wanted to say that as an athlete who has decided to take L1 and move into the realm of trainer, this information is applicable on multiple levels. So thank you.

Matt Chan brought it to point! Great speech! I wish "those" trainers and gym / cluster managers have a good self-reflexion, think about it and change "the bad into the good"...

rare when i comment, and im no way trolling, but there are far too many uneducated coaches out there.
In my personal experience i have seen lots of people injure them selves. But crossfit would be unaware as these people then do not return.
So the box will just think that they no longer want to take part and are unaware of why.
I think that there should be some chase up procedure, where when someone no longer returns you have to find out why.
And when you can see that it is from injury the individual boxes can have a good strong look at the quality of their coaches.
Appreciate that injury can come from out of the box and work or lifestyle related. But from the people i have seen have had some serious injuries,
people do not like to complain but that information needs to get back into the system to help educate and prevent others from injury.

Matt Chan.. you mentioned that you would send someone to the L1... who pays? Them, you, or split?

Sorry for the late reply... we (the gym) would send them and ask for X amount of hours in return.

While this has been useful and informative, and while I have loads of respect for the affiliate owner (former and present) represented, I can't help wanting to hear from affiliate owners in different parts of this and other continents, is that on CrossFit Media's radar?
