I was rooting for Ding the whole way through, but, seeing Ian’s reaction. His shaking hands, his exasperated sigh as he sat up then slumped in pure exhaustion and devastation, it was utterly heartbreaking. Im so happy for Ding, i love that the guy i was rooting for won, but the soul crushing display of Ian’s emotional state was truly felt
Same
same
I felt that. I thought he was having a panic attack. The way he fumbled with pieces was so sad to see
Don't feel sad for chokers . If he actually ate healthy instead of eating pizza all day maybe he would have the brain capacity to play well in the toughest moments.
@@Fraudkovic what the fuck is wrong with you? He trained so hard to reach the world championship match for the second time, and then he lost it because of time struggle. You don’t have any ground to say anything because you’d never get close to accomplishing what he has.
From barely making it to the candidates and fighting visa issues, to fighting his way from dead last in the tournament to having to beat Hikaru to make it to 2nd, even in the match, his prep got leaked, he never had the lead and was pretty much always a game away from sudden death, to winning it all in the end, Ding’s story is amazing
And also the time freeze
He still got nerve in that “self pinning to immortality” move. It completely shocked Ian and 99% of others.
Fuck Ding.
Ding story can be a manga by itself.... Tbh, since I followed chess in 2018, I really like Ding Liren, but never in my mind I would see him winning the World Chess Championship. He went unbeatable in 2019, I know, but I never predicted a champion
Also his past... (levy made a vid on it)
I will forever remember Ian's shaking hands shoving the pieces off the table in the final few moments of the last one. I've been backing Ding since Game 1, but both the players have played so incredibly well. It was an amazing display of sportsmanship. What a time to be alive and to witness this :)
One of the few times where I expected a competitor to just walk off without shaking hands, and it would've been understood by all. But Ian really showed class throughout.
Yeah that last look on the camera with a devastated expression before making his last move is just so heart breaking when I was watching it on live.
Poor nepo, however, I have a feeling that over the next few years the Champion title will fluctuate, so I wouldn’t count him out yet. Ding really prove himself this tournament, but at the same time I don’t think he is as dominantly superior like Magnus.
Real emotion there
me too. as soon as ding played that bishop move that he knew would spell the end, he just fell apart for a moment, followed by ding knocking a couple pieces over himself out of disbelief/joy/relief. I was lucky to tune in just for the last half of that game!
The video were Nepo’s hands were shaking and the pieces dropped absolutely broke my heart. Congratulations to Ding for a phenomenal series and to Nepo, keep your head up high, and come back next year!
Maybe that will teach him to not be so fucking rude. Wanted to see that fattie going out crying
This championship is as iconic as Levy's ability to make his opponents resign with his spine chilling stare

"Say my name"
Ding chilling
Ding's journey is just incredible.
From being unable to qualify for the candidates, to playing tournaments for a month straight to be a replacement candidate, to scraping second place, to second place being enough when Magnus gave up his title, to being down a point for most of the classical games, to playing that rook move with 1 minute on the clock. He didn't sacrifice the rook but it sure felt like it.
Fair to say he deserves it.
Couldnt agree more ☝
He definitely didn't deserve it, nor did Ian. You call qualifying for the Candidates by replacing a banned player a normal path to the WC?
He perfectly emobied the latin saying "audentes fortuna iuvat": Fortune favors the bold. Throughout this match he went for so many different variations and managed to hold so many untenable situations, truly spectacular.

absolute balls of steel from Ding to reject the draw by repetition when down on the clock and with so little time left. insane moment. the dramaturgy of this match was unbelievable and the finale was worthy of the series.
Showed fantastic character and self belief amazing story of his victory
main character moment
so why did Nepo want a draw if he was winning?
where was he winning? did you watch the recap? the game was pretty balanced if played perfectly by both, if anything Ding had the initiative with the extra pawns and a very slight advantage. Nepo offered draw by repetition, Ding took a chance (he easily could loose on time) and rejected it. Neither played very accurate after that as they were in time scramble but it was Nepo that made a blunder which allowed decisive game result. Nepo was not winning, he clearly wanted to close this game and move on to second round of tie-breakers, where many think he would have the advantage as he is generally considered better at speed chess than Ding.
well, one reason is that he knew he would lose in blitz, Ian is way better in 5+3 format than him so he had to gamble it all with the last rapid game to have a winning chance
Two years back I would have never thought waking up at 3:00 a.m to watch a chess match, and it was totally worth it.

I wonder if Magnus may try to retake his title at some point. Hell, maybe he declined to defend just so he could prove that he could climb back up through the candidates and win it back. I broke into tears when I saw the handshake in the rapid game 4. It was so tense. Both players were just absolutely throwing everything they had at each other. Yea fr
He is clearly the better and more consistent player
But not when the stakes are so high
@@talosgak1236 Ding is more consistent he makes less acruacys then nepo playes faster and maked blunders
@@talosgak1236 Ian maybe the more favorite one but this kind of match will magnify player's weakness to another level. Whoever can contain weakness wins. Ding's sheer willpower, willing to play more aggressively, insane resilience & recovery just outweighed Ian.
@@talosgak1236 Biggest problem for Nepo is that he often plays too fast in critical positions. He can play brilliantly first, but then just make few too fast inaccurate moves and suddenly lose the game. If not for that, he would have certainly won at classical, just too many too quick moves in bad spots. For Ding it was the other way, he spent way too much time often trying to calculate lines but at the end making often the obvious move, even when it was not the best and then ending up in time trouble.
But Ian is not better most of the games he won was because of Ding’s time crunch. That last game proved that Ding was clearly better
I cried watching this live, the heartbreak for Ian and the relief for Ding were visceral to witness... I love Levy's recaps because he manages to recapture and express all the emotions. What an unbelievable match.

@@the_bottomfragger Same. It just comes with the territory of being a competitive game, there can only be one winner. Both of them absolutely deserved the title. And as nice as it is to see a deserving man win, it's just as heartbreaking to see another deserving man lose. 💔
Same. It stunned me into a reaction less state
He stared at the camera with hollow eyes and I forgot that I've been supporting Ding the whole time.
The psychology behind this match... maybe this will make it easier for us to understand why Magnus grew tired of going through it. Tough draws with Caruana, great games against Anand and even when he won Nepo and it seemed like Nepo fell apart a bit there, that too must not have felt good, even if you end up winning. After all that even winning might start tasting a bit sour.

It’s frustrating hearing people say that Ding “isn’t the real champion”.
Ding has no control over what Magnus does. No matter who won this tournament, they would’ve had to deal with that ridicule; forced to adopt the people’s neutered title. Ding is absolutely the champion. What is a champion? Going through the stress of the world championship, having much go wrong throughout this year and still fighting through to the bitter end. He beat Ian at his best. That’s a Champion.
Magnus forfeited the title, he didn’t play. Maybe he would’ve won, but he didn’t. Put yourself in Dings shoes, working to the bone just for people to say “but yeah the other guy didn’t show up, so you’re the fake champion.” Infuriating.
He has the title, he is the world champion. It’s a FIDE title, not a chess title. You don’t give someone credit if they don’t play.

I thought he threw the wc for sure when he went for it. Like shit nepo has 3x his time left, and it was a sharp af endgame with queens on the board, NOT something u wanna play with a minute on the clock on the final tiebreaker game of the world chess champoinship. What a fucking gigachad
Crazy to think Ding wasn't supposed to be in world chess championship at the start but he made it out and came on top, congratulations to the new chess champion 👏
I went dark to avoid ANY spoilers for the winner, I charged my phone, and waited for Levy, this was incredible, INCREDIBLE!! Thanks for your coverage Levy, it’s a good day in Chess for everyone (except Nepo)
Congrats to Ding, respect to Nepo!
As did a lot of other chess fans. I wonder if Lucy cried in joy, at the end. Same with Richard Rapport. This will probably be Nepo's last chance at the title. Too many rising stars in the game, and who knows if Hikaru will buckle down and make one more attempt. The next qualifiers' tournament should bring out Fabi, as well.
@@alohamark3025 agree, nepo might not have another shot
Was rooting for nepo the whole time
Sad to see him loose 😔
It’ll be a miracle if nepo is able to get wcc again next year, kinda hoping it happens and nepo has a comeback!
I think Nepo showed so much mental fortitude this time compared to his first attempt that I can only hope he progresses even higher from here. But... this will hurt a lot, will he be able to still overcome all of this? And naturally competition will get even more fierce from now on.
@@FreeMe64O you mean a miracle like getting crushed after 5 and a half perfect games against magnus? That was such a tough loss and still he went on to dominate the next candidates. You never know 🤷♂️
Ah man, should've caught the livestream in the moment
I loved the part where Ding said "It's Ding Chilling time" and Ding Chilled all over the chess board. Truly one of the chess moment of our generation.
He google En Passant
Yes
GET BETTER JOKES!
The match ended less than an hour ago, Levy's ability to make these videos this fast is truly amazing, and congratulations to Ding, this WCC was a rollercoaster
Next year's candidates would be very spicy. Magnus finally be an underdog for a first time vs WC veteran Nepo, battle-hardened Ali. Maybe Hikaru, Anish, Fabi would tag along. Maybe even Vishy and Karjakin will join the fray.
And don't get me started on young Indian/Uzbek/Azerbaijan players, next year could be their breakthrough year to candidates.
I remember it was you Levy, last year,, who said something about like everything was working towards Ding being a champion, like fate, the stars, etc despite Ding having a lot of obstacles like covid, restrictions, lack of qualifying games, travel problems etc, during his journey towards the candidates. You were truly correct
Every step of the way, Ding was stopped in some way shape or form, but against every single odd - he's still won! Not even stockfish could predict that - that's the beauty of human chess, it allows for errors and mistakes. What a shape it would be if we hadn't seen this story for the centuries unfold - well done ding, and my condolences to Nepo.
“My only regret is that I did not play Magnus and Ian at the same time.” - King Liren
Good one
You're so right, Levy. Ding's journey to becoming a world chess champion would make a great movie. The championship match itself would make a thrilling movie! Congrats to Ding, and wishing Ian the best!!
Gotham: Do you blunder your Queen?
Me: ALWAYS!
What a game holy wtf. What a rollercoaster of emotions, congratulations to Ding and what a performance from Ian just incredible.
"Ding Winning"
-Sun Tzu
What a crazy moment. The way Nepo was shaking as he made his final move, after knocking over some pieces on the side of the board - I can’t imagine the nerves. Well done Ding!
And when Ian was getting up he almost tripped.
From the live analysis they explained why he didn't take the pawn at 10:50 - black has Rb5, which would seal away the bishop. Black cannot take the rook because after the pawn recaptures the knight is trapped. It might be okay to have the bishop there, but it wouldn't be pleasant.
DING HAS IMPRESSED ME SO MUCH OVER THE YEARS WITH HIS ATTACKING PLAY SO GLAD HES WON !!!!
I am happy for Ding but man that was such a heartbreaking loss for Ian..
This championship was more than deserved for the player who made the most wonderful plays at the most opportune moments. Congratulations to Ding on this well-deserved victory
The insane part about the way Ding played in this championship is like he was generally worse in most of the games, and the games that he tied and won to bring it back were like actually genius moves at the end that made his position almost look worse, but ended up preventing a loss.
It looked like Ian was nearly impenetrable until the end games where Ding comes out of nowhere with 3 insane end game moves in a row. Great Chess.
Ding is literally my favourite, I'm so happy that he won, but it was heartbreaking that Ian lost, probably one of the greatest matches ever played, absolutely loved it till the end...
It's insane how Ding refused a draw by repetition in a losing position with less time on that last match and ended up winning
Truly unbelievable. From not even supposed to be there. To World Champion. Rook to G6 has to go down as one of the most clutch plays in a World Championship. Incredible steel from Ding all the way through the time complications of earlier games, making the comeback to force a tie-break, and ending up winning the last game of rapid with Black! Simply incredible, well done to Ding, and a hard fought Championship for Ian.
This Match will forever be remembered...
Congrats to Ding and all the respect in the world for Ian, such incredible play and sportsmanship!
Like Andrew tate, it will be remembered for generations
Thanks for all the recaps Levy! It's been a great comprehensive way to follow the WCC. I know you get shit on for your shouting or 'over the top' reactions but it's exactly what makes these videos great for me. The game of chess can be very exciting if you're way into it but that doesn't change the fact that it's still 2 dudes or chicks around a board that play in silence. In terms of excitement outside of the game itself, it doesn't compare to a sport with an engaged crowd, that cheers, sings and yells whenever some spectacular move happens. Chess is very complicated so I really enjoy the fact that you are my crowd for these games, leading me into the excitement or tense moments which I still have a hard time to predict or understand. With football I can understand a counter, in MMA you just see when someone is rocked and almost down. This kind of engagement sometimes takes a little longer to settle in with chess, if you're
Im rooting for Ian, and watching him push off the pieces off the table when he realised he's lose i felt the pain. Im happy for Ding but im still heart broken for Ian
Huge Congratulations to Ding Liren! He was in dire straits throughout Games 13-14 but managed to draw, leading to the tiebreak games and he's mostly in a worse position in Game 2... but drawn. And yes, Rg6!! in 25:18, a very, very courageous decision that I and a lot of people would of Kg8 ... Ding's persistence pushed him to victory and it's a valuable lesson for us to learn from him as well. Once again, Congrats Ding🏆! And thanks Gotham for pulling out this recap less than an hour after it's announced.
I didn't care about Ding before but He was immediately my favorite because of his story leading up to this championship. What a guy. 👍
🎉
What is the story?
Levy thank you so much for making these world chess championship recap videos. They were by far my favorite chess videos I've seen and I've never been this excited over chess in my life. Thank you for all that you do.
i love Ding..but my heart broke for Nepo...you could see his hand trembling..and the anguish on his face. what an incredible world championship and final match. there are no losers today
I'm so happy that Ding Liren was able to overcome every single trial ahead of him and pull through in the final moments of this match. It was truly an incredible journey and a fantastic win. I respect the hell out of Ian and it hurts to see that one of them had to lose. This match was incredible
So goddamn happy for Ding. Although I was rooting for him, still heartbreaking to see Ian's reaction. Absolutely mad chess
Yes bro i wanted ding to win
Ding’s story is truly amazing, and so is Ian’s,both are unbelievably great at the game of Chess
Fair play Ding. Incredible performance through adversity.
And now I thank Levy. You have given us such joy for years, but this recap of the WCC has been absolutely sensational. Thank you ❤
I started the championship rooting for Ian, but Ding’s playing style and his wholesome personality engrossed me and I had no choice but to root for Ding
A true tale of the underdog that were never meant to play, becoming world champion.
Truly amazing, I were cheering for him the whole way through.
"My pawn's hanging.... So... I'm gonna move it... World chess championship solved" 😂😂😂
#1 Chess TH-camr for so many reasons.
This has been the first world championship of chess i have cared about watching, and you made it so great and entertaining to watch, adding information outside of what's on the board, related to the players, etc. Thank you for casting/recapping what otherwise would be some awesome and interesting ultra highstakes matches that i wouldnt have watched.
Honestly I didnt root and cheer anyone in a chess match, but the end where Nepo lost, the devastating face he carried with me having a flashback of previous championship, made me cry :(
Not like he deserves or not as, but seeing him ruined was so heartbreaking
Anyway, congrats Ding for becoming the New World Chess Champion and I hope Nepo will comeback next year 💪
Ian grabbing the pieces at the end and them falling around hit hard
I felt Nepo's reaction when he lost in my bones, absolute heartbreak
Just be better
@@BausFan I imagine it's Ding himself who posted this comment
