Fastpacking the MOUNTAIN route of the CUMBRIA WAY #1

  • Iconic Lakeland trail, but what about the mountain route? Having previously completed the classic Cumbria Way, I now venture into the mountains to follow the Mountain route. This is also my first attempt at Fastpacking, lighter load and faster pace results in a transverse of 3 days to complete the journey. This video is day one and overcomes the tricky navigation on the first few miles and an ascent of Coniston Old Man and a few other Wainwrights in the surrounding fells.

I remember wild camping at the top of goats water at Goats Hause when I did the mountain route a couple of years back. The views were stunning. Gonna do the standard route in early February. Can’t wait!

Incidentally, have you considered the Cape Wrath Trail? I did it March just gone. What an adventure that was!

Sounds great! Not actually done a wild camp in that area but could definitely see the possibilities. I think it's an area that is generally undiscovered, most just head for the Old Man, certainly got me thinking. I've done the standard route one November and that is the great thing about the CW, the paths are generally good regardless of the weather. Also a bit of a coincidence, I'm actually editing a video at the moment for publication on 17th Oct re 'Trail Review of the Cumbria Way', which might be helpful for planning. Best of luck with the Feb adventure.

I was supposed to be walking the Cumbria Way in just under 2 weeks time as the first walk of many in a 3-month U.K. holiday, but, because of a couple of factors, there has been a major overhaul to my plans. Currently I'm back walking in Shropshire for 3 weeks instead, which is very likely my last visit to the U.K. ever, so this video is somewhat apt in showing me what I would have been doing.

Sorry to hear about your holiday overhaul, hopefully Shropshire delivers what you are looking for. Part two of this series is out tomorrow at 4pm and the final the following. As it happens, I’ve also done the classic route of the Cumbria Way in addition to the Mountain route and that’s a four part series on the channel. Hope all works out fine for you and you still enjoy the trails of Shropshire. Let me know if you come across any good trails to film, always on the lookout for new ideas. Also, interested in international recommendations. Cheers

@@AmblingTrails Nigel, I did reply to you here some time ago, but it seems it wasn't posted. I was going to suggest you walked Lady Anne's Way (my favourite U.K. walk so far) through the Yorkshire Dales (it takes in some of the Dales Way and the Dales High Way). As for international trails, now that I am back in New Zealand, I could recommend Te Araroa, the 3000km route from top to bottom of the country.

Thanks for posting this. I’ve had a couple of recommendations for Lady’s Ann Way so it is certainly on my list. I retired just one month before Covid hit

Apologies, actioned reply before finished. Covid hit and my plan had been to go to NZ for the trail. UT became my Covid project and grew from there. Since then, many other things have developed and I do hope one day to make it to NZ. Thanks for supporting the channel, Nigel

Hi, enjoyed the video. I am going to be doing the Cumbria Way mountain route. Was trying to decide what camera equipment to take. What did you take to film?

In this instance I was travelling light so just had an action camera Insta 360 GO 3 and my iPhone mini 13. Normally, would have a Sony 6400 as well. Hope you enjoy the route it’s one of my favoured trails. Cheers, Nigel

Thanks that helps. Also what do you use for post processing your videos and photos. Looking forward to watching your coast to coast videos.

For video I use Final Cut Pro X on my iMac although currently investigate using on iPad. I only take photos for Instagram and edit within iPhone app.

Fastpacking sounds like hard work. Fair play to you for giving it a go. Personally I`m happy to keep ambling. Sounds like an interesting route. Any plans to do a kit review, or maybe a kit comparison between your normal kit and your fast pack kit. I`m interested in tips to help shave a little weight and like many others am just plain nosey. Looking forwards to next instalment.

Don’t worry, after that experience I certainly will be still ambling, but like you say it was worth a go to force me to shave further on the kit front. Yes I’m planning a What’s in my Fastpack (or not!) video for after the series has finishes. Thanks for the interest and I hope you enjoy the rest of the series.
