Cape Town residents must now live with just 50 liters each day, which is barely enough for a shower. What about resource management do you think we can learn from South Africa's situation?
Humanity needs to wake up and realize we're in this together and that the little worlds we made for ourselves will all mutually be destroyed if we don't humble ourselves and cooperate beyond surface level niceties and delusional supremacy paradigms. Americans won't realize the global privilege they have until it's gone and when that moment comes no amount of retrospect will save us. Good outcomes come when you use the resources you have NOW.
20 years ago "BEYOND 2,000" reported from Australia a recycling water system that only utilizes BACTERIAS and reverse osmosis to purify water in households, BUT SINCE THEM, NO MORE NEWS ABOUT IT, it just dissappear from media... What happened?
what is not mentioned is the poor infrastructure of the waterworks in Cape Town . Million litres of fresh water is wasted bc leaking water pipes and other infrastructure problems !
This is really sad. I hope the government and experts take a positive working plan to resolve this issue. 50 liters a day is just too little for any good use, except for urgent necessities. I hope the people of Cape Town stand strong in facing this crisis. Thanks National Geographic for sharing.
Thanks for your supportive comment, Azlian 😊. As a Cape Town resident, Im able to make due with 50 litres per day, however, my house mate and I supplement our drinking, teeth brushing and food prep water with Newlands spring water 😏 We use grey water to flush the toilet, etc. Water tank to capture rain water. It is possible.
Azliana Lyana in mexico my grandparents make do with about 5 gal or 18 liters a day, sometimes less. So its not impossible with 50 liters. People just forgot how to use water, its sad.
Just came back from this beautiful city. It wasn't actually as bad as they're making it seem. It is a big problem but we managed to stay under the limit quite comfortably. and now I'm back in my country and I'm continuing the short showers, the buckets, the scarce flushes. We take water for granted and there's absolutely no reason not to be careful.
Jeremy McReynolds yet there are MANY foreigners who come and live here for between 3 months and a half a year and they adopt all our methods of saving water, so for the tourists it is easier but for those foreigners living here, they make sure they comply to our ways of living
Jimmie Lovett they're building one, but because they started it a bit too late, it's unclear whether or not it'll be completed in time before day zero, plus, the sa government making it difficult for them to get the needed funding (last time i heard about it), saying the cape town gov is making this whole crisis up.
400,000 gallons is 1,500,000 litres. On average, with most of the population consuming 50 liters per day, Cape Town uses 500,000,000 litres per day! Do you see the dilemma here?
Jimmie Lovett says: "Build a Desalination plant. An Aircraft carrier can produce 400,000 gallons of fresh water per day." == Every big boat has one. Not clean enough for the drinking, not enough amount to be used by the crew. It's only used for cooling the engine. They would load the water for the human consumption at each port they stop. It uses a lot of energy, that means promoting more climate change, which promotes more water shortage. You can't win.
Greg Brance well it was only their desalination plant blue prints but there are many models out there and it was really about what’s going on in Israel.
Dear "H J" : What's going on on ISRAEL? A yijadist group against the only Democratic Country in Middle East: ISRAEL. Whats going on in AFRICA? A yijadist group called Boko Haram; blacks killing blacks... But... Why declining help or advice from ISRAEL? Because ISRAEL cannot be controlled by intolerant Yihadists, and the Yihadists HATES stronger than they LOVE their own people. wgt
This is gonna happen at many other places as well...We humans have been so irresponsible in using the natural resources...This day had to come and it may get worse because still many of us do not understand the gravity of the situation. the damage we have done to the ecosystem and environment will come to haunt us in a big way.
How wonderful mother earth is, her strategy of educating humanity through discipline is unfolding. I mean this not as a personal attack on Cape Towns residents, but mother earth is not interested in who or where, as unlike the average person, mother earth sees us all equally.
The same thing happened in Delhi, India, and water supply from other states was given to it. "Water, water, every where, And all the boards did shrink; Water, water, every where, Nor any drop to drink. " Moreover cape town is known as cape of good hope, so it will be able to survive this.
In Sydney we have a desalination plant designed to provide us with water in the event of severe drought, which has occurred many times before. Its not in use always, just there is we need it. Although it costs alot to maintain.
I've experienced water disruption in my state that lasted almost a week, it ended a few days ago, but to me, I got to experience what these people is going through now, and I cannot imagine what it is for them to have to suffer day zero for such a long period.
While the situation in Cape Town is sad indeed, we hope this video will encourage individuals, communities and governments to think about how to better manage our natural resources.
The BDS movement is to blame. They boycotted Israel out of SA. A country which is amazing at dealing with water shortages and one which is willing to help
While cape town is drying out, Bandung, Indonesia is having floods. Is there a way for us to send our coulds to africa and for africa fo send their lights to SEA? Im joking but seriously, is it possible for is to send water?
We had a drought in Puerto Rico 2 years ago. The government funded the "planting" of clouds, artificially generating clouds so that the rain fell on the reservoirs. Also the water supply was controlled, 2 days with running water and 2 days without it.
I saw what appeared to be many houses with corrigated iron roofs. These could be turned into rainwater harvesters to provide water for general washing and biointensive kitchen gardens.
in to all the Cape Town residents, holds on guys it only six months left. in September this year God have promised to give u rain which will be enough for you to live your life's normal again.(4rm Mr Mpambosi)
Now I feel so thankful that I live in India where Water is in limitless amoumts due to the Himalayas amd our sacred rivers (which we should stop polluting if we are to continue this privilege)
In the next few decades when desalination plants become common place and cost effective, no coastal nation has to worry about water anymore. Landlocked countries have to buy/import water... so that would be expensive.
Why not set up plants to purify sea water and use it? The quantity of sea water is huge. It seems like the lines "water, water everywhere not a drop to drink".
I always laugh at these alarmists like the guy who says that this water shortage can happen to all of us. What? There is a country called Israel. Their country is a desert. Some areas are super dry. Drier than South Africa for sure. Yet they export water to neighboring countries like Jordan and have flourishing agriculture sector. With the current state of technology South Africa can cheaply produce so much desalinated water that they will be able to flood their whole country. There are ready solutions with fantastic success examples all over the world. The root of the South African water crisis is probably mismanagement or corruption.
Lol!! The location of Israel has always been fertile, it's literally in the fertile crescent. And don't pretend like Israel doesn't have its own water problems, it's also significantly smaller than S.A and has a crisis in the red sea which is dying as we speak.
The importance of water. One thing I lear during my travels in Senegal. Here in Europe we took everthing for granted. I hope everything's gonna be alright. Love.
I live in Cape Town. I shower every third day, brush teeth with a cup of water, wash my hair every three weeks, use dish water to flush my John and wear my clothes three days running. And yet I know that some people reading this will say “Dirty woman”.

Actually, most cities are far more efficient at using resources per larger number of people. Not that your solution isn't a viable option, because it is and more should.
I live in Cape Town and save water every single day in all ways . Also what they heard is that day Zero will be postponed to next year , is it true ?🌏💧Another thing is there is such a lot of dams here and we gave a lot of water when the other cities needed but theyre not helping us know that we gave up all our water I hope they make a plan 🙅
Caitlyn Wagner CW Asking for what is happening in your own city to some random people in TH-cam won't give accurate results. I bet there is plenty of local newspapers, magazines, radio and TV news, you can also google your city's name and click "news." You could ask someone around you. When a big city is going through such a crisis, the local media is bound to report on it. If you don't trust it, check international media, and see if there is coincidence. Reliable information exists.
The news the last few days has been hinting towards it, if we get early winter rains. But the experts reminded us in the news to continue saving, as Day Zero can still happen... today it's cloudy outside, and I'm really hoping for some rain.
Where was the government to prevent such crisis from happening? and awaring its citizens about the condition the city is going through? They seem surprised!!!
The problem with desalinization (the proper term for the process of removing salt from water.) Is that it requires A) a lot of energy or large solar arrays that are both expensive. B) The process currently creates almost always a sludge/water mix called a brine. The problem with this mixture is that its salt content is so high you cant release it into the ocean or fresh water. Also if I recall correctly the energy to transfer the water mix into a usable state is somewhat high. You could use the salts in a lot of industries problem is making it separate. Bottom line we need to curb our overall usage of clean water in developed countries.
Another problem with transferring ocean water is that if machines are placed to transfer water, you're sucking up the homes of local fish and organisms. Last time I checked, water turbines weren't working because they were killing fish. Same thing with wind turbines, killing too many birds.
Prince .R İt is indeed possible; but this amounts would be extremely expensive; more expensive than the corrupt South African Government's capable of paying
That shower in the beginning is a waste of time, some water ends up on the user, some in the bucket the rest disappears down the drain. Shower in the bath with a hand shower, direct the water where it's needed, then you can wash (properly) with as little as 10l, which can then be used to fill the toilet cistern. Desalinated water has its own issues, one need only research the health problems currently being experienced in Israel after decades of drinking sterile water, devoid of any minerals.
Please national geographic start a program for indian cities, people are unaware of the imminent danger and are misusing water and all natural resources
I have a REALLY good idea. Now hear me out: Put VALVES on those public water fountains where people are filling them up. It's like more than HALF of the water just goes on the ground.
After one wet winter last year, California is back in drought. The aquifer in the central valley has subsided by 2 meters in places. And yet we are still growing rice in the desert?
My town river is running useless in to sea ,would have been thinking that this running fresh water (really I mean u can drink it without filtering) could have saved south africans,I am feeling very bad about it.
But the guy said there is plenty of water underground, and the desalination plants haven't been built yet. Well, what's the problem? Who's lack of planning is this?
if water is so scarce, then y are they letting it just flow without any concern? I am talking about the time they are filling, there daily requirment of whatsoever litre cap set.
Meanwhile it rains everyday where I live. Thank the gods, my family is blessed. Not much food though. Plenty of internet so I hope nature molds my children to have the ability to eat radio waves or atleast get energy from photosynthesis.
We should all be saving water *as I take a 20 minute shower* (in JHB). But seriously, the comments I see on here blaming the government are silly. Cape Town has been in draught since 2015. Any city subjected to these conditions would suffer this way. Sure there is more the government could have done to mitigate against the effects, but expecting them to divert an act of God is ridiculous. Residents also have to take responsibility and realise that using endless amounts of fresh water like they did before is a privilege and not a right.
Cape Town residents must now live with just 50 liters each day, which is barely enough for a shower. What about resource management do you think we can learn from South Africa's situation?

The government should stop being corrupt and get their act together.
Mr. King Kitty Corruption isn't the issue in this case.
Incompetence more than corruption.
It's not political. In this case it's something natural
The greatest teacher ( nature ) giving her lessons.............
THANK YOU for some proper reporting. More of this style please.
Cape Town has no water but is hosting cricket matches on the contrary
Actually all local club cricket has been cancelled until the drought is over, it's too dangerous to play if the fields can't be maintained.
Exactly what I was wondering

No Western Cape is a DA run ward. They to blame
There are things that we do take granted... every single day.
Why don’t we use reclaimed water for our toilets ? 🤔. That is a good question
Cape Town already uses reclaimed water. Water gets cleaned at the Faure treatment plant. For more than twenty years now. Now everybody does.
Already happening here, it’s called grey water (reusable water) and black water (non-reusable water)
Why not use sea water for toilets? Cape Town has plenty.
"We've been living in a day zero fot many years"
Sad how people only pay attention when matters affect them directly.
It would Definitely Rain This Year For sure! Lets Pray
The Cape Town's government should take further action in growing up a natural resources and i.e a trees🌲

Biggest problem, too many people in an urban area. Move out to the country and become self sustaining. More small towns and less mega cities!

Actually we can, but in small scale. if we talk about city of course its hard and the price is very expensive.
