Wow man it’s amazing that within 2 days you can learn 40 minutes worth of complicated material and be able to play it in front of a huge crowd. You are ridiculously talented and disciplined.
How the fuck is it even possible to learn a 40 minute Periphery set in two days. That's a serious gift... and your balls must be huge... Nicely done. You're so right about P3 being intuitive. The first groove in Lune doesn't feel like I'm playing in 7's. It's got a feel of it's own that's really satisfying.
My band got to play Knotfest too, and we had the chance to watch your performance from the side of the stage (actually I'm one of the dudes on the back of the video, haha). You killed it, man! Respect!
I don't envy you but am incredibly impressed. As someone who's been to see Periphery a couple times, and a drummer, I've seen the shoes you had to fill. You filled them excellently
The crazy part for me (and this is what's beautiful about music) is that JP NAILS it but you can still tell the difference between him and Matt. It proves the point that music is so much more than notes and rhythms. It's about feel. They both have a feel and you can hear the difference.
Just goes to show how versatile JP is. Going from what ue usually plays to stepping up to Matt's plate and knocking it out of the ball park! Good shit man!
“I didn’t know this song was in the set list” man I felt that one... played a couple gigs where during soundcheck I’m handed the set list and I’m like???? we’re doing this song???? shit
@@andy_182 I play so many different songs with different people that it can totally happen. Even with my own band. If I haven't worked on a song for a while, it might not be in great shape. I don't make the setlists and they change from time to time.
It's interesting that you say that, because I've personally found Reptile to be one of Periphery's less difficult songs to learn on drums. Its by no means easy, but the patterns all came to me pretty quickly.
I've been asked to fill in for a band on drums on a way simpler scale, and even that was stressful. This guy is a machine to be able to actually work those parts out in like 2 days and even play them properly by the end, then still get on a stage and play them as tightly as he did. This is actually really inspiring.
This is just still one of the most insane musical achievements! The way the singer jumped up on that last song, he was saying how impressed he was with the comfort of the drums..just phenomenal!! Thanks for sharing this!!
This video is exactly what I needed right now. I’ve been struggling with a song for the past week or two, or rather the six last bars. At first it seemed easy enough, but as I started to listen closely and had it explained to me, I realized this isn’t in my usual repertoire. So for the first time in my drumming life, I had to write notes for the parts. At first they seemed impossible to get correct, but now they’re complete. To get to my point; this video made me feel like I really can accomplish this task. Seeing you learn all the songs was truly inspirational!
Dude, you freaking nailed it. For that level of preparation in that short of time, then to pull that performance? I know I'm 6 years late, but well done sir 🤘
You only have a couple of days to memorize and study these songs and I'm like listening to periphery for 5-6 yrs and yet i can't play a single song lol.
Its so so so so hard to recall info when you have thousands of people looking at you. Especially after learning it in a handful of days! PROPS PROPS PROPS. Dude, mad respect, regardless of the double bass flubbs. Big balls indeed.
Man ¡ im a super fan of periphery . I saw you live in México and you are an AMAZING drummer , the way you play those songs gave me goosebumps , all was perfect and spot on . now you have a new fan ...
Great video. I play with multiple bands and do subs, and as such, have lots of regular material to maintain and new material to tackle on a regular basis. Its great to know that full-on and well educated pros still have to put the work in and struggle like the rest of us. I think sometimes we lose sight of the fact that those we perceive as 'the masters' are still human, so thanks for walking us through that experience and your process as well. Killer job btw, and way to be humble, brotha. True class act!
My two favorite vlogs were def generation axe and this Periphery vlog. Animals as leaders and periphery being my two favorite bands it’s awesome how he documents this and shares it with the world and shows just how much work it takes to be a professional drummer no matter what it is. Clinician, studio session, in a band writing and composing, or filling in. Jp is a top notch player and just an all around cool ass dude.
21:47 - Exactly! There have been a couple of times when I've been asked to learn a cover or something a day before, listened to it and gone "nuh, uh, fuck that, I can't learn that it's far too technical" and then after the anxiety's gone away and I settle to learn it, I realize it seemed a lot easier than my ear told me.
Congrats JP. Your humility, appreciation for others' talents and helping a friend in need is quite admirable. I am also impressed at your ability to learn an entire set list in such a short time. You my friend are a true class act and a great role model for those that aspire to be musicians. All the best, Alex
Thank you so much for making this man. You've been such a huge inspiration for me for such a long time, not only as a player, but also as a simply great person. Love to see you go out of your comfort zone on this one! Thanks for everything.
20:20 that’s a great tip not just for drummers but even guitarists and bass players, once you learn the songs and they become second nature (if there’s enough time) practice the songs standing up or however you’re going to play them LIVE, hit as hard as you’re going to hit and move around, etc..that way you iron out the wrinkles
recently had to learn a 45 minute set of prog metal for an artist i'm filling in for this summer...took me about 4 weeks to get everything down sufficiently well. Doing this for periphery within like 3 days is absolutely mental, what a guy
honestly, I don't know who you are (yet) but after about 1 min of this video I've decided to subscribe cause this is my jam! drums, helping friends, learning how to memorize efficiently. so sick! keep it up
That was great. Awesome stuff! You're always your own worst critic and as long as you don't allow that to hinder your determination, I find that it's a good thing to help push me forward on my respective instrument. Be well man!
Really interesting, from start to finish. Great teaching, and obviously great performance. Been following your career since the Berklee audition videos! Keep on the amazing work.
Thank you for showing your process. It's refreshing to see a top tier drummer have to work on some parts rather than the standard impression most give off of being able to sit down and just nail everything. Amazing job in a crazy short amount of time!
