  • In this video I show you how to adjust velomobile front wheel alignment. I made my own tool to measure the alignment. My tool is kind of a hack, but I think it works. If you want proper tool for alignment measuring, ask from Velomobiel.nl.

For old velomobiles like my Alleweder, it makes difference if the bike is under load or not. For modern velomobiles like Strada, Quest QV and DF, there is no difference between loaded/unloaded adjustment. Therefor the tyre wear with the modern velomobile is much less than with my old Alleweder.

Thanks for this video Saukki. The simplicity and effectiveness of your jig has made me rethink my method. I look forward to watching more of your videos. You now have another subscriber.

Very grateful, Saukki, for all your service to the velomobile community to educate us on how to get the most from our machines. I'm awaiting delivery of a DF and will be referring to your videos to help maintain it.

Great video, Saukki. I did something similar with a metal gauge (which I also use for wheel trueing) but I like your method better. Happy velomobiling!

Your tool is brilliantly simple and effective. Unfortunately I haven't seen your video before I "invented" my own tool. I must admit, my tool is not such a bright idea as yours but nonetheless I made my own tutorial video of it.
I am not so lucky as to have neither toe in nor toe out as you found at your velomobile. And I found out that the effect of one turn of only one ball joint is much bigger than 1 mm at the wheels. It is actually about 4 mm. So I am out of tolerance whatever adjusting I try. Therefore I thought about a solution to do the wheel alignment continously and not stepwise as it is now.
Therefore I will cut a piece (about 43 mm) out of one of the steering track rods and replace it by a left-hand threaded rod of about 41 mm length. I screw the parts together with two female threaded carriage bolts (30 mm long) with right-hand threaded on one side (15 mm) and left-hand threaded on the other side (15 mm). Both connecting pieces of the left-hand threaded rod have to be secured by a nut (only 5 mm wide) from both sides to the right-handed parts of the original steering track rod with the ball joints.
If you adjust the wheel alignment then on one of the female threaded carriage bolts it will lengthen or shorten the steering track rod continously.
All this will fit easily and the parts can be ordered via internet for just few Euros.
May be you have a much better idea instead of this solution as well. I would appriciate it before I start the work.

Thanks for putting this video online. The technique and tool you used are fantastic, I can make something like this at home and see how my front wheel alignment is.

Good video Saukki, actually I think your invention works better than the one that Dronten supply! When you get your QV you will find it a bit more difficult though as the QV front wheels are less exposed (the ground clearance is lower than the Quest at the sides- but no chain tunnel) Even the Dronten tool for the QV(shorter) doesn't work very well but I'll try a version of your idea.

Thank much. Best explanation i have ever seen. Best vid of year in my opinion.
If possible, maybe (vid) how they do the rear wheel tracking & vertical some day.

Actually I shot a rear wheel alignment video as well, but I think I have to redo that, because I didn't measure the rear wheel tracking at all. So that video would be pretty useless.

Again a great video. Shouldn't you first check for any wheel wobble before measuring ?

You can also mount a left hand threaded ball joint for infinitiely variable adjustment of the alignment (see my blogpost on strada191.blogspot.com/2016/01/spoort-tante-lies-nog-wel-helemaal.html for this). I do like your alignment tool very much, because it's so simple, and although I have my own alignment tools, I'm going to copy yours too for a quick check of the alignment.
