Symbolizes the value of true love
Vijay is the supreme actor among those who graced this role. I've watched both tollywood and bollywood's version, though they somehow managed to capture the anger which Vijay potrayed in the first half, they both fell short in showing the pain and confusion in the redemption arc. Look how Vijay just with simple emotions convey his thoughts. Arjun is a complex character, an arrogant, possessive and in someway a conservative male and he is going through a transition, he is now becoming calm thinking about his life decisions. He prepares himself to love Preethi even she bears the child of an other person(which is not true as you know). He makes a huge leap from a guy who is mad at the love of his life for not defending him against her father to a man who is ready to love her forever although she's not his anymore. For this he has to prepare himself and Vijay shows this internal turmoil in his face. His acting clearly states the clouded mind of the protagonist. I personally feel this is what the film is about, more than about love, it is more of an redemption of an arrogant and selfish male to a calmer and selfless human being. This is indeed one of the best telugu films I've ever watched.
Edit: after 11 months of posting this comment I now realise that the director and Vijay both interpreted the character differently. From interviews of the director I indeed unterstand that he justifies the chauvinistic behaviour of Arjun. According to him true love is about not having any boundaries it seems, i beg to differ in that, Arjun's character is controlling, arrogant and the director doesn't create a troubled character instead he creates a character that might be a rendition of his beliefs. I am glad the discussion on misogyny came about, it explained many things to me. But the acting is incredible and I concur to all the things said above.
