It is the most advance 2x72 grinder that I have ever seen, and the designer and maker is a very professional and gentle person I have ever talk with. HJ, thank you for sharing, I just hope one day I can convince you to make me one, all the best and have a good day.

That is a beautiful machine!! ingenious! I am in the process of building a 2x72 now, but it wont be as versatile as yours! I'd love to have that many different attachments as well! Great work!

This is the best grinder on youtube and there many excellent grinders and designers here. Not to detract from them or their efforts, I think If you value versatility and are willing to put the time into this, anyone looking at building a 2x72 belt grinder should watch this. My favorite aspect is the the toolbar with the pillow blocks and traditional abrasive wheels powered by the abrasive belt itself. Brilliant! - opens a host of possibilities.
I really appreciate you sharing it in such detail with us. Making videos like this takes a fair amount of time so I think most people here really appreciate innovative people such as yourself generously sharing their knowledge. Thanks John!

Thanks for the favorable comment. I did a ton of research prior to building this unit. I think?????? that I looked at every possible TH-cam video as well as other resources on the subject. What you said about the toolbar with the pillow blocks on it is absolutely true. Grinding, Deburring, Sanding, Polishing, Buffing in either the horizontal or vertical position with a wide selection of contact wheels driven by a 2hp 3 Phase variable speed configuration that can run a 3 phase 1725 RPM motor at 3450 RPM from basic 220 Single Phase current is the Cats Meow!!!!! This is the MOST versatile tool that I have in my shop. That is why I called it the Ultimate Grinder. Ha Ha
The CAD/CAM files with associated pictures are FREE for the asking.

jimmy dahl Thanks for the favorable comment. My rotary platen design is what put the icing on the cake. Super easy to switch to different belt configurations. Vertical to Horizontal operation in seconds. The ability to add new tool bars as ideas for other operations are realized. The 2 X option on the motor control is super nice allowing a 1725 rpm 3 phase motor to run at 3450 rpm. Loads of torque and rpm i.e. the best of both worlds.

Your improved ultimate sander is amazing. I've been using a Wilmont LB1000 2x72 for about a year now which is a big improvement over the horizontal 4x24 oscillating sander I've had for 7 years. The rotary platen is the best improvement I can imagine. I think you've definitely invented a superior 2x72 sander.

Thanks for the favorable comment. I looked at a lot of videos and saw all of those tool bars and people building racks to hold all of them and I thought there must be a better way. My design on the rotary platen is the first of its kind and boy does it work nice. The spring loaded plunger pin makes it a snap to change contact wheel positions. Just loosen the retaining knob about a quarter of a turn, pull the spring loaded pin, rotate to new position, re-tighten the retaining knob, re-tension the belt and you are back in business. Takes on a few seconds to make a change. I was pleased as the design worked well on the first try. The only improvement would be to change the attachment point for the small wheel adapter and get rid of the extended piece that sticks out the front. This would be easy to do but probably not worth me making a new rotary plate. Just too busy doing other projects. Ha Ha Man, I love this grinder.

Excellent design implementation John. I am apparently going down the same road you traveled here. I've been researching all the various available grinders, plans, and kits currently on the market in the hope of building my own. I can't afford to purchase one outright, but broken into smaller component purchases and my own spare time working on it I believe is a viable option. I would use plate and have it cut so that I can weld, drill, tap it myself. Yours is the best design I've seen. Simple yet elegantly functional. Thank you for uploading and going over the aspects so thoroughly. Blessings and peace.

      Hi Greg,
      Thanks for the favorable comments.
It was fun to build and a joy to use. It is my one stop grinding, sanding, deburring, buffing and polishing center. I am especially pleased with the operation of my Rotary Platen Toolbar Design. So many options, vertical or horizontal operation and so easy to change to different finishing needs. The VFD and the ability to instantly change speeds to suit your project needs is another great option.
I did a ton of research looking at all the 2" X 72" Grinders and tried to take the best from each of them to make myself what I call the ULTIMATE GRINDER.
I love It and thought I would share.

I am just in the planning stage at this time, but I dont think that the one that I will build will be as complete as yours, because I dont have a CNC machine ( one on the way soon via conversion kit I hope ), only a manual Mill and Lathe.
I have seen the comercial ones and they are expensive and at the other end "white bone knives" put together one for $400 from scalvaged parts, it was very simple and did the job, grimsmo build one that was sort of like yours that even he said he made some mistakes in the design ( what I think he said ).
I particularly liked the add on wheels/tool bars that will turn it into a multi grinder of sort.
So hopefully I can steel some of your ideas and make one that is more flexible.
      Cheers

      @helicopterjohns  10 ปีที่แล้ว

Greg SB That is what is so nice about the internet and TH-cam. There is a lot of information out there if you just take to time to search for it. Good luck on your build. The nice thing about the toolbar design on my machine and others like it is that if you come up with a new idea you can just incorporate it into another toolbar. One last thing that I may do if and when I get some time is incorporate a 9" disc sander. I saw where one guy made one and drilled some holes into the end of his motor drive pulley and made dowel pins on the 9" disc and used some of those powerful magnets to actually hold it in place. Very simple yet effective. Just have to make some type of table for it. Just something for you to think about. Ha Ha

      Hi,
      Thanks for the favorable comment.
This has been one of the best projects I have undertaken. The pay back in terms of satisfaction and having a GREAT shop tool has really exceeded my expectations. I haven't tried one of the Scotch Brite belts yet, but I hear they are very nice. One day when I get some time I may add a 9" disc sander attachment to the drive pulley.
I am presently working on projects at it pertains to kayak steering and propulsion systems. A lot of real challenges there. Check out my You Tube channel for the videos on Electric/foot pedal STEERING and also tilt and trim features on trolling motors attached to kayaks.

The motor I used was a 2HP 1725 RPM 3 phase motor 56C frame mounting option.
The VFD that I chose has an 2X option. It is powered via 220Volts A/C Single Phase. The output is 220 Volts A/C Three phase. The 2X option allows the 1725 RPM motor to turn 3450 RPM.

There are multiple extension arms and many configurations that allow for many possibilities as it pertains to material rest positions. Also the 1 1/2" bar that supports the tool rests can be rotated in 90 degree increments. The tool rest does not interfere with grinding operations.

WOW! Better than a Bader. You just made my day. Ha Ha I did my research prior to building. Tried to pick the best of all worlds and added my own touch i.e. the rotary platen. Horizontal/Vertical operation, great wheel selection, variable speed, plenty of power, and the ability to add additional tool bars as necessary for any need that arises i.e. the additional tool bar that allows for mounting stuff like de-burring wheels, buffing wheels, wire wheels.
That's why I called it the Ultimate Grinder. Ha Ha I really enjoy this tool.

A real time saver. If you check out some of my other videos you will see some of the modifications I did to my machine. i.e. programmable coolant nozzle, i.e. PCOOL programmable solenoids for controlling opening and closing air collet fixtures etc. I also hear that HAAS CNC lathes work well also. I also made a vacuum fixture plate for holding plexiglas sheets while engraving LED Edge Lit Signage.

No problem. Just send me the request and I will add your e-mail address to my Google Drive folder. It will send you an invitation to download the files. There are several different CAD formats along with some support pictures. The compete build information is available on the CNCZONE. I have provided a URL link to it in the description located in the info/description box under the video here on TH-cam.
      Enjoy!

Thanks John. I got all 55 of 'em. I must say, you could potentially machine the rotary platen, tension arm and horz-vert pivot pieces as a "kit" of sorts for those who don't have access to a milling machine but still wish to use your design. the rest seems pretty straight forward and could be done with more common tools. Gotta pay for that HAAS somehow !
One item I was thinking of trying and you may like as well.... use a gas lift rod instead of the spring. (think hood/trunk lift rods)

No, I am not currently selling these. I do however have all
the CAD/CAM files for most of the parts utilized in building this machine.
The GOOD NEWS is they are FREE! Kind of a pay-back for all the help I have
received here on TH-cam over the years.
I do not accept any responsibility for your use of the
      information supplied. Utilize at your
      own risk.

Excellent design, I love to have it and for me would be like selling the Pinto and buying a Continental, and can't afford either one. Are you going to market the Lambo oh grinders 2x72 anytime soon? if you will not produce it can I borrow or purchase the prints, then I can have my Continental and burn the Pinto LoL, all the best and good sharpen for 2017, Serge

      Thanks for the favorable comment.
Both KMG and TW 90 Grinders are GREAT machines. To be mentioned them in the same sentence with them makes me really feel good. As I had the necessary CAD/CAM software and a HAAS TM-1P CNC machine I decided to make my own. I do have DXF files for the items I made on the CNC machine which supplies most of the dimensions for items machined. Also, If you look in the description under the video you will see a link to the CNC Zone where I posted information of the entire build. If you would like a copy of the files just send me a request via the contact option.
