  • Some more quality time with this original Civil War rifle. Very cool! We meant to speed up the reloading late in the video, as we did in an earlier video. We just forgot. Anyway, that's the reason for my comments about "speed reloading" and why I did not speak during reloading late in the video. I didn't expect you to be able to hear anything I'd say anyway. :-)

    I went to the museum in Springfield mass where they made those. They have hundreds of them stacked in racks that were ready to ship out at the end of the war and they kept them I guess. They all look like they were made yesterday, it's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen! You're a lucky man to have one in that shape.

    Civil War era rifles are my new niche. I have over 130 rifles and pistols of different types and as of late, I've grown an interest into single shot rifles. I appriciate each shot more. My recent purchases were a Browning B-78, Ruger No 1 and a Remington rolling block. Still want a trapdoor Springfield and a Sharps. Most of my firearms are military collectibles. There's just something about them. Like the nostalgia and feel of an older car.

      Surplus Sean; Great work Sean. That's impressive. My experience w/black powder is to sh$tcan the synthetic powder pelts and use "real black powder" & mini balls out of my Thompson Omega. I may not be all the way back to a Civil War rifle but I'm on my way!

      BilgePump...Thanks. Gun collecting is my vice. It's an expensive hobby. My wife hates that I buy so many guns. The plus side is that they hardly ever lose value and I have something physical to show for my money. My love of guns comes from my Dad. He had a lot also, but I think a lot of my interest comes from my interest in history. My Dad loved history so my childhood vacations were spent going to civil war battlefields

    I've had to pull a ball twice. You are right, it is very difficult to do, but it is doable... Thankfully. It was a flintlock longrifle, 45 caliber with a 440 round ball and thick denim patch. TIGHT fit. I couldn't get enough powder in to do the trick. Tried compressed air too. No luck.

    The reason for removing the barrel band springs was it was cheaper and faster to make when you needed rifles fast removing the springs meant your factory could make 20% more a day that is a big deal.

      too true people blame trench warfare on the machine gun, but I place its origins right here with the minie ball. You can see trenches start to form in some of the sieges in the civil war and the Crimean war.

      John Graham yes the cap lock system solved the problem of pan powder getting wet and created a water tight system. the pistols are the same way. the remaining problem, however, was with the cartridges. although they were made of heavy paper, rain water, atmospheric moisture, rivers, etc could easily ruin the powder.

    • @francois1473
      @francois1473 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will, the percussion caps are not that affected by rain like the naked powder in flintlocks.
      Offcourse with some serious rain it would be difficult to keep the powder and barrel dry during loading.

    • @spyderxtra777

Also doesn't say anything about not filling a form in to register it. Not sure this affects your 2nd amendment rights. Of course the 2nd amendment could be amended. The clue is in the name. Other amendments have been amended. Of course that's unlikely to happen due to NRA lobbyists etc. My point was I am a liberal and I don't have a problem with guns per se

      Brian Thornton Uh.. NO. We are talking about the FG42, which is a full auto paratrooper rifle. You are talking about the MG42, which is a full-sized machine gun. And with the exception of their "last ditch" weapons, none of the firearms used by the Germans during WW2 were garbage.. They were all excellent weapons. As a point of fact, the U.S. borrowed features from several of them to use in later weapons (like the M60 machine gun.)

      Now are you, 1) someone who has seen a lot of life, or 2) someone with the bold self-confidence every society needs (and readily finds) in its young men, and which (unfortunately) doesn't save them from complete breakdown when they see the reality of what they thought they understood?

    Was a wonderful insight to history, part 1 and 2, sad in someways that so many good men perished during that time.
    On a lighter note preservation of history is very important and I watch all your vidios and I am constantly amazed with your knowledge. So much so I am sure you have forgotten more than I'll ever know!!
    Thanks from OZ (Australia :-) )

    Loved it, keep em coming. The "early arms" stuff is great.
    That is some massive lead heading down range from that beast. Plenty accurate for white tail deer and certainly enough wallop!

    For what it is worth, you might have mentioned that the barrels on the original guns are iron, not steel. Firing an original with 60 grains of powder might produce more of an explosion than you expected! If you intend to get involved with a 61 type Springfield, get a repro, and stay safe!

    • @hickok45
      @hickok45  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, they were iron back then firing 60 grains of black powder, just as they are iron today firing 60 grains of black powder. As with any antique firearm, you want to check it out and make sure it's safe to shoot, whether it's an 1st Generation Colt or an antique muzzleloader.
      If you intend to get involved with antique firearms, get them checked out, but as with many, many thousands of people who shoot antique arms, don't just out of fear or an unnecessary obsession with "safety," feel that you can only shoot reproductions. My shooting experience has been vastly enriched through the years by experiencing so many antique firearms., maybe because I've never known anybody who blew himself up, or have even heard of anybody who blew himself up. :-)
      That said, everybody else's mileage might vary. Always do what you think is safe and be sure you are aware of your limitations.

    Isn't the correct term "rifle musket"? Muskets are muzzle-loaded while rifles use cartridges
    Correct me if I'm wrong

      With the adoption of the .58 Minie rifle in 1855 by the U.S Army, the designation for the various .58 Minie rifle barrel lengths was: 40 inch barrel "Rifle-Musket", 33 inch barrel "Rifle", and 22-24 inch barrel "Carbine". The ""Rifle-Musket" had roughly the same barrel length as the old smooth-bore musket (40-42 inch) and could use the same rank-firing and bayonet tactics developed during the smooth bore musket era. The Carbine was intended for use by Cavalry and Artillery units, and the 33" Rifle intended for use by skirmishing units as the shorter 33" barrel allowed for a slightly faster rate of fire for the forward-deployed skirmishers. The 33 inch Rifle was made with a thicker-walled, heavier barrel than the "Rifle-Musket" and was actually more accurate in long range firing tests at 500 yards and beyond than the .58 Rifle-Musket.

    I've had to extract a .45cal lead ball from my rifle. I made my own extractor tip out of a 2" metal wood screw. I cut off the screw head and ran a die (10-24) over it ........... then threaded it onto my ram rod and extracted the lead ball. Works GREAT!

    Would you/have you make a video going over the cleaning equipment you use? Does anyone have a link to a video that he says explaining the tools he uses for cleaning. I'm primarily interested in the what the end of the ramrod he uses to put patches down the barrel and then pull the patch out without it coming off the end is called. Does anyone know?
