"The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down" Through the Years! (Looney Tunes) - UPDATED!

  • Over the span of the Looney Tunes cartoons, there were numerous variations of its famous theme song, "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down." This was especially true when Carl Stalling was doing the music for the Warner cartoons, but there were not as many variations as "Merrily We Roll Along."
    This includes most (if not all) of these Carl Stalling arrangements, along with the 1955 Milt Franklyn version, and the infamous (and STRANGE) Bill Lava versions of the 1960s (but I steer away from that pseudo-jazzy version used on "The Looney Tunes Show!") I also left out the variation from "Box-Office Bunny," because this is only to cover the classic era of Looney Tunes.
    Unlike the logo montages I've seen, this is only to showcase the evolution of the theme music.
    I have updated this montage with a few RARE recordings, such as the closing themes without Porky's "That's all, folks!", and the full 1969 theme (my original source cut off the very start.)
    0:01 - The very first version, from 1937
    0:22 - A rarer alternate opening theme used only on three cartoons, from late 1937-early 1938
    0:43 - First version of the closing theme, 1937
    0:52 - Second version of the closing theme, early 1938
    1:02 - A different take on the opening theme, late 1938
    1:23 - A unique one-time variant of the opening theme, used only on "Joe Glow the Firefly," 1941
    1:42 - Faster-paced, vaguely brassier version of the opening theme, 1941
    2:01 - Faster-paced closing theme, 1941
    2:09 - First shortened version of the opening theme, 1945
    2:23 - A unique one-time variant of the closing theme, used only on "Acrobatty Bunny," mid-1946
    2:31 - "Goofy" variant of the shortened opening theme, final Carl Stalling arrangement, late 1946
    2:45 - Accompanying closing variant of the above theme, late 1946
    2:53 - Milt Franklyn's version of the shortened opening theme, 1955
    3:08 - Milt Franklyn's version of the closing theme, 1955
    3:16 - Strange "klunky" version of the theme arranged by Bill Lava, 1962
    3:32 - Abridged version of above theme used for closing titles, 1964
    3:41 - Revamped, "lighter" version of the Bill Lava theme, 1967
    3:57 - Rarer alternate version of Bill Lava theme used only on two cartoons, 1968
    4:12 - A unique one-time variant of the Bill Lava theme, used only on "Fistic Mystic," 1969

      @@ZakWolf That version of the Looney Tunes opening theme had two alternate variants. The first alternate variant had the "zooming WB shield" sound effect from the 1945-1955 Merrie Melodies opening theme, and appeared in the Academy Award-winning Pepé Le Pew cartoon, "For Scent-imental Reasons" (1949). The second alternate variant had a more powerful "zooming shield" sound, and appeared in the only Bugs Bunny cartoon in 3D, "Lumber Jack Rabbit" (1954). Other than that, the rest of the 1946-1955 Looney Tunes opening theme remained exactly the same in those two alternate variants.

    • @stephenholloway6893
      @stephenholloway6893 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Consider this, at the time, the Merrie Melodies were ten years old and the Looney Tunes were 11. It probably was meant to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Looney Tunes but it was pushed back til 1941.

    • @ZakWolf
      @ZakWolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think the reason for the special theme there was because "Joe Glow the Firefly" was the first one-shot Looney Tunes cartoon, as all previous titles in that series had recurring characters, and one-shots were typically the norm for Merrie Melodies (this was back when the Looney Tunes were still only in black-and-white, while Merrie Melodies were in full color.)

    • @stephenholloway6893
      @stephenholloway6893 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Possibly but consider that The Hep Cat, which was the first color Looney Tunes was also a one shot, and it didn't get a special theme. One would think that at least the first color Looney Tunes would get a special theme, instead of a black and white Looney Tunes short. Regardless of it being the first one shot Looney Tunes short.

    Oh, the Merry-Go-Round broke down
    And we went round and round
    Each time t'would miss, we'd steal a kiss
    And the Merry-Go-Round went
    "Um-pah-pah, um-pah-pah
    Um-pah! Um-pah! Um-pah-pah-pah!'
    Oh, the Merry-Go-Round broke down
    And it made the darndest sound,
    The lights went low, we both said "Oh!"
    And the Merry-Go-Round went
    "Um-pah-pah, um-pah-pah
    Um-pah! Um-pah! Um-pah-pah-pah!'
    Oh what fun a wonderful time
    Finding love for only a dime.
    Oh, the Merry-Go-Round broke down
    But you don't see me frown
    Things turned out fine and now she's mine
    Cause the the Merry-Go-Round went
    "Um-pah-pah, um-pah-pah
