@@liamderosa2157 Personally when I got my new violin, I ran through Alliance Vivace, EP's and Jarger Superiors. On new violins or violins that havent been played much ive been told by luthiers that they open up better with high tension, and to wait to put on low tension like gut strings.
I think my favourite was #4 as well. #3 had a nice clarity and detail to it, with good projection and character, but it lacked a 'oneness' of sound. 4 sounded very unified and the lower and upper registers complimented eachother really nicely. #2 just felt like it was lacking, and didnt have the same expressiveness.
This video should be seen by every beginner violin student. Eminently sensible advice, which will avoid buying the wrong instrument, encourage enthusiasm, and drive the player on to a lifetime of musical fulfillment. Wonderful ❤
it looks like your violin intoxicates you when you play it. like it puts your mind in a different space and it mellows you some like relaxing on a big soft couch after a long day walking. seems enriching for you to play it
Or when you have played for a soccer championship all day and you haven't drink not a single sip of water then you come home tired and you ease yourself with a freezing bottle of water
Esther, I would have liked you taking about the price of each violin!!! That would help a lot in learning how much you have to pay for a top class violin. Anyhow, the video is helpful.
Oh no... I have never even touched a violin before... I want to learn but idk how to even play scales. Guess I will ask the shop keeper for help! Very nice video! Very helpful for what I should keep an ear out for, thank you!
Thank you for the advice. Suggesting different techniques, such as low, hi, soft, loud, slow, fast, and especially 5ths (thank you) is very helpful. I would like to ask or suggest when describing what is good or what does not work for you, to offer specifics, rather than "it is not me" or "I don't feel comfortable." Perhaps: it is too bright, brash, brittle, or too warm or muted. Something that seems more specific to the sound or feel would be more helpful, I think. Otherwise, thank you for your tips.
This is only good for people that already know how to play, and play well. If someone is just starting or even been playing for a few years, they might not know what they're doing. I had a violin instructor friend tell me, if I can play twinkle twinkle little start with it sounding good in a year, I'd be doing well because of my age.
I picked #4 as well, before she said anything. Powerful, well balanced and nice clarity. #2 was also clear, and clean, but a bit upper middle bright, and weaker at the bottom. Three was also pretty nice, and had a big bottom end but was a little rough at the bottom, heard some wolfy tones. #1 seemed to have poor intonation,... the parallel fifths didn't track well, I wasn't totally sure it was well tuned up,... even though it was loud, and had a lot of low end, it seemed to have what hi end audio people call intermodulation distortion, (wolf notes). I'm wondering if a better matching of strings might have helped that one???. I'd love to know the makers names and when these violins were made.
From the sound I liked #2 & #4. It's very difficult to tell from the short pieces you played though. I am saving up to get a better violin (around $2K - that's a lot for me!), but when I have tried violins before I can tell they are better than the one I have but not much else. I am not very good at playing so I feel like I don't even know enough to ask the right questions.
I'm guessing #2 was one of the newer instruments??? Maybe???... it was sweet and smooth. I would also like to know more about the makers and dates of these instruments..!! They all sounded really very good and (expensive) to me.
Esther, thank you for this it is very helpful. I liked violins 3 and 4. What role does the type of strings play in your evaluation.I find different strings affect the sound of my current violin very much. So I am confused when I start evaluating new violins how to address this issue. Thanks John
Unfortunately, I am limited as a lefty violinist. However, I have found some lovely left violins on my travels. One, was an Italian beauty that was over 100 years old and it was a true lefty.
I still play my old school 1855 Italian fiddle, taking it out for jazz gigs (it isn’t valuable) I have 2 others. The NEW well known Japanese made violin I invested in, I don’t like at all. It’s got a BIG projection, but no heart or soul. I’m disappointed in it. I wished your video had been around earlier. It was great how you finally selected the one that suited your taste and requirements. I liked your Schindler’s List video too. Look forward to more to come Esther.
Just lovely sounding, and even looking, violins. The playing wasn't bad either hehe. I do wish that for me money were not an impediment. I'm not talking a Guarneri or a Strad but something up to $50,000 would take me from my $5000 old 19C German fiddle which, truth to be told is nothing to sneeze at, but oh, how I'd love to be able to go to that further step.
I believe number 2 made me sit up. But violins sound different under your chin, than they do to listeners don’t they? But all of these were very nice instruments anyway. You’ve influenced me to go out when it’s safe, to find that really special violin that will become part of me, hopefully!
I recently got the chance to try some violins at my conservatory. Actually none of their sound really convinced me since they were all brand new and haven’t been played yet. Is there a possibility to find out if they are good instruments although they haven’t developed their “real” sound yet?
Hi Esther. If it's your first ever violin that you'll be buying, how can you make sure you get a good one ? I guess you'd have to trust the violin tutor with their choice to you ! Thank you for your videos btw. You play really beautifully and such an inspiration ! I'm thinking of trying the violin out. X
I'm not Ester, but when buying your first Violin you'll want something that's affordable within your price range depending on how long you'll be playing. If you want one with a decent sound for an intermediate level player, the price for a good instrument starts around $1000. Student class, such as ones used in school orchestras are around $600. Whatever you do, don't buy a cheap Amazon violin unless it is from another reputable seller, and if so, buy from them directly. Make sure you have recommendations on how things should be from your teacher or someone else you trust with knowing the instrument. Also make sure you go to a trustworthy shop, such as an actual music store. I personally would go to a store that purely specializes in stringed instruments. Make sure you try the instrument for yourself rather than buy one online, even if you like it. Something might not feel right or work with you exactly. If you are just going to try and start playing the violin, don't buy one right away. There's no guarantee you'll even like the instrument. So before you spend a decent amount for money, ex. $500+, try and rent one for a while first. Once you know you like the instrument and have a desire to keep playing, then you can invest your money into a good intermediate class or higher, but if you're starting out, I'd reccomend renting.
Hi Esther ,now I’m playing a beginner violin but now I’m a intermediate student ,I would like to upgrade my violin but it seems that it’s very hard to learn to tune my current violin using pegs (I usually tune my violin using 4 fine tuners before practicing)because when I try the violin on in shop it only have 1 fine tuner how ? It’s a bit harder to tune my violin using pegs.
Always get a violin that has 4 tuners if your not a professional or semi professional. It's easier. Student class beginner instruments are often quite a bit cheaper and are almost always harder to tune just because of its quality. When I used to have my rental years ago, I couldn't tune it myself. With my new violin, I can tune my violin without an issue. If your pegs are stuck, make sure you get a peg balm for when you replace your strings next, it makes them easier to turn. But please make sure you do learn how to properly tune with the pegs eventually, because it's a skill you will need in the future if you keep playing
Violin 2 has a bright sound. Violin 4 has a less bright sound, so you can hear the notes better. I prefer violin 4 as well. Don't like the sound of violin 1 and violin 3.
some full-size (4/4) violins have different scale lengths slightly (the vibrating length of the string) and body dimensions, so even among 4/4 violins they are not EXACTLY the same size, they have some variation, so if you have small hands you choose something that will work with that and challenge that all the time.
Which of the violins did you guy prefer? Let me know in the comments!
Violin 4 was my favorite. What strings would you like to buy to put on the violin you end up choosing?
Nu.2; it sounds richer and a little 'gypsy'. I love this harmony!
No 1 maybe that's the one I can afford .

She looks like Audrey Hepburn - very beautyful
Funny I noticed the same thing ... she also looks a little like the Filipino Actress Arci Munos. th-cam.com/video/KJyUjPAUO7U/w-d-xo.html
I noticed that too.
I was thinking exactly the same!!!
Where can i buy ling ling insurance on my violin?
The viola case shop

Beginner students can't play to test an instrument.

That E-string on #4 was delicious sounding! Wow!!! The D-string on #2 was incredible as well!
For me definitely violin number 3 👌😉🌺
3 and 4 were the best ones for me! Thanks it was very helpful
Thank you, I needed this. My violin is absolute garbage.
I've learned a lot today. Thank you for sharing.
An interesting video. Thank you for sharing it. I liked violins nr 2 and 4.
I always love to hear your perfect fifths; so beautiful just like my piano tones ;)
I THINK I LIKED VIOLIN 3, BUT I DONT WANT TO CONFUSE YOU. THANK YOU FOR A VERY DIFFICULT SUBJECT.
That's some really great advice Esther thanks for the tips and good information pretty lady
The moment I heard nr 4... That was it for me
Hi! I'm a big violin fan and follow you on social media. Your videos are informative and sometimes quite fun. Thank you for sharing.
You are THE spitting image of Audrey Hepburn.
yeah, got the same feeling
Esther, I would have liked you taking about the price of each violin!!! That would help a lot in learning how much you have to pay for a top class violin. Anyhow, the video is helpful.
The one you picked . . . when you showed it first, I liked the grain spacing in the top.
Oh no... I have never even touched a violin before... I want to learn but idk how to even play scales. Guess I will ask the shop keeper for help!
Very nice video! Very helpful for what I should keep an ear out for, thank you!
I have to decide between two violins so I am happy for this video and I believe it will help❤️
Love your character.. Keep it that way
You look amazing! Nice playing

Definitely number 2 from the last three. But number 1 really got my attention in the beginning. Those two would have been my first selection :)
Number 4!! I think it's the best!

I didn't quite like no 1 actually and no 3 also felt a little wrong, but no 2 and 4 sounded very rich and my favourite was by far no 4! Beautiful!
Hi Esther, can you give more details of makers for these 4 violins? For me I prefer the second one, it's a little bit swwety.:-)
I'm guessing #2 was one of the newer instruments??? Maybe???... it was sweet and smooth. I would also like to know more about the makers and dates of these instruments..!! They all sounded really very good and (expensive) to me.
2 and 4. Violin perfect
Thanks 👍😍😍
Excellent choice! Number 4 is beautiful.
Violin 2 and 4 were perfect!

Great tips!! thanks for your ideas...
So, please share the makers and prices of each. I sense that #4 spoke to your soul.
Robert Palmer said it best - simply irresistible!
You are amazing and special...❤❤

I liked #3 the most.
It sings the most.
Ya, 3 was spot-on from the first note

Why is it not valuable? No particularly nice sound? Or is it just not a famous builder's best work?
Number 4 my favouriteee
Prends le 4eme violon je trouve que c'est celui ou tu joue le mieux et c'est celui qui a le plus beau son😁🎻
#4. I watched your eyes. You looked curious about what you could make it do. Cute! Professional but cute.

Esther! Rien à voir avec le sujet de la vidéo mais je me demandais si tu envisageais de participer au prochain concours Reine Elisabeth? 🤔
Hi
What would be the price of the 3rd & the 4 th choices. Where can you get them. Thanks for the advice
number 4 too!!
Where can I find the No. 4 🎻, is it possible for you to give some instruction about it
I am pianist, but would say obviously 4 is the best.
And did you decide that before or After she made her choice? Personally I thought 3 sounded the most on point, but she said it wasn't as Comfortable
Love you and miss you too... 💞💖🎶💖
8:58 what piece
