A lot of people deal with tragedy through dark humor. Combine that with a plane crashing into a tower being such an insane concept, 9/11 jokes were born. Plus there's now a large amount of people in the world who now weren't alive when it happened, so to them there's no personal trauma attached. So the jokes have become more accepted.
I have a friend from my local theatre (who are all born after or were too young to remember the event) who constantly make jokes about it especially when we play jackbox. But I (someone who lived in New York at the time and it's one of my first memories) had to get used to this quickly. and now I too make jokes about it
I’ve heard a second ___ has hit the ____ so many times at this point that I don’t even associate it with 9/11. I run the risk of just saying it to someone random as just a part of my vocabulary and offending them

She definitely got forced out of/felt unsafe enough to leave Smosh a few months after the crew gauntlet aired, stating a lack of respect towards her lived experiences (among other things, but that one's the important phrase because it's the phrase she used during the "bit"). So now, I'm going to say "Why are you so sure she was joking?"

It's been 23 years bud, the tragedy is old enough to drink and vote. I think it's old enough to take a couple jabs at it's expense.
