I remember that specifically being mentioned, but the author makes it clear that Poe had his hands in numerous and varied writing projects throughout his career.
The Soul of America could be interesting and depressing. It feels like some people keep wanting the US to be more than it ever was or ever will be. For brief moments, from time to time, there is the potential to be more, but it never lasts long. Maybe I'm being too pessimistic right now.
Great mix of genres! The Soul of America sounds especially good. I would love to read King Lear as well (and Macbeth). I think I would have nightmares if I read American Psycho, but I appreciate what he did with the underlying themes, lol😬. Hope your November reading is going well!
I was about to purchase Soul of America until I read the comment by TimeTravelReads. If feels like the great American experiment has been fatally wounded. Looking towards a better future feels like a pipe dream now, never attainable. Like many of the commenters here I too will be taking a political detox. I think many of us will be mourning for quite some time.
Oh man, that Soul of America commentary. 😔 Think I'm gonna need a break from reading anything about American history and politics for a while. Guess I'll stick with something uplifting like prion diseases and their prevalence in societies with cannibalistic funeral rituals. Looks like an interesting and varied reading month. Have a good one.
I too need a break from politics and history. My heart is broken. That being said, The Soul of America is such a wonderful book and Jon Meacham is a national treasure IMO.
@@lesliepowell-mccarty7067 It feels too much like I’ve witnessed the death of the American experiment. Democracy destroying itself with brash arrogance. It’ll be a little while before I can read American history without that dark cloud hovering over me.
Your reading was quite on point for October reading for sure Vin. Do your Poe biography talk about when Poe worked on a textbook on shells at all?

Pessimism feels about right these days, as much as I’m sorry to say.
Read King Lear last year for the first time. Immediately became one of my favorite Shakespeare plays.
It’s a great tragedy.

It is! Thank you!

I agree 100%. I’m overwhelmed with disgust. I feel that the nation has crossed a line we can’t go back from.
