Those people are correct,the reborn dolls were originally marked to adult collectors not children.
The dolls are extremely expensive as well which is part of the reason why there isn't many children who collect it.
I don't have a issue with people saying reborn dolls are for adults because it's true. I would understand more if a child was upset by that statement but I don't understand why adult would strongly disagree with it.

No it isn't a "tomboy" thing at all,in my years of life I noticed it's very common for any child to play with their toys roughly,this behavior isn't a boy or "tomboy" thing.
I knew "girly" girls who were more aggressive with their toys then their brothers and boys who treated their toys gently.
This is about maturity and having care for what you have boys and girls alike have these abilities.
Another I want to say is that you only mentioned girls when boys and men collect dolls too and it isn't just a girl thing.
I don't think it's a big issue,I think it is fine though dolls are traditionally a girls toy.
Baby dolls probably was originally marked to girls to have them practice motherhood but in modern times girls and boys alike typically play with dolls for different reasons.
Males and "tomboys" can also be nurturing this isn't just a feminine or girly trait at all.
