1989 World Championship downhill in Vail, Colorado brought a big surprise: title was won by Hans-Jörg Tauscher (West Germany) ahead of Peter Müller (Switzerland) and his teammate Karl Alpiger. One of the favorites Marc Girardelli (Luxembourg) took a disappointing 21st position

An amazing "once in a lifetime" race. Tauscher was the most careful and most patient glider through "Rattlesnake Alley" whereas the better drivers were too impatient and tried to gain speed which eventually resulted in mistakes costing them time. Can be seen best if you watch Giradelli.
