Bill Haders’ Stephon character was the funniest thing ever lol His crush on Seth Myers was hilarious and the way they said goodbye to the character when Bill Hader left was great :)
When Drew was quoting people who said, "SNL hasn't been funny since the 70's/80's," all I could think was, "These poor souls obviously haven't seen the Stefon sketches." They're some of the funniest skits to ever come out of SNL imo.
As a 20-year-old, I just recently started watching SNL, because I used to think it was all dumb. Now I realized you have to carefully choose which sketches you watch (depending on actors, sketch title, and video thumbnail lol). And having no nostalgic attachment to any era, I agree with Drew that the late 90s to around 2011 was the funniest era.
Pete Davidson is hilarious but his roles on SNL are usually awkward and unfunny. It is mainly because instead of making a sketch just for him to show of his comedic talent, they put him in a lot of sketches with unimportant roles just to attract younger audience.
Pete could write his own sketches if he wanted to have a recurring character and be on the show more, that's what Seth Meyers did and he worked his way up to the top. but he doesn't have to and honestly im guessing that he really just doesn't care enough anymore. if he does actually try to get sketches on its probably bc they're not funny enough. I dont really follow him tho so idk
He’s mediocre, but they’re going to keep him for as long as possible. Not because he attracts the younger crowd, but because he’ll probably kill himself (literally) if he got fired.

Also it affects the actual writing of the show. We've had back to back Comedian hosts like Chris Rock, Bill Burr, Kristen Wiig, and Dave Chappelle. All of which were hilarious and the Comedians got to write some of their own sketches. Here just from watching "Gen Z Hospital" we all know who wrote half these sketches.

"Comedy with an agenda is not comedy... Because it's not meant to make people laugh - it's meant to make people agree." Drew, funny man, I couldn't agree more. *WAIT*
😅 But on a serious note comedy with an agenda is still valid. But yes I agree that it can start feeling preachy very easily. Ergo don't forget to be funny I guess 😎
@@MiloKuroshiro Eh, that's a bit of an oversimplification. The message isn't what's important in comedy. It's not about agreeing. It's about being funny enough that even people who disagree can laugh along and say that they see the point. Its not about the audience agreeing with the message. It's about agreeing with what's funny about the message.
I strongly disagree with this point. It's very true that comedy with an agenda can often go off the rails in service of that agenda, but comedy can also be used as a very effective way of communicating ideas, including opinions. I guess what's important is whether it's done skilfully - it's probably harder to do good comedy with an agenda, because the work is in service of two goals - and whether the agenda eclipses the humour. But the idea that something can't do both things - make people laugh, and make people agree - is kind of ridiculous. It's a balance that has to be struck, for sure, but generally creative works are striking all kinds of balances. It's part of the craft. Anyway, I've never seen a complete episode of SNL, but I'm very willing to believe the anti-Trump stuff is bad. Plenty of political humour is ham-fisted, lacking in insight, and kind of pointless. I just think it's a mistake to jump from that to "comedy can't want to do anything other than make you laugh". I think that's hugely limiting.
Occasionally a nerd being a “nerd” is associated with.. ok I CANT explain why but I know exactly why they’re calling it “nerdily” and I don’t think they mean it as an insult
commenting from December 2023. I've been subscribed to you for a very long time, and I remember watching this video the day you released it, living in an Airbnb in the state hundreds of miles away from everyone i knew, because I followed someone I was in love with (shocker , they were awful) going back and watching this video now like four or five years later, I have my own apartment now and I'm thriving and I'm making money, and I just feel so awesome to watch something when I saw it on release and I was doing so much worse than I am now. just super cool, thanks for listening to my TED talk
I enjoyed it in its prime but now I find myself watching it but not enjoying my time with it so...I'm not sure what they did wrong but it has changed to be sure
Honestly, the reason I like to watch SNL is precisely to see, taking into account all the limitations (time, etc.), what they're gonna do each week. Sometimes it's good, sometimes not, but to me the appeal is the "trying" that's interesting in itself.
I feel like SNL is like an "audition show", where people go try to be funny in a stress-driven, very challenging environment to learn about production and writing...and then they move on to better jobs
Dude I feel like you handled the politics subject really well? You did the research, expressed your opinion, but stayed factual. That was refreshing. This is why I am subscribed. I mean you're the *only* channel on TH-cam...But yeah!
I feel like one of the only actual great actors on SNL at this moment is Kenan Thompson. I watched skits that he was in as a promo for his new show and I loved them. At first I just walked into my dad's room and saw it playing and I was like "are these just the funniest snl sketches compilation" and he said it was a promo compilation. I think that since he's had so much experience for 18 years then also being on All That( Which is a show a old show on Nickelodeon which had sketches). There are also amazing actors like Kate Mckinnon, Beck Bennet, Alex Moffat, and a few more that are good but Kenan Thompson is the best actor on SNL.
He's preparing for the inevitable divorce, where he gets kicked out of the house, has half his finances taken and then Chad from the bar moves in to bang his ex-wife's brains out. Sorry mate, you wont be spared.
I honestly really liked it. They knew what they were doing 100%, like with the Oogi Show and the Gen Z hospital which very much intended to be as cringe as possible. is that good writing? that's up for debate, it doesn't land for me, but I don't think it was bad. Chad on Mars, the Western sketch, and Elon Wario were absolute classics for me. and everything else aside, Elon does have Aspbergers, which is pretty apparent if you just watch his speech, mannerisms, etc during his monologue. It's not particularly easy to just get up in front of that many people and perform, and in that sense I think he did a great job.
@Sharko two cast members made one comment on Twitter, neither of which suggested he shouldn’t be hosting. you were sold a narrative that has no basis. also, it was actually a pretty funny episode
Idk i feel like SNL has ALWAYS been hit or miss. The bad sketches fade into oblivion and all we remember are the hits; the misses from later seasons are just too fresh to forget
EVERY SKETCH SHOWS are hit or miss. SNL, Madtv, In Living Color, Key and Peele, WKUK, they're all hit or miss. Ppl just remember the good ones that are on youtube and just block out the rest.
@@akulahirpada1993 I'm not sure about all of those being as hit or miss - the 5-day-turnaround format is part of the issue. When you get to plan and weed out a lot in advance prior to filming you have better chances to have a higher "hit' rate with material. SNL just doesn't really have the luxury of more of an editorial process.
honestly, i feel like everyone's fav snl era is always the ones that occur when you're in your late teens/early 20s. i personally love the current (2015- now ish) snl, I think the cast is phenomenal.

David Clinging I’ve been combing the comments for an actual response to that, thank you! I get why people don’t always enjoy comedy with an agenda but, not only is it comedy, it’s been historically important for a very long time.

Ive only really been frustrated with how they end the skits in snl lately. all of them seem like they don't have fluid ending. the writers seem struggle with creating a conclusion for so something so short. so it makes the punch line just trail off and become nothing.
I genuinely think last season into this season is the turning point we’ve been waiting for. 2nd half of last season (NOT including the Elon episode) was very underrated imo. For example last season’s episodes hosted by Timothee Chalamet, Rege-Jean Page, Carey Mulligan (good ep overall but Bowen as the iceberg from Titanic made it amazing), Keegan-Michael Key, and Anya Taylor-Joy were all great episodes. This season is even better and the new cast members (Aristotle, Sarah Sherman, JAJ and Please Don’t Destroy) have all been fantastic so far. I might be wrong but I think we’re looking at a new great era of snl
Please Don't Destroy is SO AMAZING!!! I think they've killed it literally every time they have a sketch. I'm always excited for their sketch! And Michael Longfellow is really funny too

Even though these videos are pretty long, I don't get bored watching them and they don't feel rambly. Everything Drew says has a point. I love this channel so much.
this was such a well put-together video. you speak so well and you delivered your topic and points very nicely. please do more videos like this. amazing job.
I feel like the "it's too political now" thing isn't really accurate, it's just that SNL has been harping on the same couple of points over and over again. There are also lots of skits that arent centered around politics but are inherently political one way or another. I think SNL has just been harping on on the same "trump orange and fat get it" and that just feels lazy and, like you said, mean-spirited.
SNL's brand involves finding the most lukewarm, unlikely to cause a hubbub political takes and putting jokes to them. When you have a situation like the current one where the political opinions that value human life are considered "far left" there's not much you can say politically that won't cause ratings to plummet.
@@samkadel8185 "political opinions that value human life are considered "far left" that is a gross oversimplification and you know it, my suggestion is that you get off Twitter and start looking into the whole spectrum of politics. Bubbles are not healthy. Also you contradict yourself in your comment. If SNL was looking for safe political takes, why are they bashing on Trump? because it is "safe" to do so. The problem is that people around the globe, not just America, is sick and tired of hearing about Trump and "woke politics". Even here in my country we hear about Trump on a daily basis, most people dont care and thats why people are turning away from stuff like that. Not because they dont value life, just apathy to media outlets that consistently pumps out this polarizing rhetoric, something you have also contributed to by saying only you and your political affiliations value human life, you will be met with resistance on that sense you will be viewed as a very smug elitist when doing that. Which in turn will only entrench your beliefs even more and your bubble will shrink and all of a sudden, everyone that does not encorporate the same values as you is a nazi or vice versa. Start listening and you will see that people have deeper thoughts then whats on the surface, it will broaden your perspective.
@@snes3351 when stating "no one deserves to be bankrupt due to illness" gets a response just as if not more vitriolic than yours, I get to say that valuing human life is considered far left in the US. besides, I don't even use Twitter. Beck and Kyle sketches are the best. The sitcom parodies they made with Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth are glorious.
He and keenan will never leave

Melissa is too. Her talent is impressions and they never use her for that...
Ego Nwodim is one of those people that they just figured out how to write for. While this may not be the best season, I feel like she is finally starting to shine.
Ikr!!! Midday news + A Teacher really made her my favorite cast member
Heidi gardner too is starting to fall into her niche

YEAH excactly what i'm saying
Yes Andy samburg is my favorite comedian
"Comedy with an agenda is not comedy... Because it's not meant to make people laugh - it's meant to make people agree."
Drew, funny man, I couldn't agree more.
*WAIT*
😅
But on a serious note comedy with an agenda is still valid. But yes I agree that it can start feeling preachy very easily. Ergo don't forget to be funny I guess 😎
All observational humor is literally about someone selling a point of view and expecting that his audience agrees. Literally.
Including this video
Yeah I dont agree
Drew mentioned Mulaney, and didn’t acknowledge how they are basically the same

i watched john's netflix specials the other day and realized how similar they are omg

@@akulahirpada1993 totally right. It's the same way with every form of entertainment really
@@akulahirpada1993 I'm not sure about all of those being as hit or miss - the 5-day-turnaround format is part of the issue. And he loves his wife! Very John Mulaney
Ive only really been frustrated with how they end the skits in snl lately. all of them seem like they don't have fluid ending. the writers seem struggle with creating a conclusion for so something so short. so it makes the punch line just trail off and become nothing.
And then they also have the opposite problem of running sketches too long. Sometimes the joke ended a minute earlier but the sketch is still going.
