    You and I are more like brothers than i thought. I dont shop either, when i need something I go get it and I’m done. This weekend my wife is going to take our 5 year old granddaughter Christmas shopping. That means i get a Saturday to do what i want around my woods and yard. Cut wood, split fire wood for fires and maple syrup, for 2024 not 2023. Saw a few logs for lumber on bandsaw mill.
    Best part, no people around!
    Love my family and work but this is my therapy! Wood therapy!
    Friends talk about cabin fever around march, not me I have cabin time 1/4 mile out in the woods during sugar season.

    I feel ya on the crowd thing. I used to live in a large metro for many years and just recently bought a house on a few acres out in the country. Closest town is 15 min away and is maybe 15,000 population. So much nicer than the metro, even if I've got to head into town. Nice and quiet out here. I cut and split my own wood out back and couldn't be happier.

    I don't notice smell of Cherry much when cutting but sure like the smell as it burns! 🍒 The number 1 feedback I recieve from newly converted fireplace burners is...Cherry gets really hot and in a hurry! They overfill the rack with wood when lighting fire, but soon learn to make the needed adjustments. 👍👍

    Love that comment about shopping. I've done the same thing. I don't care if it's big box store and I have $800 worth of lumber. I'll just leave the cart and walk right out. I don't need to aggravation. I like it when the people in front of the line have four credit cards and they want to use up what they have on them. $38 on this one $26 on that one. This one won't work. Let me try this one. I don't deal with that either. Yes, I love cherry wood I love the smell. I used to love to get Rock oak usually on top of the mountain Pennsylvania that burns like anthracite blue flame and low ash that spoiled me on firewood. Take care, stay safe

    all species of hardwoods contain the same amount of btu's per pound when 100% dry.. 8600 btu's per pound dry..seasoned hardwood ideally is 20% moisture content which lowers the btu's to 7100 btu's per pound..Dry Cherry weighs 2928# per cord..Dry red oak weighs 3528# per cord..white oak and black locust weigh about 4200# per cord..and the most dense and heavy is Osage-orange at 4728# per cord..A half ton pickup with a 8ft bed and a true half cord of say seasoned white oak would weigh 2100# or about one ton, if its a true half cord that half ton pickup will be sagging pretty good with one ton on it!..I feel most firewood sellers are ripping ppl off saying that there pickup truck load is a half a cord!..to be a half cord it either needs to be perfectly stacked in up level with the bedsides of a 8ft bed or thrown in and mounded pretty high above bedsides

    The main reason your customers are buying up the cherry is that it is the BEST smoking wood and is very expensive!! You're selling it as firewood but I'll bet they're buying to use on smoker; it is great with pulled pork, chicken, turkey, ribs, beef brisket, and anything else you would want a good dark color to and great taste to!! Mix in a little apple, pear, pecan, and white or post oak for total coverage on the smoker! It brings a premium down here in Tennessee and is plentiful here too!!

    I'm the same way regarding shopping and crowds. Just... No. The only time I like a crowd is at a live concert, just because it's a cool energy and a good band will feed off of it.
    I just picked up a load of mixed oak- red, white, pin, etc with a bit of walnut in it. I wanted some good coaling wood to cook with, and my supply of oak and beech was dwindling fast. This year, just finding oak seems to be the impossible dream, lol. Everyone's been cutting from the seemingly limitless buffet of dead standing ash, and everything else is just a bonus. You can find some as part of a mix, sometimes, on Marketplace- but good luck getting anyone to answer their messages... I found this guy via a recommendation from another customer at the chainsaw shop! He overheard me chatting with the owner, and gave me the guy's #. He's sitting on probably 5 cords, but doesn't advertise and lives way off the beaten path.
    I have to agree with your assessment. The difference in burning characteristics was stark, between oak and the Ash and Sugar Maple I was also burning. I used a mix of my existing DRY oak, and the new recently rained on stuff, so it wasn't just the damp. It IS harder to get going, and burns slower, and with less flame. The coals lasted and lasted, and lasted, though. For beer drinking and marshmallow toasting fires, other woods, like maple, ash, cherry, etc are the better choice. They just burn brighter. I had one piece of Oak- a chunk of limb split off a crotch- that outlasted everything. I baked a massive potato in the coals, sauteed vegetables, and grilled pork chops- and this thing still had unburned wood showing, lol. It'd been in the fire for probably 2 hours by this point. I've seen Beech do this, too, as well as Honey Locust.
    Worked great, for what I wanted it for- but I'd have liked it BETTER, if it hadn't taken so long to burn down to useable coals, lol. It was 7:30 by the time I got to eat- and I started the fire at 4! I'll definitely be splitting much of this smaller, and probably cutting the knots into chunks.

    Really appreciate all your content and the effort you put into all the footage, it's excellent and very helpful and always look forward to new videos. Question for you, going to look at a used 576xp, includes 3 bars and a few other extras, anything you can suggest to look out for, maybe remove muffler and check piston, pull cord for compression?

      Yeah I hear ya. That's why it's my retirement plan to get a home with at least a 10 acre buffer somewhere in the NY State/East coast region. If I didn't have so much family here I would be open to head out more west say Appalachia, but admittedly I'm a people person, however people have been really disappointing me lately with their willingness to go along with ideologies that will surely destroy the country. I like cherry better. The smell, and it dries fast, lighter, and splits really easy. I split a lot of it with the Fiskars axe since its faster then running it through the splitter. At least the stuff that is no bigger then say 14 inch diameter. Most of what I cut is maple, ash, cherry, ironwood, and beech.

    • @InTheWoodyard
      @InTheWoodyard  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, it is good stuff, sounds like you have some nice firewood!

    • @JesseLJohnson
      @JesseLJohnson ปีที่แล้ว

      @@InTheWoodyard Do you have beech there? Its supposed to be 27.5 million btu. I know some people call them trash trees here since they basically drown out other trees. I know it gets some use for lumber but its not a real sought after tree for lumber but it makes great firewood. Its a bit stringy though. Lot of it here is getting some fungus or something killing a bunch off. Almost looks like a tornado went behind my body shop there is 10 of them that the tops have blown down all beech. There is a bunch of ironwood that uprooted itself back there too. Kinda hard getting in and out of there or I would have cut it all up by now. Going to have to cut a trail back in so I can get back there with my ATV to skid it out.
