@@Quintpapa22 They didn't sell any albums which mean what money did they make for Death Row? none.
Now Rage's Afro puff song was sold as a single which that single went platinum (now it is double platinum) , so Rage's a Afro Puff single at least made a health profit for Death Row, yet her album Necessary Roughness didn't go platinum nor gold, so it do make a profit for Death Row.
Nate Dogg, Danny Boy, Oftb, Jewell, Michel'le, Young Soldierz, & 6 Feet Deep had not made any money for Death Row as individual artists.
However Rage as all the other Death Row artists were overly paid by Suge Knight from the years (1993-1996) of advance money that he gave to them.

I miss record stores so big. Big huge ones like Sam goody, tower records, Hastings etc. having the physical CD, checking the artwork etc. music lost 1/2 its substance thru streaming. It used to be a whole experience. And as a local artist I miss the hustle so bad. Selling cd after cd for $10/pop. Those were the times no doubt

      Suge Knight was generous.
Death Row artists who didn't sell one record ,were getting monthy of thousands of dollars, living in expensive apartments suites, driving expensive cars, getting all of their bills paid by Death Row. Suge had all of his Death Row artists living like rich superstars.
Word is when Soulja Slim (a No Limit artist) mother was about to lose her home unless she came up with 20,000 dollars he went to Master P to ask him for the money and P for whatever reason told Slim no, had not only a Death Row artist or one of Suge Knight's family members or friends but someone who he barely knew ask him for 20,000 dollars or more he would have given it to them.
Suge indeed no doubt he did a lot of wrong but he is not all bad, he did a lot of good.

      @PancakeDiaries 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@stevo405ppl don't realize this, but Publishing comes in 2 kinds... Timeless and non timeless. Most publishing is non timeless, which means it wanes out to a tapering point of not netting anything. This is why ppl sell parts of their catalog to companies. Lil Wayne doesn't own "500 Degreez" publishing anymore because he sold it in that deal a few years back, but it's understandable too. The Carter albums are the bread and butter of his publishing... Royalties only come in twice per year, so those checks are cumulative always. Once the numbers on those checks start being less and less, that's a super sign that a song has run its course. Pub is different... Publishing has to be worked and must artist these days aren't in a position to do so. Song gets tik tok famous and and ninjas think it's up lol. Songs need placements for those numbers to remain juicy tho. Non timeless publishing? That new Million Dollar Baby song... Timeless publishing? Return of the Mack by Mark Morrison. RotM came out in 1996 and has never gone a year without being featured in some ad placement, film, or show... 1996!! When COVID was on it ending, the song was in 3 commercials simultaneously. That's valuable publishing

It wasn't about them being let into bigger venues it's because you have to fill the damn seats if you don't sell the tickets you can't be in a big arena and especially back in the 90s you'd be lucky to get 10,000 people to a hip hop show and that's the best of the best. Even the Hard Knock Life tour I went to was only selling 10-15k per show. .... the reason there are so many hip hop artists unrecovered is because a lot of hip hop labels were charging these artists everything they could possibly think of so that they could live well it happened in the rock and roll World as well but those labels were smarter and didn't put as much money into the records. Hip hop and R&B was trying to spend a million dollars on every video telling the artist that's what they had to do. But it was all a game. And Reggie when you talk about Fat Joe the fact of the matter is some people are just smarter with their money and Investments then others none of them young kids was looking at a bank account worried about how much they were making they were spending it as fast as they could make it they would rather look rich than be rich

Reg is right about the artists only getting royalties for 10-12 songs, and he’s talking about R. Kelly’s “12 play” album..Most of the more business smart artists or had a good team behind them knew this and followed this code(Intros, Outros and Skits didn’t count).. For example.. Nas “Illmatic” 10 songs, Wu tang clan “Enter the Wu tang” 12 songs, B.I.G “Life after death” (Double CD, 11 songs on one CD 12 on the other) a lot of albums had 13 songs(One freebee) Intro, Outros and skits pushing the total to 15 or 16 tracks.

Rage's Afro puff single went platinum yet her album didn't go platinum nor gold ,so she made a profit for Death Row with her Afro puff single going platinum, but she was still overly paid with all of the money that Suge Knight advance to her & all the rest of his Death Row artists through their time being signed to Death Row.

Reggie kinda forgot to mention that iirc in the early 90s most media outlets (you know your local and national news networks) would report and highlight any violent incidents that happened in "mostly black staring roles movies that had to do with urban stories", "all the Hip hop artists as long as it wasn't anything radio friendly artists aka if something happened it would be blown so out of proportion as to make it seem that the "people" couldn't behave and thus you couldn't have these shows or films"
That was preventing a lot of Hip Hop rap concerts in the late 80s and early 90s, nevermind that before Deathrow Records and probably Ruthless Records minus Ice Cube complaining about the legal jargon in the contracts that most of the NYC rap labels had stories where some artists would end up not making much money so much in fact that a couple of Hip Hop rap groups and artists from NYC had already made songs and music videos telling people that the record companies were shady or ripping them off.
In comparison yall have to remember that as soon as Dr Dre did what he did to Eazy-E, basically Dr Dre attempted to BREACH his contract and the problem with a "contract" is that it is comparable to buying a brand new car or maybe a used car where you are supposed to pay on time and if you miss payments and keep doing that then the car gets repossessed and your credit is messed up.
For music a contract is that whatever it says, YOU agreed to it so if you agreed to do three or six albums then you gotta do those albums but better than that is we know how some artist sold multiple millions of rap albums but the label still ripped them off.
Also the OTHER major issue most people on here have zero clue about was that back in the 80s and early to mid 90s there were many government, conservative Christian GOP groups and democrat groups that tried to ban rap music albums from being sold in record stores but before that happened in the late 80s it was super difficult to find any rap albums outside of NYC or major urban areas... that even included some communities that didn't feel it was music at all so when the controversy over trying to ban and censor rap music happened it kinda made more people aware that they could buy Hip hop music in stores so some stores started carrying it and there are stories of people like Kid n Play saying how they were told their first couple of albums only sold 500,000 but they heard it was actually higher but couldn't prove it cause they found out later.
Meanwhile during the 80s and 90s the hair bands, glam rock, metal bands etc could easily get contracts to fill up arenas but the same promoters claimed Hip hop attracted a violent crowd etc.

They contact artists that are hungry to get in the game and get them to pay him for placement on a mixtape that he will put out. A mixtape that he will not promote. They have about 30 songs on it from different artists and he charges $300 ( maybe more now) to get on it. He passes the word to other artists and they contact you for the same thing. @bomb1st considering everything thats going on with diddy these days.. what do you guys think Pac was talking about with regards to Puff on Against All Odds? He mentioned puff did some shady shit, got robbed, and finally, you can tell your friends whatever you want, but me and you know whats going on. I always wondered what pac meant. It also makes you wonder what pac really said on that angie martinez interview. According to Gene deal it was bad enough that puff had it stopped, so it really had to be inflammatory
