There is a mechanical device in the engine that prevents the guns from firing when the propeller is in the way. It works by putting a cam on the shaft, which only lets the gun fire when the prop is out of the way. It was invented during WW1 by Anthony Fokker.
Its was called a synchroniser gear that was tied directly from the engine to gun, that was always timed no matter the speed of the engine, to prevent bullets from hitting the blade.
13:24 the guns are connected directly to the crankshaft kind of like how your cars engines work with the camshafts being attached via a belt or sometimes chain if ur a camarrow enjoyer so the guns can only fire when the propeller that is attached directly to the engine has just pased so if your engine is broken the guns irl wouldn't be able to fire but in war thunder I dont think they have that as a feature thankfully.

It's not that they're not competitive, it is that back when u were probably grinding to top tier the economy was not all that terrable like it has been for the past 2 or 3 years. War thunder actually has a cap on hop much rp and sl that u can earn per battle now and has had it for quite a while now. I can typically get about 12 kills as a f2p player in say my m6a1 is a good low tier example with okay modifiers and I will get my rp maxed out at 1750 and my sl will never go higher then like 10 thousand which does change a bit but if I get 12 kills I get the same sl as I would with 6 or even 4 kills plus or minus a few hundred depending on what hits gave me which are not affected by it. At rank 4 with modifiers twice as good I still get capped at like 10k sl but the rp stops at 2500 this time around unless u of course have premium. The average game at like rank 4 also will give you about 1100 rp with vehicles that can be arround 200k rp to research now which is just downright awful to grind as a f2p player.
yeah to be fair i only play Air so i have no understanding of ground rp etc.. but i can see how it may be stressful for some players who cant just dish out cash all the time for premium time

The gun had to be designed to fire through the propeller without hitting it, which was not an easy task.
The solution was timing.
According to others the guns are connected to the engine which control at which point it shoots avoiding the propellers at any speed
