    ✅ SHOP NOTES: After a BUNCH of research I decided to install several "High Bay" LED lights in my new shop space instead of going with my original plan of using traditional linear lighting. I'm fortunate that I have 12' tall ceilings, so that gives the light cone plenty of space to get its elbows out and spread around the space. I misspoke when I said they were 18,000 Lumens though. These are 14,000.

    As an electrical engineer who does lighting designs too your choice of 500 lux is good choice. The difference I did in my shop is that I place quad receptacles 44 inches above the finished floor every 6 feet so they were above my workbenches and easy to get too. I also placed a 230 volt, 20 amp receptacle every other quad for my power pro shopsmith. I have been very happy with that arrangement.

    5000k to 5600k is considered as daylight temperature. This is what you’d find in a photo studio. That glare your having issue with caused by the size of your light source. Putting diffusers on your lights will allow the light to be bounced all around your space and softening up the light. This is why photo studios have all those large umbrellas and other modifiers on their very powerful strobe lights.

    • @MyGrowthRings

    Congrats on the shop progress. I am sure there is a lot of good topics like this in the future regarding setting up a workshop from a basic shell. What about covering ceiling height issues? For example, those lights would never work for my 7.5 foot ceiling. I had to go with several led strip lights to spread the light over a shorter vertical distance. On the other hand my strip lights would never work for your tall ceiling.
    Speaking of ceilings, for energy efficiency sake, are you considering a drop ceiling or loft over the work shop area? If so, that could change the lighting equation too.

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Tom. You are absolutely right that this type of light would be terrible on a low ceiling. I will be installing a ceiling but have yet to decide what type. There's a lot to be said for keeping it high, but if I lower it I will do a drop ceiling. I am researching...

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I did give that some thought and there is enough power to do that, but for my personal use, we would install that type of service up at the house. This building is a bit too far off from our house for us to use it for everyday parking. Good thought, though. Scott

  • @RobertKeeney
    @RobertKeeney 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't use anything but 5000-6000K anywhere in my shop or home. Once you get used to them, the old school light looks dim by comparison. We still have a few rooms in the house that have halogen bulbs that we used to think were white. The other day, my wife told me how dimly lit one of the rooms was and that everything looked yellow.
    Why use 5000-6000K LEDs? Colors, for one thing, are about as close to as you can get to daylight. If you are painting or doing any photography, you need white light. You can see fine details much better, probably because of the colors.

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      CRI or the Color Rendering Index is an altogether different thing then color temperature. There are cool lights that render color poorly and there are warm lights that render colors well. If you look on the package of your lighting it’ll list CRI, which is on a scale of 1 to 100, with 100 being the color rendering of the daylight. These lights are 80 on the CRI scale, which is lower than I would like, but what I could justify purchasing. Scott

    • @RobertKeeney
      @RobertKeeney 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MyGrowthRings I don't yhink you are going to get a high CRI from a yellow light,
      5500K is white.

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RobertKeeney All LEDs begin their life as blue, cool diodes and they are made warmer by adding a “filter” of phosphor. The thicker the layer of phosphor, the warmer the light. My employer sells 2700k LEDs that render color above 90 CRI.

    • @RobertKeeney
      @RobertKeeney 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      LEDs come in several colors: Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Ultraviolet, Infrared, and White. Most lighting uses blue because of cost, ease of manufacturing, and other factors. I don't think you can buy the white LEDs. If you can, I would expect them to be very expensive. At one time, red LEDs cost $200 each. Today I can buy 450 LEDs for $13. In the early 1979's, a friend and I worked out a crude design for an LED TV that lacked only blue LEDs. I predicted that someone would make these, and they did, but the color was not good. I should have purchased some stock.
      CRI is part of the issue, but not all of it. Ambient light changes as the camera angle changes. Suppose I put a toy car in a light tent; the white background changes when the toy is rotated because the light bounces around in the tent differently. The sensor in the camera, the software in the camera, and the format you are saving the image in all make a difference. Then you put it into a computer, and it can all fall apart. I have two monitors. One that is supposed to have excellent color. And a monitor that isn't to see the images on both. I only crop and adjust white balance because I don't want to create an image that looks like crap on a cheaper monitor. I don't have any lights, fluorescent or LED that are not CRI 80 or higher. Thes lights are good enough for what I do. When I started this high CRI, lights were costly, and I found that if I purchased quality 5000-6000K lighting, they all had CRI 80 or better. I soon discovered that I could see details much better with this lighting.

Best thing I did was have quads (four outlets per box), 42 inches off the floor (so no bending down and having to search behind lumber, cabinets, tools, etc. for an outlet) and those spaced every 4 feet apart. I have plenty of amps but, with some much machinery… I found that I had to split several runs to keep from throwing the breakers. For example having only one run for my planer and dust collector was overwhelming. Now, if I had sized the wires to run 30amp breakers I’d have been OK… but, we live and learn!

      If you explore the studies on health and LED lighting you'll find that the LEDs that have been determined to be bad on the eyes are industrial and automotive lights. According to the ANSES: "As a result, currently for indoor lighting, only LED lamps of risk groups 0 or 1 (in accordance with the NF-EN-62471 photobiological safety standard) are accessible to the general public. The most risky lights (groups 2 and 3) are, for their part, reserved for professional use under conditions guaranteeing the safety of workers."
