I love a bit of featheredge. Best looking fencing. So much nicer on the eye than concrete. I've only done my own fencing over the years but was wondering if you'd had many problems with such a narrow post hole? I use a border spade and dig the width of that square. About 1½ bags of postcrete per hole. Also, i couldn't really get on with those postsaver sleeves. Painted posts with bitumen paint in the end. I saw a vid on youtube....'proper diy' i think....and the sleeve filled up with water above the ground. 🤷♂️ Great job by the way. Love the 2x8 gravel boards. 👍🏻
Really love your positivity! We tend to dig the holes deeper than most. We usually get 2 bags in per hole. We have painted posts and sleepers etc with bitumen paint. It also works really well.
What an awsome job, i have helped my friends who have fencing companies and can really appreciate what hard work it is , especially when the holes are laughing at you when digging out, amazing boys, well done!!!
We didn't. We used longer posts and then set the heights of the rails and gravel board using a string line. Marked the posts and then rested the large saw on the top rail to cut the excess off the posts. With pressure treated posts rotting on the top would happen a long time after the posts have rotted at ground level.
Those are post savers. They protect the post around ground level where it is more likely to rot. When correctly installed will add 5 years+ to the life of the post.
Ahh that makes sense cos I got a quote from the supplier gavel board 25mm thick and fence rail 22mm thick, I think it is too thin and wobbly? What is the depth? Who is the supplier if you dont mind me asking?
Inferior quality as compared to the fence that D&J Projects installs. Do you have the option for concrete posts and gravel boards with replaceable wooden sections?
We do the have that option. This client preferred the wooden posts with post savers. Where we are this is the most common style by far. Love the work d and j do.
@@gorillagroundsandgardens Thanks for the reply. I'm quite sure the concrete version is much more expensive but much more durable. All in the budget, I suppose.
Get rid of that block and spirit level! Tape measure and mark every 4” top and bottom rail, check with a level every 30 boards, work smarter not harder, and definitely quicker. 👌🏻
3 questions : 1) why not using an auger to dig those holes , since you seem to be quite mechanized ( stump removal etc..) 2) all the bushes on the neighbor side, they are just cut short and will grow back, any possibility to ask the neighbor to remove them all.3) how about the other 2 sides of the property ?
1) the type of ground we have here is full of rocks so even when using a 150mm auger you end up with sometimes a 300mm or more hole that needs a lot more concrete 2) We cut the bushes down and then dug out the stumps so they won't come back. 3) There are good hedges on the other sides of the property so a fence is not required.
How much did all of this cost you? I just had my fence also built, I couldn't imagine all the cost If they had to do stump grinding and all the other things.
I suppose you retreated all the cut ends and post tops and didnt nail through 2 feather boards as you were putting them up allowing for expansion / contraction thus avoiding the possibility of splits boards. Otherwise it looks quite tidy. Would have liked to see a back weather on the posts !
What has destroying vegetation got to with pitting up a new fence. Also why does the neighbour get the front of the fence why was a double fronted fence put in place
Where this fence was there are a large amount of rocks and pebbles in the ground as well as the concrete from the old posts etc. with a 250mm auger you end up with a 400mm hole if you are not careful.
The client has planted along the fence to break it up which already looks great and will be even better in the spring. Should we do a follow up video as the garden comes together?
Great looking job, sadly it won't last very long for almost the same money you could have used concrete posts with gravel boards and your timber infill.
There is a bitumen sleeve on the posts at ground level. This is where they rot so with this protected I would expect this to last around 20 years. The client likes the look of the wooden posts far better than concrete.
I don`t get this silly rules in UK as someone who pay a lot of money for new fence see the back of it instead front. Also I have a question as a team who doing this type of works why you don`t have soil drill ???
I have never heard of that, and i used to put a lot fences up. Neighbours were a bit cheeky asking if they could have the best side, falling out or not, if they wanted the best side i would have said you pay for it you can have what you want.
In theory if the person that pays for the fence can put the good side wherever they like. The neighbour in this case asserted there was a legal requirement to put the nice side facing them. To the best of my knowledge this requirement does not exist but the clients wanted to keep the neighbour happy.
The neighbour mentioned they should get the "nice" side of the fence and our clients want to keep their neighbours happy so told us on the day to change which way the fence was facing. It created a bit of extra work for us and an additional cost for our clients but I think in the end our client got the best side anyway.
Well after a few years of high winds these fences will topple and when they come down its always in winter, very hard to replace and even harder to get someone to replace them, should maybe mention this to customer.
The only one that has gone wrong so far was caused by a massive flood that washed all the soil from around the posts. 000's of meters and many good storms without issue over the last 5 years.
At 8:30 or thereabouts, your camera operator is waving the camera around a lot -- the picture is extremely unsteady and is not focusing on the main action point. Better camera work is needed for making a good video.
1st thing, you could have saved a days labour on by using AUGER / FENCE POST HOLE BORER / GROUND DRILL, 2nd thing I noticed you didnt slant the cut on the top of the posts for rain run off? 3rd thing, you made the fence like a sail, one good gust will take it out, wheres the air going to pass through the fence, exactly none, any good fence builder knows wind passing threw a fence reduces the push over
1. We have large amounts of rocks in the ground that tend to make an auger move away from where we want the hole or make a hole 3x the size we actually want. 2. Water running off the top of the post doesn't make any difference from experience, the post will rot at ground level long before the top rots. 3. I pleased to report this fence and in fact all others we have put up over the last 5 years of fencing have made it through all of the winter storms. I would love to see some of your fence builds so I can see how a "good" fence builder does it and take some notes!
Well i had to look to see if a fence could blow my mind, i wasn't surprised when it didn't tbh. Maybe work on your video titles, most people prefer honest titles

New subscriber, great video, excellent result 🙂👍👏
Great video. This is my next job. Any chance you could let me know the dimensions of the timber rails in this video? Thanks
Hi, how did you set the height of the posts to achieve consistent height above the ground? Thanks
We didn't. We used longer posts and then set the heights of the rails and gravel board using a string line. Marked the posts and then rested the large saw on the top rail to cut the excess off the posts.
With pressure treated posts rotting on the top would happen a long time after the posts have rotted at ground level.
Ah I see, that makes sense, thanks for coming back to me!
Good work ethic. Well done lads! Nice to see a tidy result. 🙏❤️
Thanks. The client was very pleased even with the "back" side of the fence. The rails are ideal for attaching trellis to for growing climbing plants.
Great job lads very professional. Wish you was based near me 👌🏻
What a amazing job good to see thank you from New Zealand
Thanks Terry! I grew up in New Zealand so good to see this video has made it all the way back home.
What’s that used around the base of the posts?
Those are post savers. They protect the post around ground level where it is more likely to rot. When correctly installed will add 5 years+ to the life of the post.
Nice Job Chaps - Keep them coming
Thanks! We are working on more videos all the time.
How do you put the top cap on? And how do you fix into it? Does it need a counter Batton
This top cap we generally screw down through the top into the thick end of the boards. It doesn't need to sit on a rail
Is gavel board same thickness as the timber rails? What size timber rails are they?
Rails are 38mm thick and the gravel board is 45mm thick finished size. Just enough to sit the feather edge on.
Ahh that makes sense cos I got a quote from the supplier gavel board 25mm thick and fence rail 22mm thick, I think it is too thin and wobbly? What is the depth? Who is the supplier if you dont mind me asking?
That looks tremendous. 👍👌
As fences go ..good job .
Little tip, use concrete posts and gravel boards otherwise the whole thing will rot
It's all down to the customer's preference! Appreciate the thought though!
Inferior quality as compared to the fence that D&J Projects installs. Do you have the option for concrete posts and gravel boards with replaceable wooden sections?
We do the have that option. This client preferred the wooden posts with post savers. Where we are this is the most common style by far.

All the wood is pressure treated so painting is not required. We always advise people not to.

Good run that, nice work👌
What has destroying vegetation got to with pitting up a new fence. Also why does the neighbour get the front of the fence why was a double fronted fence put in place
Why don't you just get an auger to make those post holes.
Where this fence was there are a large amount of rocks and pebbles in the ground as well as the concrete from the old posts etc. with a 250mm auger you end up with a 400mm hole if you are not careful.
@gorillagroundsandgardens bummer. Everything I watched those guys with the post hole diggers my shoulders hurt. Ouch that's rough.

How much did it cost?
This work was around £6,000
Düz ve güzel olan yüzey neden eve dönük olmadı ?
It was originally going to be on the customers side but part way through the project they requested it went on the neighbours side!
The neighbour obviously kicked off about it
They don’t look great from the back
Now it needs some new plantings to hide up the fence.
The client has planted along the fence to break it up which already looks great and will be even better in the spring.

@grumpyoldgit8254 I hear about it. So, how you explain the fence in this video?
In theory if the person that pays for the fence can put the good side wherever they like. The neighbour in this case asserted there was a legal requirement to put the nice side facing them.
To the best of my knowledge this requirement does not exist but the clients wanted to keep the neighbour happy.
Hmmm
Why do you place the best side of the fence towards the neighbors?
Some towns or city require that
The neighbour mentioned they should get the "nice" side of the fence and our clients want to keep their neighbours happy so told us on the day to change which way the fence was facing.
It created a bit of extra work for us and an additional cost for our clients but I think in the end our client got the best side anyway.
Why dont they use Concrete Posts as they do not rot.
Because somebody (in this case our client) has to look at them.
Well after a few years of high winds these fences will topple and when they come down its always in winter, very hard to replace and even harder to get someone to replace them, should maybe mention this to customer.
Amazing that it was done in 2 days
We have a great team that work very well together on projects like this just so we can minimise the time on site and disruption to the clients.
What I don't understand is why you put the ugliest side inside?
We were asked to by the client after we already had a couple of posts in. They wanted to keep their neighbour happy!
In my opinion, if there is no gap between the fence and there is a strong wind, there is a fear that it will fall
The only one that has gone wrong so far was caused by a massive flood that washed all the soil from around the posts. 000's of meters and many good storms without issue over the last 5 years.

We didn't find any nests in this hedge. Fortunately this work was in a woodland village so there are lots of better places for birds to nest close by.
Nonsense.
You actually fing very few nests in leylandii hedges. Might be worth asking the question before making a statement based on an assumption.
